The Cass and Adair County Board of Supervisors will both meet this morning.
In Atlantic, the Cass County Board of Supervisors will hear from county attorney Dan Feistner regarding an update of employee handbook and/or bargaining unit negotiation services. The supervisors will then hear a quarterly activity report regarding Cass County conservation. The board will also hear an update from county engineer Charles Marker. The meeting of the Cass County Board of Supervisors will be held this morning at 9:00 at the Cass County Courthouse.
In Greenfield, the Adair County Board of Supervisors will hear the final report regarding the SICOG Housing Trust Fund. The board will then hear from Lori Nosekable regarding the rationalization of mental health services. The supervisors will also hear a secondary roads update from county engineer Nick Kauffman regarding three new hires and bids for other projects taking place around Adair County. The meeting of the Adair County Board of Supervisors will be held this morning at 9:00 at the Adair County Courthouse in Greenfield.
The Atlantic City Council is scheduled to meet tonight.
On the agenda is the re-construction of the Sunnyside Tennis Court. The Council will review final plans and specifications and set dates for a public hearing for project bids.
The Atlantic Council will also authorize the Mayor to sign a cooperative agreement between the City of Atlantic and DNR for water recreation access at the highway 83 and Sunnyside Lane ramp that was lost during construction of the new waste water treatment plant. The DNR has agreed to reimburse the city for 63% of the costs of that project.
Other matters the Council will act on include the disposal of property located in the 300 block of Cedar Street and a public hearing regarding a proposed tax agreement between the City and United Steel Erectors.
The meeting of the Atlantic City Council will be tonight at 5:30 at Atlantic City Hall.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Missouri River Historical Development board, a nonprofit partner in the Sioux City riverboat casino, has voted to solicit proposals for a land-based casino. The Sioux City Journal says Penn National Gaming, the owner of the riverboat, will have to compete with other bidders if it wants to continue its partnership with the nonprofit group, which jointly holds the gambling license.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A state official says that up to 250 employees in northeastern Iowa lost their jobs following the collapse of a financial empire owned by a businessman arrested in connection with a $200 million fraud scheme. Iowa Workforce Development spokeswoman Kerry Koonce said the agency is piecing together the economic damage caused by the sudden downfall of Peregrine Financial Group CEO Russ Wasendorf Sr., who was arrested and charged last week.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) – Farmers have told Iowa Governor Terry Branstad they’re facing a possible financial disaster if the drought doesn’t break. Corn and pork producers met with the governor today at a forum in Mount Pleasant. One expert says this is the worst dry spell in Iowa in nearly 25 years.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The University of Iowa says testing of a white powdery substance in an envelope mailed to a residence hall shows no harmful substances. A student counselor reported feeling ill after opening the envelope at Stanley Hall yesterday. More tests are being run on the powder.
EVANSDALE, Iowa (AP) – The FBI says dogs aiding in the search for two missing girls have picked up their scent near Meyers Lake in northeast Iowa. But a spokeswoman says there are no witness reports to confirm Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook-Morrissey were at the lake. Family members say they believe the girls were abducted.

Montgomery County Emergency Management Coordinator Brian Hamman says a Burn Ban will be in effect for his County beginning at 8-a.m. Wed., July 18th, and until further notice. The ban was requested following a poll of fire department chiefs in the County, and approved by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. It means open burning is prohibited in Montgomery County. An application to your local fire chief can be obtained to allow a permit for an open burn if your local Fire Official believes it is safe to do so. After approval of the permit, several entities within Montgomery County are informed to lessen the danger of false alarms.
Hamman says “Due to excessive heat and little to no precipitation over the last few weeks, Montgomery County rural areas are extreme to critically dry. As a precaution to all residents in Montgomery County in this, “tinder box” condition, which is not only effecting Montgomery County but throughout the entire state.” Hamman says “This is a dangerous situation and we rely on the public to assist us in this ban. The conditions are extremely favorable for a fast moving wildland fire that can destroy property and be life threatening if uncontrolled. If adequate moisture is received, a revocation of the ban will be considered by all Montgomery County Fire Officials.” Hamman says also, that lit cigarettes should not be thrown from moving vehicles, residents should avoid using sky lanterns, and fireworks involving sparks or flames.
With the additional of Montgomery County, 31 counties in the State are currently prohibiting opening burning, due to the dry conditions, and extremely explosive fire danger possibility for grassland and crop acreages. Montgomery County is the only County in southwest Iowa to have instituted the ban, as of 5-p.m. Tuesday.
RED OAK, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa woman sent to prison for a deadly crash that killed two young brothers has been released from prison.
Twenty-year-old Karli Brown of Essex, pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide in the November 2010 head-on collision near Red Oak that killed 5-year-old Maliki Todd and 4-year-old Alex Todd, of Cumberland. The accident happened about on U.S. Highway 48 near Red Oak. The boys mother, Nina McNeese of Cumberland was injured in the crash.
Officials say Brown was speeding, texting and passing in a no-passing zone when the crash happened. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Montgomery County Attorney Bruce Swanson says a judge on Monday reconsidered Brown’s sentence. The judge suspended the sentence and placed her on five years of supervised probation.
Swanson says he was not surprised at the judge’s decision. Swanson says it was a case of “gross negligence” and the judge wanted her to see the inside of a prison.
On Monday, Atlantic Police arrested 23 year old Andrew Nickum of Lewis on charges of O-W-I, second offense and driving while suspended. He was booked at the Cass County Jail.
No one was hurt in a two car collision at the intersection of seventh and Linn streets Monday. Timothy Smith of Lincolnton, North Carolina was charged with failing to yield making a left turn and no proof of insurance. He hit a car driven by Brenda Bird of Atlantic while trying to make a left turn in the intersection. Total damage to the two cars was estimated at four thousand dollars.
The Atlantic All Class Reunion saw success last weekend with alumni from several states and classes represented within a 50-year span.
“We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful weekend to host the All Class Reunion,” Atlantic Area Chamber Director Megan Roberts said. “The heat gave way on Saturday evening and the street dance crowd was much appreciative.”
Overall, more than 500 alum were present at the different events throughout the weekend of July 13-14, Roberts said. Pleased with the progress from last year, Roberts said she hoped to see it grow even larger in 2013.
“We have every intention of continuing the alumni event because the Chamber business community sees great value in bringing those folks back to town,” Roberts said.
The Reunion weekend kicked off with a wine and appetizer reception Friday night and was followed by tours of the Atlantic High School and Washington Elementary on Saturday. The Atlantic Middle School and Schuler Elementary were closed for construction. The history of Atlantic video was also shown Saturday as well. The weekend activities concluded with a street dance at the Rock Island Depot.
“We heard many positive comments about our beautiful schools and many alum were appreciative of the organized events,” Roberts said. “As always, you never know what opportunities for our community may come out of reconnecting some of these alumni with their home of Atlantic, Iowa.”
