Union County authorities investigate possible child enticement cases

News

June 5th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Another possible child enticement case is under investigation in southwest Iowa’s Union County. Sheriff Rick Piel says the latest incident occurred yesterday (Monday) in the town of Lorimor. “There were a couple of kids (who) reported a white van…and as they walked by, the person supposedly asked if they would like to buy a puppy or see a puppy,” Piel said. The children refused and reported the matter to their parents who called police. A similar incident was reported in the nearby town of Afton last week.

In that case, Piel said a 10-year-old boy reported a man in white van stopped and asked the child to get in and help him look for a puppy. Piel said no one has been charged in the case, but deputies have a potential suspect. “We’ve located the van and we’ve talked to the driver, but he denies everything,” Piel said. Both cases remain under investigation.

Neb. appeals court reinstates license revocation

News

June 5th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Court of Appeals has reinstated the revocation of a man’s driver’s license after a lower court found the state Department of Motor Vehicles had wrongly revoked it. Joshua Stone, now of Crescent, Iowa, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in February 2011 and his license revoked for one year. Stone appealed, and a Sarpy County judge reversed the revocation, based on a department hearing officer’s sworn report saying there was enough evidence to revoke Stone’s license. But the report had been signed a day before the hearing, leading the judge to believe that the officer had decided the matter before hearing evidence in the case. The department appealed, and the Nebraska Appeals Court found Tuesday that the lower court did not have jurisdiction in the case.

Voter turnout low in Iowa’s primary

News

June 5th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Turnout is low as Iowa voters head to the polls in a primary election that includes three competitive congressional races in two districts altered by redistricting. In Iowa City and Council Bluffs, just a handful of voters turned up after the polls opened at 7 a.m. on Tuesday. The lunch crowd wasn’t much better. Iowa lost one of its five congressional seats in the 2010 census. The races in the 1st and 2nd Districts in eastern Iowa will narrow the GOP field and determine whether Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack can seek a fourth term in office. Loebsack faces state Sen. Joe Seng, of Davenport, in the 2nd District race. In the 1st District, two Republicans are vying to face Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley in November. Polls close at 9 p.m.

June 5th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The City Council in Atlantic will hold the third and final readings of two ordinances during their meeting Wednesday evening. Omaha going on another search for superintendent

News

June 5th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – The Omaha school board has decided to conduct another national search for a superintendent.  The board voted Monday night for a new search and to begin the process for appointing an interim superintendent.  On Saturday the board accepted the resignation of former Des Moines Superintendent Nancy Sebring. A records search showed she’d exchanged sexually explicit emails with a lover using the Des Moines district’s computers.

Sebring had been scheduled to start in Omaha in July. But that plan unraveled after she resigned suddenly from her Des Moines job on May 10th.  The Omaha board had selected Sebring in April out of three finalists to replace John Mackiel, who plans to retire this summer.
Board President Freddie Gray said Monday that she hadn’t talked to Mackiel about staying longer.
