A Harlan man was charged with illegal hand fishing after showing his catch in the local newspaper. Radio Iowa’s Dar Danielson reports.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says 48-year-old Larry Finstad was charged with illegally catching a catfish using his hand in the technique that’s know as “noodling.” The D-N-R says someone called in to the poachers hotline after seeing an article in the Harlan Tribune featuring Finstad holding a 30-pound flathead catfish that he admitted he caught by hand in the Nishnabotna River. Finstad was charged at the Shelby County Jail where he was locked up after being arrested earlier for possession of burglary tools. It’s the second recent arrest here for the sport which is featured in some T-V shows, but is illegal in the state. D-N-R conservation officers charged four men with illegal hand fishing in June after watching them catch several catfish by hand in the Des Moines River near Selma. The D-N-R confiscated 174 pounds of catfish fillets at the home of one of the men.
The Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund Committee has announced plans for the 4th Annual T-Fred Memorial Golf Tournament to be held Saturday, August 11, at the Nishna Hills Golf Course. Frederickson, the son of Darrin and Melanie Petty of Atlantic and Gary and Kari Frederickson of Council Bluffs, was 21 years old when he lost his life in a 2009 home fire.
In his memory, a four person best ball tournament will begin at 9 a.m with prizes awarded in four flights and on every hole. A silent auction, t-shirt and bracelet sales, 50/50 raffle, and free will donation meal will be held all day in the club house. The meal will consist of a hot dog or hamburger, chips, and homemade cookie or bar. This year’s tournament will also feature Country Artist Randy Burk performing live on the back patio from 4-6p.m. Burk, an Atlantic native, has released two albums and toured the Midwest, West Coast, and Europe averaging 200 shows a year.
“When Randy said he wanted to do something to get behind us, I was taken aback,” said Melanie Petty. “He is an awesome talent and to be able to offer his level of entertainment to our visitors and golfers is something I never imagined we would be able to do. Ironically, Randy has even shared the stage with Jason Aldean, whose song ‘Tattoos On This Town’ is the tournament’s theme this year. We are so excited to have him!”
Proceeds from the event have funded three annual scholarships and donations to a wide variety of recipients including the Atlantic Food Pantry, AHS Athletics Department, school and public libraries, Friends of Lake Anita’s fishing clinic, Kiwanis Club’s bicycle helmet and bicycle safety reward programs, Cass County Fair, Atlantic Parks and Recreation, Nishna Valley Family YMCA’s Partnership With Youth program, Atlantic Little League’s Trevor Frederickson Baseball/Softball Clinics, and The Compassionate Friends. Photos recapping the over $35,000 in donations given to date will be on display in the club house.

