ONAWA, Iowa (AP) – Court documents say a 33-year-old western Iowa man accused of twice arranging to have someone shoot him has made a deal with prosecutors. Darren Hieber, of Mapleton, will plead guilty to one charge of conspiracy and two counts of solicitation for the shootings. The other charges will be dropped. He is scheduled to plead guilty on Aug. 20th.  Hieber is accused of persuading Brady Chapman to shoot him in a leg on Feb. 5. Hieber also is accused of hiring Joseph Roberts and Timothy Culley, both of Omaha, to shoot at him on March 8 in Mapleton. Authorities say Hieber was trying to gain sympathy from his ex-wife.  Roberts, Culley and Chapman have been given probation.

A woman being held in the Montgomery County Jail faces additional charges after a corrections officer discovered the inmate was allegedly in possession of marijuana. According to Red Oak Police, 45-year-old Tammy Raye Thallus was arrested Thursday on a Possession of Contraband charge, which is a felony offense. Thallus is being held in the county jail on $5,000 bond. Court records did not indicate what the original charges against her were.

A Red Oak man arrested earlier this week on forgery and burglary charges has also been charged with felony theft. 27-year-old Kenton Jarvis Schooling was charged Thursday with possession of a stolen motorcycle, a Class D felony, and 3rd degree criminal mischief, an aggravated misdemeanor. Schooling remains in the Montgomery County Jail on a total of $10,000 bond.

As the Summer winds down, the hustle and bustle of families falling back into school work and routines will begin. The American Red Cross is taking this time to remind eligible donors to add “Help Save Lives” to their list of activities. Officials say at least three extra donors are needed at all August blood drives, above what’s currently expected. The donors are critically needed in order for the Red Cross to readily meet hospital and patient needs this month, and into the coming Fall.

While eligible donors can give blood every 56 days, the average donor gives blood less than two-times per year. Call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org, to make an appointment, or for more information. All blood types are needed. A blood donor card or two other forms of identification are needed at check-in. Donors must be 17-years of age or older (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110-pounds, and be in generally good health.

A fight last weekend led to the arrest of an Avoca man, and complaints filed against two other people. Police in Harlan reported Thursday, that 18-year old Terry Ward, of Avoca, was arrested last Saturday for Disorderly Conduct, Public Intoxication and Assault, for allegedly striking 43-year old Shannon Graves, of Des Moines. The incident occurred in the pit area of the Shelby County Speedway. Graves was transported to Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, where she was treated for minor injuries. Officials say complaints were filed against Graves, and 24-year old Andrew Coffman, of Des Moines, for Disorderly Conduct.

The H-PD also reports 56-year old Ricky Lee Hansen, of Harlan, was arrested July 27th, on Driving While Intoxicated/2nd offense, and careless driving, charges. The arrest took place following a traffic stop in Harlan.

And, last Sunday, officers in Harlan investigated the theft of a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix from the Jerry Davis residence. The vehicle was later recovered at the J.J. Jensen sports complex. An investigation into the theft continues.

Authorities in Montgomery County are investigating an incident of vandalism in Villisca. Officials said Thursday a resident in the 100 block of East 2nd Street in Villisca reported someone scratched words into the driver’s side door of her 2002 Ford Windstar van, while it was parked in her driveway. The incident, which occurred sometime during the nighttime hours of August 1st and August 2nd, caused $700 damage. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department at 712-623-5107, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-432-1001.

Members of the Atlantic Ambassadors and Cass County Health System staff were on hand this (Thursday) morning, during a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Cass County Memorial Hospital’s new “Healing Garden.”

Dawn Marnin, Cass County Hospital Memorial Foundation Director, said the project was made possible at the start, by a gift from the Al and Chris Wernimont family. Al and his family wanted to help provide the healing feature at CCMH after they experienced the benefits of a natural setting during his cancer treatments.  It’s designed as a quiet space, where family members can go while their loved ones are in the hospital.  Marnin says there are measurable benefits to a Healing Garden, such as improving mood, reducing blood pressure, slowing the heart rate, relaxation of muscles, and the perception pain is lessened.

Dawn says there have been a number of donations in support of the project, including nearly all of the Cass County Health System employees.  She says she asked for 100-percent participation from their employees, and received 90-percent, which Marnin says is “absolutely huge.” She says the Atlantic and the residents of Cass County have been extremely supportive as well. The goal was to raise $300,000. At last report, Marnin says they had raised nearly $250,000. She thanked everyone who contributed any amount they could for the project.

Dawn says people are often surprised by the garden and the effect it has.  It’s equipped with trickling water fountains, colorful flowers, trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses and a pergola for shade. There’s also an outdoor barbeque, which is designed for families who have to make an extended stay while their loved one is receiving treatment, but for hospital employee recognition events.  Donations are still being accepted to help pay for the Healing Garden, which Marnin says will eventually be open 24-hours per day.

Officials with Southwest 8 Senior Services, a member of the Iowa Association of Area Agencies on Aging, say they are seeking passionate, engaged citizens who care about the needs of older Iowans to join their Advocacy Team. The organization is in need of volunteer advocates in southwest Iowa who live in or near the newly designated Iowa House Districts 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23, and 24 and Iowa Senate Districts 8, 9, 11, and 12 to help Southwest 8 communicate with  candidates and elected officials about issues that affect Iowa’s seniors.

Atlantic Police Chief Steve Green says anyone interested in bow hunting within the City limits of Atlantic, for the hunting year 2012-2013, can receive the necessary permit applications at the Police Department during normal business hours (8-a.m. to 4-p.m.). The permit will allow you to harvest antlerless deer only.

Green says permit applications need to be picked up and filled out prior to qualification try outs on August 18th at 10-a.m., or on August 22nd, at 6-p.m., at the Sunnyside Park, by the old school house.

Land owners who would like to allow a bow hunter to hunt on their land should call the Police Department at 712-243-3512 during normal business hours, and sign-up. The hunt is allowed under the City’s Urban Deer Control Ordinance.
