DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The hot and dry weather is taking a toll on Iowa crops, with the condition of corn and soybeans continuing to decline.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says in Monday’s weekly report that only 46 percent of the corn is in good to excellent shape. That’s the lowest level for the first week of July since 1993. A week ago, it was 62 percent.

Forty-eight percent of soybeans are in good to excellent condition, down from 59 percent last week.

The USDA says 88 percent of topsoil moisture and 82 percent of subsoil moisture are short or very short.

Iowa had 100-plus temperatures from Wednesday through Saturday. The highest temps so far this year were on Saturday with eight communities reaching 105 degrees. There was no widespread rain.

Power Outage Causes Wastewater Discharge in Crawford County

An electrical failure in the Crawford County city of Kiron Monday afternoon shut down a pumping station, releasing partially treated wastewater to East Otter Creek.

The city of Kiron expects power to be restored this morning allowing complete wastewater treatment to resume. City consultants are taking water samples to test for bacteria and other pollutants.

Residents should keep children and pets from playing in or around the creek until about 48 hours after treatment is restored.

The DNR will continue to monitor the situation.

2 Minor Accidents Reported in Atlantic Last Weekend

The Atlantic Police Department reports two minor accidents and an arrest occurred this past weekend.

On Friday, July 6, shortly after 3 PM, a vehicle driven by Lela Boos of Atlantic backed out of a parking space in a parking lot behind 11 W 5th Street.  As the vehicle started moving north in the alley it struck a legally parked vehicle owned by Chelsey Dolch of Atlantic.  Boos was cited for failure to maintain control.  Total damage from the incident was about $2,500.

On Saturday, July, 7th at about 9 PM, a vehicle driven by Lindsay Arndt of Logan was backing out of a driveway at 1307 Maple Street when it backed into a vehicle owned by John Kooistra of Ames.  Arndt was cited for striking an unattended vehicle.  Total damage from the accident was about $2,100.

Also on Saturday July 7th, Atlantic Police arrested 33-year-old Jose Perez of West Wendover, Nevada for public intoxication.  He was transported to the Cass County Jail where he was booked in and held.

CHICAGO (AP) – A regulatory group has ordered accounts frozen at Iowa-based brokerage Peregrine Financial Group and says it hasn’t been able to account for $220 million in customer funds. The National Futures Association says PFG couldn’t demonstrate it meets capital requirements and rules that require it to segregate customer funds.

 MANCHESTER, Iowa (AP) – Authorities have made another arrest in the killing of a Manchester couple. Manchester police arrested 21-year-old Brandon Ahlers yesterday on charges of aiding and abetting first-degree murder.  Richard and Janet Sweet were found fatally shot in their home. Their grandson, 17-year-old Isaiah Sweet, is charged as an adult with two counts of first-degree murder.
 
 ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – The Cass-Clay Creamery of Fargo, N.D., is voluntarily recalling some brands of peppermint bon bon-flavored ice cream because they may contain eggs that aren’t listed on the label. The products were distributed in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota and Wisconsin.

Cass County arrests

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports numerous individuals were arrested on a variety of charges over the past week.  On June 28th 35-year old Kevin Russell Ray Milliam, of Atlantic,  appeared at the Cass County Jail to be booked and released on District Court Charges of Theft 4th Degree.  On June 29th, 41-year old Stanley Oral Rossell, of Lewis, was arrested on a charge of Interference with Official Acts. Rossell was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $300 bond.

On June 29, 2012, Sheriff’s deputies arrested 30-year old Brian Harold Eilts, of Massena, on a charge of Disorderly Conduct. Eilts was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on $300 bond. On July 1st, 28-year old Cortney Anne Taylor, of Griswold, was arrested on a charge of Driving While Suspended. Taylor was taken to the Cass County Jail where she pled guilty and was released the following day. On July 3rd, 19-year old Mathew Robert Kern, of Atlantic, appeared at the Cass County Jail to be booked and released on a Sheriff’s Office charge of OWI 1st Offense.

On July 4th,  the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office arrested 28-year old Nichole Rey Renshaw, of Guthrie Center, on a Cass County District Court Warrant for Theft 2nd Degree. Renshaw was transported to the Cass County Jail where she was later released on $2000 bond. That same day, the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office arrested 28-year old Chad V. Renshaw, of Guthrie Center, on a Cass County Magistrate’s warrant for Theft 5th Degree. Renshaw was transported to the Cass County Jail where he pled guilty and was released the following day.

On July 7th, 2012, Cass County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 24-year old Kalynn Scott Namanny, of Machney Park, IL, on a charge of Public Intox. Namanny pled guilty before the Magistrate later that day and was released. And, on Sunday, July 8th, 27-year old Christopher Russell Marsh, of Macedonia, was arrested on a charge of OWI 1st Offense. Marsh was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance.

Drug Arrests in Cass County

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office report a Nebraska man was arrested Sunday on drug charges. 19-year old Bryan Adam Miedl,  of Bellevue, NE, was taken into custody on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Alcohol Underage, and Interference with Official Acts. Miedl was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was being held on $1600 bond.

Last Thursday (July 5th) 18-year old Caan Daniel Buchanan,  of Griswold, was arrested on a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance. Buchanan was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on his own recognizance.

On Independence Day, 23-year old Nicholas Keith Sheeley, of Maple Plain, MN, was arrested by Cass County Deputies, on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Sheeley was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was later released on $1000 bond.

Rollover Accident NW of Atlantic Monday Morning Injures Woman

A local woman was hurt in a rollover accident northwest of Atlantic this (Monday) morning, on Highway 83.

54 year old Jayne Marie Knight, of Atlantic, was taken to the Cass County Hospital by private vehicle for treatment.

The accident happened about eight-tenths of a mile north of the Atlantic City limits at around 6:15-a.m.  Knight was northbound and lost control of her 2005 Nissan Altima, which rolled into the north ditch near a tree line and corn field.

Cass County Sheriff’s officials estimate the damage to the car at 11-thousand dollars.

 


Villisca Man Arrested on Domestic Abuse Charge

A Villisca man was arrested Sunday night on a charge of aggravated domestic abuse assault while displaying a weapon.  Anthony Duane Pond was taken by Montgomery County deputies to the jail in Red Oak where he is held on two thousand dollars cash bond.  Law enforcement officials say the victim in the assault was not inured.