A Corning man has been arrested on two separate charges.
On Wednesday shortly after 8 PM, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a call claiming 57-year-old Jeff Mendenhall of Corning was on 6th street harassing a person for which there is a no contact order involving Mendenhall. He was arrested for public intoxication 2nd offense and violation of a no contact order.
A diabetic reaction is being blamed for an injury accident Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday at about 11:30, 60-year-old Kevin Kling of Villisca was driving a 2000 Dodge Stratus south on O Avenue near 180th Street when he entered the ditch to his right, then drove back out and turned the Dodge around and headed north on O Avenue. His vehicle then hit a ditch hard enough to deploy airbags. The Page County Sheriff’s Office says he suffered from a diabetic reaction.
Kling was transported by Clarinda EMS to the Clarinda Regional Health Center for treatment of his injuries. No citations were issued. An update on Kling’s condition is unavailable.
The Atlantic City Council held their regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday night.
On the agenda was an update on the Sunnyside Tennis Court’s project. City Administrator Dough Harris says the project would include renovating and replacing the courts. The Council approved the resolution authorizing bids for the Sunnyside Tennis Court reconstruction unanimously.
The Council then heard a motion to authorize the Mayor the sign a cooperative agreement between the City of Atlantic and the DNR where the DNR would agree the share with the costs of replacing the boat ramp adjacent to the wastewater treatment plant. Councilman Steve Livengood says the old boat ramp was torn up when new wastewater treatment plant was built. The DNR will pay a little over $19,000 to replace the boat ramp. Overall, that means the DNR would be paying 63 percent of the total cost of the project. The new ramp will be a little closer to the road than the old one.
Next, the Council set a date for a public hearing on the disposal of property located at 302 and 302 ½ Cedar Street. Adjacent property owners next to those lots have expressed interest in purchasing the properties. This means the properties would not have to go to bid and would be sold for fair market value. The potential new property owners would use the lots for rehabilitation. The Council set August 1 as the date for the disposal of the properties.
In other business, Councilman Livengood says during his committee report that the emergency communications center has set a goal to move within the next two years since they have outgrown their current location. He says there was discussion with Iowa Highway Patrol about sharing a new location, but the highway patrol declined.
The Atlantic City Council meeting was held Wednesday evening at City Hall.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A spokeswoman for a company that collects trash in a northeast Iowa city where two young cousins disappeared says trash from the city is being separated for investigators. Debbie Acklin of Black Hawk County Waste Disposal says authorities asked the company on Monday to start dumping trash from Evansdale homes and businesses in a separate area of the county landfill. Eight-year-old Elizabeth Collins and 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey were last seen Friday at their grandmother’s house in Evansdale.
MANCHESTER, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa teenager suspected of killing his grandparents at their home in Manchester faces several new charges as an adult. The charges previously filed against 17-year-old Isaiah Sweet in juvenile court have been transferred to district court this week. Sweet is charged as an adult with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Richard of Janet Sweet in May.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A tree is getting the blame for a power outage in Iowa City. Officials say the tree fell across a street and hit a power line yesterday afternoon, knocking out power to about 2,000 homes and businesses.
GARNER, Iowa (AP) – A motorist who hit and killed a Minnesota man on a bicycle in northern Iowa has been sentenced to up to five years in prison. Forty-year-old Travis Thomas of Floyd pleaded guilty on May 8th to involuntary manslaughter and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was sentenced on Tuesday in Hancock County District Court.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Des Moines-area utilities have issued another peak water alert and are asking residents to conserve during the heat wave. The Des Moines Water Works and area utilities that receive water from the Des Moines utility issued the alert today.
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) – Workers at a bankrupt Iowa brokerage and other firms owned by a businessman implicated in a $200 million fraud scandal say they’re stunned by Peregrine Financial Group’s sudden collapse. About 75 workers of PFG and other companies controlled by Russ Wasendorf Senior attended a meeting today at a community college in Waterloo. They were given information about unemployment, job training and other benefits.
Officials with The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) say the DOT has been awarded two regional America’s Transportation Awards at a ceremony held at the Mid America Association of State Highway Transportation Officials’ annual meeting in Lexington, Ky.
I680 reconstruction
First, the Iowa DOT was recognized in the “Ahead of Schedule” category for the Interstate 680 reconstruction project in Council Bluffs. The section of highway was completely rebuilt in only 34 working days following the 2011 Missouri River flooding.
Second, the Iowa DOT received an award in the “Best Use of Innovation” category for the Keg Creek Bridge.

The bridge was completely prefabricated off-site and then assembled at the construction site using an accelerated bridge construction method. Utilizing this approach, the road was closed for only two weeks.

The U-S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa said Wednesday, that 48-year old Jaime Richard Schieffer, of Council Bluffs, was sentenced Tuesday in United States District Court in Council Bluffs, upon his conviction for possession of a sawed-off shotgun. United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt said Judge John A. Jarvey sentenced Schieffer to twenty four
months imprisonment, plus twenty four months of supervised release following his imprisonment, and imposed a $100.00 special assessment for the Crime Victim Fund. The Judge also ordered forfeiture of the shotgun and accompanying ammunition.Schieffer remains in the custody of the United States Marshal pending designation of the Federal Bureau of Prison facility at which he will serve his sentence.
Klinefeldt said on November 29th, 2011, an indictment was returned by the Federal Grand Jury for the Southern District of Iowa, charging Jaime Richard Schieffer with possession of a sawed-off shotgun. Schieffer appeared in Federal Court in Council Bluffs on April 5th, 2012, and pled guilty to the firearms charge.
The case against him was the result of an encounter on August 31st, 2011, in Council Bluffs, between Jaime Schieffer and an Iowa Highway Patrolman. The encounter ultimately led to the Trooper finding a sawed-off shotgun and shells at Schieffer’s residence. Both the stock and the barrel of the shotgun had been shortened.
The case was investigated by the Iowa State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was prosecuted by the United States Attorneys Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
