The Atlantic Police Department today (Wednesday) reports two Cass County men were arrested, Tuesday. 23-year old Joshua Dyer, of Atlantic, was arrested on a Sarpy County, NE. warrant for Criminal Mischief. Dyer was being held in the Cass County Jail. And, 21-year old Shane Suhr, of Anita, turned himself-in to authorities. Suhr was wanted on three Cass County warrants for Public Intoxication, Disorderly Conduct, and Assault with Injury. He was later released from custody, on bond.

The Guthrie County Extension council soon will begin the process to fill four seats on the council. The elected council, like the hundreds of others across the country, is the grass roots governing body for the Cooperative Extension System. As part of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the Guthrie County council works in partnership with local citizens, Iowa State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to carry the land-grant mission beyond the campus in Ames. Candidates for the council will appear on the general election ballot in November. The duties of a council member include hiring county staff, managing the county extension budget and helping select programming. One hundred ISU Extension and Outreach field offices provide local access to extension programs in all 99 counties.  

The nomination process begins with the appointment of a four-member nominating committee. By law, the current council appoints two men and two women to the committee and it cannot include any current members of the council. The committee must be appointed by Aug. 6t, 2012. The committee is charged with nominating candidates for the council, and geographic distribution of the nominees is one factor that they consider. After nominees have been selected, each nominee must turn in to the county elections commissioner a petition signed by at least 25 qualified voters by 5 p.m. on Aug. 29th, 2012.

Page County Sheriff Lyle Palmer said Tuesday, that no injuries were reported following two separate accidents Sunday evening. 21-year old Johnny Lee Blake, of New Market was cited for Failure to Maintain Control, after the 1998 Ford Mustang he was driving was traveling too fast and went out of control on Highway 2, on the outskirts of Shenandoah. The accident happened as Blake was trying to turn onto Annacrose Highway from westbound Highway 2, at around 5:20-p.m. Sheriff Palmer says the car hit some loose gravel and sand before going into a skid. Blake overcorrected twice, sending the car into the west ditch, where it hit a City of Shenandoah “Welcome” sign. Damage to the sign amounted to $4,000. The car sustained $2,500 damage.

The other accident happened at around 4:30-p.m. Sunday, on 270th Street, near the intersection with Q Avenue, or about two-miles west of Shambaugh. Palmer says Cody Alan Graham, of Coin, was traveling west on 270th when the 1996 Dodge Caravan he was driving went out of control, left the road to the right and rolled over into a ditch before coming to rest on its left side. The vehicle sustained $3,000 damage. No citations were issued.

Police in Council Bluffs are asking for your help in finding a teenaged female runaway and her infant, whom they believe may be in Villisca or St. Joseph, MO. Officials say 17-year old Jewelie Coburn, of Council Bluffs, and her 1-year old son Gaige left Children’s Square at around 6:45-p.m. Tuesday. Officers were notified at 7:25-p.m. and checked the area of North 16th Street in Council Bluffs, and Interstate 29, after receiving a report of a female carrying a baby, but no one was located.

A tip led authorities to believe the pair may have been enroute to Villisca, but after a check by a deputy of a residence, and following several follow-up phone calls with Coburn’s relatives in Delware and Villisca residents, they learned Jewelie and her baby may still be in Villisca, or, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Investigators remain in contact with Montgomery County authorities while the search is underway. Anyone with information about the teen and her son are asked to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office or Council Bluffs Police at 712-328-4715.

Iowa Democrat Senator Tom Harkin Tuesday, announced that the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Development Program has approved a 3.375-percent 40 year loan of $21-million to the Manning Regional Healthcare Center. The funds will be used to construct a replacement hospital of the current facility that was built in 1927.  The new, seventeen bed critical access facility will be approximately 61,900 square feet, and will include a physician clinic and a recovery center that will provide substance abuse treatment services for sixteen patients in a partial residential setting.  Senator Harkin is a senior member of the Appropriations subcommittee that funds the USDA and the Rural Development Program.

In the race for a seat on the Iowa Legislature here in western Iowa, there was at least one close contest. Republican candidate Mark Segebart, a farmer from Vail and member of the Crawford County Board of Supervisor, edged out his GOP challengers Matthew Biede and Carroll Mayor Adam Schweers, and moves on to face Democrat Mary C. Bruner, in November to determine the winner of the seat for the Senate, in District 6. Segebart garnered 1, 251 votes in the Primary election (46.665), while Schweers had 1,077 votes (40.17%), and Biede had only 350 votes.

In Senate District 10, Republican Jake Chapman beat challenger Matthew T. Mardesen by more than 850 votes. There is currently no Democrat slated to run against him in November.

And, in the race for State Representative in the newly formed 22nd District, Greg Forristall defeated his GOP challenger Clint Fichter, by more than 900 votes (2,526 to 1,611).

The unofficial results are in from Tuesday’s Primary Election. Here’s a look at some of the area Counties where there were locally contested races….

In Pottawattamie County: incumbent Republican Sheriff Jeff Danker easily won re-election to his job by obtaining 4,399 (nearly 63%) of the votes. His his GOP challenger John Hitchcock, received 2,609 votes (just over 37%). Incumbent auditor Marilyn Jo Drake easily beat her Republican opponent, Gary Herman, by garnering nearly 69% of the vote. In the race for State Representative, District 22, Greg Forristall was the winner, beating his GOP challenger Clint Fichter, by a little more than 900 votes.

In Audubon County: incumbent Board of Supervisor Todd Nelson and fellow Republican Duane Diest fended-off challenges by Monte Dreher and Roger Merk, to try and fill one of two seats on the board this Fall. Democrat Jerry Carter was unopposed in his bid for the nomination.

In Guthrie County: Jerome Caraher defeated his GOP challenger John Milhollin in the District 1 Supervisor’s race, by just 36 votes. Democrat James Carroll was unopposed in the election. In the District 5 Supervisor’s race, Republican Mike Dickson beat his challenger Robert Schemmel with his 71 votes to Schemmel’s 28. Dickson will face Democrat David Guisinger in November’s General Election.

In Montgomery County: incumbent Republican Sheriff Joe Sampson easily defeated his GOP challenger Chris Stephens for the job, by receiving 73%, or 920 more votes than Stephens.

In Shelby County: incumbent Republican Sheriff Mark Hervey easily won the nomination over his GOP challenger Nathan Christensen. Hervey picked up over 1,100 more votes than Christensen to keep his job secure. There are no democratic challengers for him to face this Fall. In the Supervisor’s race, Delbert Hull, who was seeking re-election to the Board, garnered just a little more than 9% of the vote. Of the six Republicans vying for the Board, Steve Kenkel had the most votes (33.57%), followed by Charles Parkhurst (18.93%), and Randy Nelson (17.86%).  Among the three democrats, Jerry Henscheid received 292 (or, 37.92%) votes, Lavon Christensen had 273 (or, 34.45%) votes, and Herb Christensen received 177 (or, 22.99%) votes.
