.A clear sky, moist low level air and a light wind are all coming together to produce areas of dense fog…especially in lower lying areas. The fog is expected to dissipate fairly rapidly after sunrise.

…DENSE FOG ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM CDT THIS MORNING…

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Dense Fog Advisory, which is in effect until 10 AM CDT this morning.

* VISIBILITY…one quarter mile or less.

* IMPACTS…Rapid reduction in visibility especially in lower lying areas will cause driving difficulties.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Dense Fog Advisory means visibilities will frequently be reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.

Chiefs put Hali on PUP list, send Spiller packing to make 53

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have placed linebackers Tamba Hali and Dadi Nicolas on the physically unable to perform list and released veteran running back C.J. Spiller.

Kansas City also traded offensive lineman Isaiah Battle to Seattle on Saturday for a conditional 2018 draft pick and placed running back Spencer Ware and cornerback Ashton Lampkin on injured reserve.

Hali, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, is dealing with balky knees. Nicolas is coming off a knee injury last season. Spiller was the biggest surprise among 30 players who were cut. Not only did he appear rejuvenated after a long history of injuries, his release left the Chiefs with rookie Kareem Hunt and Charcandrick West as the only running backs on their roster.

DARLENE GRACE [Hockett] KINMAN, 96, of Guthrie Center, died Friday, Sept. 1st, at the Fleur Heights Care Center, in Des Moines. Funeral services for DARLENE KINMAN will be held 11-a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7th, at the Guthrie Center United Methodist Church. Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart has the arrangements.

Visitation at the Guthrie Center United Methodist Church will be held one-hour prior to the service, on Thursday.; Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com

Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Guthrie Center.

1 dead, 2 injured in eastern IA crash Sat. morning

A man died and two women were injured, during a collision Saturday morning in eastern Iowa’s Jackson County. The Iowa State Patrol reports the accident happened north of Andrew on Highway 62 at around 7:40-a.m., when a van crossed the center line of the road and struck an SUV head-on.

Officials say the driver of the van, 60-year old Marjorie Louise Hendrickson, and the driver of the SUV, 40-year old Tina Marie Kelchen, were injured. A passenger in Kelchen’s SUV, 40-year old Mitchell Roy Kelchen, died from his injuries. All of the victims are from Bellevue, Iowa.

The women were flown by helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The accident, which occurred on Highway 62, remains under investigation.

Man who fired at deputies during standoff sentenced

AURORA, Iowa (AP) — A 55-year-old Aurora man has been sentenced to prison for shooting at Buchanan County sheriff’s deputies while holding his wife hostage in their mobile home in October.

The Courier reports that Dennis Edgar Chamberlain was sentenced earlier this week to up to 25 years in prison after being convicted by a jury in July of attempted murder, second-degree kidnapping and weapons counts.

Buchanan County sheriff’s deputies were called to Chamberlain’s house on Oct. 8. Officials say Chamberlain fired a handgun next to his then-wife following an argument and then fired into a door when deputies and state troopers tried to contact him. An Iowa State Patrol negotiator eventually talked Chamberlain into releasing his wife and surrendering.

Chamberlain’s defense attorney argued at trial that Chamberlain was only trying to harm himself.

Officials: Fish kill near Le Mars traced to ice cream plant

LE MARS, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says a fish kill in a northwestern Iowa stream has been traced to a Le Mars ice cream making plant. The department says ammonia from the Wells Enterprises plant, which makes Blue Bunny ice cream, found its way into the Plymouth County stream, killing a large number of minnow and chubs.

Officials say the ammonia was in cooling water discharge from the plant. The department said Friday it will continue to look for and verify the spill source and send water samples for laboratory analysis. DNR fisheries staff also planned to do a fish kill count Friday.

Iowa roughs up Allen, Wyoming 24-3

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nate Stanley threw three touchdown passes in his first career start and Iowa beat Wyoming 24-3 on Saturday, its 16th win in its last 17 openers. Noah Fant caught two of those TD tosses for the Hawkeyes (1-0), who held the Cowboys (0-1) to just 59 yards rushing on 30 tries.

Stanley’s first career touchdown throw, which went to Fant on fourth-and-2, put Iowa ahead 7-3. Stanley connected with Fant for a 27-yard score following a bizarre muffed punt by Wyoming, and he hit Nick Easley from 45 yards out to give the Hawkeyes a 21-3 edge midway through the third quarter.

Josh Allen was 23 of 40 passing for 174 yards and two picks for the Cowboys, whose inability to run the ball left Allen without much space to work with. Allen threw an interception deep in Iowa territory with 11:32 left, and he threw another one right to lineman Brady Reiff after being blitzed with 4:36 left.

Akrum Wadley rushed for 116 yards for Iowa.

Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey tapped for USDA spot

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey has been nominated for an administrative role in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The White House announced President Donald Trump’s nomination of Northey on Friday. The 57-year-old Northey has been picked to serve as the Undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation. A news release says the position was created in May as part of a re-organization at USDA.

Northey, a Republican, is in the midst of his third term as Iowa’s ag secretary. Northey graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Agricultural Business and received his master’s in business from Southwest Minnesota State University.

He must first be confirmed by the U.S. Senate before he can take over the USDA post.

Iowa officials: Survey numbers skewed for pheasants, quail

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — This year’s annual Iowa pheasant and quail population survey looks bad — a 30 percent drop in the average statewide pheasant population and a 23 percent decline for quail. But state officials say they believe the numbers are misleading.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials believe that unusually dry weather during the survey taken in August is to blame for the skewed numbers.

Upland wildlife biologist Todd Bogenschutz says surveyors need heavy dew the mornings of the survey to get accurate numbers. That’s because it’s the dew that causes hens to move their broods from cover to gravel roads to dry off. If there’s no dew, the brood stays hidden from surveyors.

Bogenschutz says he expects similar numbers this year to 2016’s pheasant season, when hunters harvested about 250,000 roosters.
