IOWA CITY, Iowa – 14 players — nine from the Hawkeye State — have signed National Letters of Intent to join the University of Iowa baseball program in the fall of 2023, it was announced Wednesday by head coach Rick Heller. The class is ranked as the 15th-best nationally by Baseball America, the highest ranking in program history.

“This is an outstanding recruiting class and a fantastic group of young men,” said Heller. “The balance between pitching and hitting is excellent. Associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Marty Sutherland continues to do a fantastic job year after year. Pitching coach Sean McGrath hit the ground running and has done a super job helping our recruiting efforts. This new group of Hawkeyes is talented and has a chance to be special. Our current roster has several potential MLB draft picks and the same can be said about this recruiting class. We feel that we are in a great place with our roster heading into the 2024 season, but we will likely need to sign a few more players this spring and summer.”

The class consists of ten position players: Kyle Alivo (UT, Milwaukee, Wis.), Cash Campbell (3B, Lombard, Ill.), Colin Coonradt (SS, Cedar Falls, Iowa), Myles Davis (SS, Marion, Iowa), Karson Grout (UT, Wellman, Iowa), Carter Geffre (C, Ames, Iowa), Tyler Guerin (1B, Shoreview, Minn.), Miles Risley (OF, Johnston, Iowa), Kooper Schulte (SS, New London, Iowa) and Caleb Wulf (C/UT, West Liberty, Iowa).

Iowa also signed four pitchers: Joey Oakie (RHP, Ankeny, Iowa), Nick Heitman (RHP, Mt. Vernon, Iowa), Liam Roche (LHP, Overland Park, Kansas) and Jaron Bleeker (RHP, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa). Newcomers Alivo, Guerin and Geffre will also pitch for the Hawkeyes.

11 recruits are top 500 rated players nationally by Perfect Game and five are inside the top 500 by Prep Baseball Report.

The Hawkeyes bring in the top-rated recruit in the state of Iowa (Oakie) and Minnesota (Guerin), according to Perfect Game. Alivo, Davis, Geffre and Grout are also ranked in the top-10 of their respective states by Perfect Game and Prep Baseball Report.

Atlantic Basketball is Guaranteed to Play Hard

Sports

November 15th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Trojan Basketball is a few weeks away from starting and former Trojan player, now Head Coach Dalton Franken is excited for his inaugural season. He is inheriting a Trojan squad that went 7-15 last year and 3-10 in conference action. This offseason the team has stayed focused in the present forgetting about last year’s struggles.

One of the main keys that Coach Franken has been helping his team improve on this offseason is defense. The Trojans last year had 686 rebounds, 103 steals, and 54 blocks. While these defensive numbers are good, Coach Franken wants to see them become higher.

A key part of helping the Trojan defense is senior Colton Rasmussen. He accounted for 93 rebounds, 26 steals, and 17 blocks last season. Yet, Rassmussen is also talented on the offensive end coming into this year with a 40% field goal percentage and scoring 400 points in the 2022-23 campaign. Coach Franken knows how big of a role Rassmussen plays in this year’s squad.

Coach Franken also mentioned that Rassmussen isn’t the only player that has stuck out during the offseason. Senior Nolan Waters who last year had the highest three-point percentage on Atlantic last year with 49% has been competing well. Brock Henderson was another name thrown out who showed a lot of potential from his time with the junior varsity team.

It’s hard to have a lot of certainties and guarantees with high school athletics. Each night normally brings something or someone different. Still Coach Franken wants Trojan fans to know that this year’s team will compete hard and be a tight knit unit that supports one another.

The Trojans have their first scrimmage of the year versus West Central Valley on Friday November 17th at 6pm in the Atlantic High School Gym.

The season opener for Atlantic is at home against ACGC on Tuesday November 28th at 7:30pm.

DAVENPORT, Iowa – A Davenport man was sentenced on November 9, 2023, to 27 years in federal prison for Conspiracy to Distribute 50 Grams or More of Methamphetamine, and Distribution of a Mixture and Substance Containing Methamphetamine and Cocaine.

According to court documents and evidence presented at sentencing, law enforcement began an extensive investigation which revealed that Art Eugene Thomas, 35, sold methamphetamine and cocaine. The investigation began in November 2020 when a concerned citizen reported that many individuals came and went from Thomas’s residence and provided law enforcement with security footage. Several witnesses interviewed said that Thomas carried a firearm. At sentencing, the Court found Thomas was a manager or supervisor within the drug trafficking organization based in part on Thomas’s direct connection to an Arizona drug source of supply. In total, Thomas was found to be responsible for approximately 37 pounds of ice methamphetamine.

After completing his term of imprisonment, Thomas will be required to serve five years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the announcement. This case was investigated by the Davenport Police Department, with assistance from the United States Postal Inspection Service.

This effort is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation. OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level criminal organizations that threaten the United States using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach. News

November 15th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Red Oak, Iowa) – Montgomery County Auditor Jill Ozuna says a successful post-election audit was conducted of the November City-School election on November 15, 2023. Ballots in Precinct 5 were hand- counted by election officials to ensure they matched the totals reported by the ballot tabulator. The precinct was randomly selected by the Secretary of State following Election Day. The City of Grant Mayor Race was audited. The results matched 100%.

County Auditor Jill Ozuna stated: “The hand count audit shows that our machines tabulate accurately and further restores integrity of our election process. I’d like to thank the county auditors and the election officials and poll workers across the state for their hard work this year,” Secretary Pate said. “We conducted another fair, secure election in Iowa, and these hand-count audits are one more way we ensure the integrity of the vote.”

Every ballot tabulator in Iowa undergoes a public pre-election test to ensure it will count votes accurately on Election Day. Post-election audits are mandatory in all 99 counties following each election.  For the City-School Election, one randomly chosen precinct in each county is required to conduct a post-election audit to verify the machine count.

For more information about election security in Iowa, visit the Secretary of State’s website at sos.iowa.gov. Information about the voting process is available at VoterReady.Iowa.gov.
