Another possible child enticement case is under investigation in southwest Iowa’s Union County. Sheriff Rick Piel says the latest incident occurred yesterday (Monday) in the town of Lorimor. “There were a couple of kids (who) reported a white van…and as they walked by, the person supposedly asked if they would like to buy a puppy or see a puppy,” Piel said. The children refused and reported the matter to their parents who called police. A similar incident was reported in the nearby town of Afton last week.

In that case, Piel said a 10-year-old boy reported a man in white van stopped and asked the child to get in and help him look for a puppy. Piel said no one has been charged in the case, but deputies have a potential suspect. “We’ve located the van and we’ve talked to the driver, but he denies everything,” Piel said. Both cases remain under investigation.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Court of Appeals has reinstated the revocation of a man’s driver’s license after a lower court found the state Department of Motor Vehicles had wrongly revoked it. Joshua Stone, now of Crescent, Iowa, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in February 2011 and his license revoked for one year. Stone appealed, and a Sarpy County judge reversed the revocation, based on a department hearing officer’s sworn report saying there was enough evidence to revoke Stone’s license. But the report had been signed a day before the hearing, leading the judge to believe that the officer had decided the matter before hearing evidence in the case. The department appealed, and the Nebraska Appeals Court found Tuesday that the lower court did not have jurisdiction in the case.

The City Council in Atlantic will hold the third and final readings of two ordinances during their meeting Wednesday evening. That includes an ordinance which would reduce the speed limit on East 22nd Street from Highway 71 to Olive Street, from 45- to 35-miles per hour, and, an ordinance amending the Code of Ordinances, by adding a chapter on Urban Deer Control.

The DNR and City officials have concluded there is currently an overpopulation of deer within the City limits of Atlantic which poses a threat to property and public safety. The ordinance would allow bow hunting of antlerless deer, with certain restrictions and conditions.

In other business, the Council will act on requests from: The Jaycees, to discharge fireworks on July 4th at the Atlantic Municipal Airport; The 1st United Methodist Church, to close Cedar Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets on August 16th from 5-7pm, for a community block party; and, from Dan March, on behalf of the Heritage House, to block the alley behind 811 Poplar Street from Noon until 8-pm Saturday, June 23rd, for the purpose of holding a fundraising dinner for its Good Samaritan Fund (to help residents who have outlived their financial resources).

The Council meeting begins at 5:30-p.m., in their Chambers at the Atlantic City Hall.

The Walnut City Council Wednesday will act on appointing a replacement City Council member, following the recent resignation in May, of Councilman Darren Tooley. They’ll also act on designating a Mayor Pro Tem, since Tooley served in that capacity, as well.

In other business, the Council will discuss: Capital Equipment Funding; A review of options for the Codification of the City’s Code of Ordinances; The AMVETS June Antique Show and Walk and possible action on the use of public streets and rights-of-way for the event; Camping Fees at the City Park; the Development of a Sand Volleyball Court and improvements to Fireman’s Park; The Law Enforcement Services contract with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Department, and, other matters.

The meeting begins at 5-p.m. Wednesday, in the Council’s Chambers at the Walnut City Hall.

The Cass and Adair County Boards of Supervisors will hold their regular, separate meetings Wednesday,beginning at 9-a.m.  In Greenfield, the Adair County Board will act on a 28-E sharing agreement with the Southern Iowa Trolley, and the dissolution of a 28-E agreement with SIRWA (The Southern Iowa Rural Water Association) . In other business, the Board will: Receive a Fiscal Year 2013 Case Management Project cost report from Home Care Coordinator Jane Ernst; Hear from County Engineer Nick Kauffman, with regard to approval of a new hire and the purchase of a brush cutter; and, they’ll hear from V-A Administrator Donna Bittmer, with regard to the perpetual care of Catholic cemeteries.

In Atlantic, the Cass County Board of Supervisors, Wednesday, are expected to take action on signing a letter of intent to join with other counties in a 28-E agreement for Mental Health services, as regionalization is required. Governor Terry Branstad signed legislation late last month that reform’s the state’s mental health system. It shakes up the current county-based format, in favor of one based on “regions.”

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – The Omaha school board has decided to conduct another national search for a superintendent.  The board voted Monday night for a new search and to begin the process for appointing an interim superintendent.  On Saturday the board accepted the resignation of former Des Moines Superintendent Nancy Sebring. A records search showed she’d exchanged sexually explicit emails with a lover using the Des Moines district’s computers.

Sebring had been scheduled to start in Omaha in July. But that plan unraveled after she resigned suddenly from her Des Moines job on May 10th.  The Omaha board had selected Sebring in April out of three finalists to replace John Mackiel, who plans to retire this summer.
Board President Freddie Gray said Monday that she hadn’t talked to Mackiel about staying longer.
