DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A vigil “against hate” has been scheduled in Des Moines in response to a white supremacist rally in Virginia last weekend that resulted in deadly violence. The “Shine the Light Against Hate” vigil will be held Monday night at Cowles Commons in downtown Des Moines. At least 100 people plan to attend. Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, a self-described progressive group, is promoting the vigil, which will include speakers and music.

Similar events have been held around the country since Saturday, after a group of white nationalists protested in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the city’s decision to remove a Confederate monument. A man is suspected of ramming a car into a crowd of peaceful counter-protesters, killing a 32-year-old woman. A state police helicopter crashed into the woods, killing two troopers onboard.

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports six people were arrested on separate charges from Aug. 10th through the 13th. At around 4-a.m. Sunday (Aug. 13th), 28-year old Jared Greg Mullennax, of Glenwood, was arrested for OWI/1st offense, Failure to Provide Proof of Insurance and Improper Use of Lanes. He was taken into custody following a traffic stop on Interstate 29, and held on a $1,000 bond.

At around 6:30-p.m. Sunday, 41-year old Jessica Brooks, of Logan, was arrested at the Mills County Sheriff’s Office, for Violation of Probation. Her bond was set at $6,000.

Sheriff’s Deputies in Mills County arrested 38-year old Gina Marie Henopp, of Omaha, at around 1:15-a.m. Saturday, following a traffic stop on I-29, for Interference with Official Acts. Bond was set at $300. A few minutes earlier, 39-year old Tyrice Marcell Baldwin, of Omaha, was arrested at the same location, for Possession of a Controlled Substance. His bond was set at $1,000.

Early Friday morning, 36-year old Bradley Jabe Ferris, of Logan, was arrested on I-29 for Driving While Barred and No SR-22 insurance. His bond was set at $2,000. And, last Thursday, 62-year old Craig Lee Hancock, of Council Bluffs, was arrested at Country Estates, on a warrant for Probation Violation. His bond was set at $21,000.

A Shelby County man was sentenced last Friday to 10-years in prison for receipt of child pornography. The U-S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa says 22-year old Colton James Klein, of Harlan, must also serve ten years of supervised release following his incarceration.

Klein pleaded guilty to receipt of child pornography on March 16, 2017, based on information developed by a multi-jurisdiction law enforcement investigation beginning in August of 2015. The investigation showed that Klein was using several Facebook accounts, along with other social media sites, to obtain sexually explicit images of minor females. After obtaining the images, Klein distributed some of the images to others linked to his social media networks.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Red Oak Iowa Police Department, La Vista Nebraska Police Department, Olathe Kansas Police Department, Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

The U-S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa reports 38-year old Shawn Sidney Beu, of Council Bluffs, was sentenced Friday to 20-years in prison followed by ten years of supervised release, for possession of child pornography.

Beu pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography on April 4, 2017. The guilty plea resulted from an investigation that began with a tip received by the Department of Homeland Security from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that a cloud storage facility used by Beu contained child pornography. A search warrant served on Beu’s residence located numerous computer devices that contained images of child pornography; some of these images were determined to have been created by Beu in his residence.

In addition to federal charges, Beu was convicted in Pottawattamie County District Court of several counts of sexual exploitation of a minor as a result of the investigation. The Council Bluffs Police Department and Department of Homeland Security conducted the investigation. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

A collision between an SUV and a semi early this (Monday) morning, in Mills County, resulted in the death of a Nebraska resident. The Iowa State Patrol reports 30-year old Nayeli Molgado, of Omaha, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene of the crash on Interstate 29, near mile marker 36.

Officials say Molgado was driving a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer north on I-29 in the left lane at around 3:25-a.m., when for reasons unknown, the SUV entered the right lane and struck the trailer of a 2012 Kenworth semi that was also headed northbound.

After the collision, the SUV rolled over and came to rest in the median. The driver of the semi, 57-year old Tommy Wilson, of Mulberry, Arkansas, was not injured.

The driver of a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix escaped injury early Saturday morning, after his car struck a cow on the road in Cass County. The accident happened near Dallas Road and 590th Street, at around 12:47-a.m.  Officials say 24-year old Dillion Ray Sharp, of Atlantic, was southbound on Dallas Road when a cow entered the traveled portion of the roadway and was struck by the passenger’s side of the vehicle. The cow walked away from the scene. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $3,500.

A traffic stop last Wednesday (Aug. 9th) in Cass County, resulted in the arrest of two people on drug charges. The Sheriff’s Office reports 18-year old Kane Melvin Cooley, and 34-year old Stephanie Marie Cooley, both of Anita, were arrested on a felony charge of Failure to Affix Drug Tax Stamp (a Class D Felony). Both were also charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver Alprazolam (an aggravated misdemeanor).

In addition, Kane Cooley was charge with OWI 1st Offense, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Stephanie Cooley was additionally charged with Possession of Marijuana 1st Offense, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The pair were taken to the Cass County Jail where they were being held on $8,000 bond each.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports also, deputies arrested 21-year old Jordan Thomas McElroy, of Creston, last Friday. McElroy was taken into custody on a District Court warrant for Probation Violation. He was released Saturday on $2,000 bond.

A vehicle pulled over for excessive speed Sunday morning on Interstate 80 near Council Bluffs, resulted in the arrest on drug charges, of a South Carolina man. The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office says while the deputy was speaking with 57-year old Kevin Clarence Miller, of Campobello, SC., he suspected the man was involved in some type of criminal activity.

After Miller was cited for excessive speed, he denied the Deputy consent to search Miller’s 2017 Kia Forte. He did consent to a K9 “free air sniff” around the vehicle’s exterior. A Police Service Dog was deployed and alerted to the odor of narcotics coming from the car. When a a “probable cause” search was conducted, authorities located a garbage bag in the trunk containing several vacuum sealed bags of marijuana. On the passenger side floorboard, was a vacuum sealed bag containing several containers of marijuana wax.

The total amount of marijuana located during the search amounted to 19.5-pounds. Miller was booked into the Pott. County Jail for Possession of a Controlled Substance/Marijuana, with the Intent to Deliver.

Two men were arrested recently on separate assault charges, in Pottawattamie County. The Sheriff’s Office reports 29-year old Sean Michael Bailey, of Oakland, was arrested Saturday evening for Domestic Assault (a Simple Misdemeanor) and Child Endangerment without Injury. Authorities say the incident involving his wife happened at their home in Oakland, and resulted in minor injuries to Sean Bailey.

And, 40-year old John James Ring, of Underwood, was arrested Sunday night for Domestic Assault with Injury (Aggravated Misdemeanor), following a physical disturbance involving his father, at a residence in Underwood. The report said Marvin Ring was assaulted by his son, who was upset and punched him in the head, causing apparent, minor injury.

Sheriff’s officials in Pottawattamie County say a Cass County woman was arrested Friday night on Pott. and Cass County warrants. The Probation Violation warrant from Pott. County is related to the failure of 44-year old Kimberly Denise Zeibig, of Griswold, to appear in court on an OWI charge. She was taken into custody following a records check, after the car she was a passenger in, was pulled over for a having a missing front license plate, and a rear plate that did not match the vehicle it was assigned to.

Zeibig was booked into the Pottawattamie County Jail and held for Cass County.
