Brian Ferentz won’t return as Iowa OC

Brian Ferentz will not be the offensive coordinator for the Hawkeye football team next year. Ferentz, son of head football coach Kirk Ferentz, is in his seventh season as offensive coordinator. Beth Goetz became Iowa’s interim athletics director in August. Goetz said in a written statement that she had conversions with both men as well as the university’s president and has informed Brian Ferentz this is his last season with the program.

The statement from Goetz made a passing reference to the team’s offensive struggles. Iowa has a six-and-two record, but the Hawkeyes’ offense ranks last nationally.

“Anyone who loves Iowa football recognizes both the success and challenges that have brought attention to our program this season. Our struggles on offense coupled with the offensive coordinator’s contract make this a unique situation.

After conversations with head coach Kirk Ferentz, coach Brian Ferentz and President Wilson, I informed Brian that our intention is for him to be with us through the bowl game, but this is his last season with the program. Making this known today is in the best interest of the program and its loyal fans; it provides clarity during this pivotal time in the schedule.

It is not my practice to be involved in assistant coaching decisions and certainly not to make public such a change during a season. Our priority is to put all our student-athletes in the best position to have both short-term and long-term success, on and off the field. Our football team has a group of outstanding young men and talented athletes, who at 6-2, have a lot to play for. As a former athlete, I know every opportunity to put on the jersey is a cherished one.

As Hawkeyes, let’s continue to support all our coaches, staff and student-athletes in their pursuit of a Big Ten Championship and bowl game victory.”

Northern Iowa’s Mark Farley previews Western Illinois

The Northern Iowa football team has climbed to 18th in the latest STATS FCS top 25. The Panthers are 5-3 after a 24-21 win at Illinois State and at 4-1 are tied for second in the Missouri Valley race.

That’s UNI coach Mark Farley. The Panthers host Western Illinois on Saturday and Farley says the Leathernecks are better than their 0-8 record.

Farley says the approach can’t change based on an opponents record.

This will be UNI’s 52 second meeting with Western Illinois in a series that dates back to 1967 and their final game as conference rivals. The Leathernecks are moving to the Ohio Valley Conference.

Farley says because the campuses are so close in proximity he hopes the series can continue.

Distracted walking could put trick-or-treaters at risk

News

October 30th, 2023 by admin

Most of us have heard how dangerous distracted driving can be, and how the number-one distraction is our phones, but distracted -walking- can be equally as deadly, especially with Halloween tomorrow (Tuesday). Elizabeth O’Neal, a professor in the University of Iowa’s Department of Community and Behavioral Health, says parents should tell their kids to leave their phones alone while they’re trick-or-treating, or else they may get so distracted, they endanger themselves in traffic.

Most parents have drilled into their kids’ heads to look both ways before crossing a street, but O’Neal says that’s only two-thirds of a vital lesson.

When trick-or-treating — and every day — O’Neal says we need to cross roads at a place where drivers are expecting pedestrians to be.

It’s said there’s safety in numbers, and there’s more visibility in numbers, but O’Neal says if your costumed kids are trick-or-treating in a group, they may be more prone to tricks, and trouble.

If the kids protest and don’t want adult chaperones, parents can keep tabs on the location of their little goblins by using G-P-S phone trackers or Apple Air Tags.

Some traffic tickets could be dismissed in southwest Iowa county

News

October 30th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A new pilot program in a southwest Iowa county will let drivers get some traffic tickets dismissed if they complete a defensive driving course. Fremont County Attorney Peter Johnson says the program is being done in collaboration with the National Safety Council’s Nebraska Chapter. “Most drivers aren’t getting tickets all the time. Sometimes it’s just a temporary lapse in judgement and it’s a minor traffic violation, but we know the effect that can have on people’s licenses and insurance rates,” he says, “so we want to give people an opportunity who through taking a class, through getting educated, would qualify to (have their tickets) be dismissed.”

An individual with a traffic ticket in Fremont County would be eligible to take the course once every three years. “We think just a refresher course on the rules of the road and safe driving techniques will be beneficial to the community at large,” Johnson says.

People who get tickets in Fremont County for minor moving violations, like running a stop sign or driving no more than 20 miles over the speed limit are eligible to apply to take a four hour course and get the ticket waived. There’s an eight hour course for more serious violations, but Johnson says county officials will review ALL applications – and some will not be approved. “There are other factors that we consider — whether the citation was issued in relation to an accident, whether there are other factual circumstances,” Johnson says. “…We kind of give it a once over to make sure that you are eligible and then if you are eligible we’ll let you know you are free to sign up for a class They do a quick screening as well to make sure you qualify with our standards.”

People who have a commercial driver’s license — even if the violation happened in a personal or private vehicle — are NOT eligible for the Fremont County program.

Cedar Rapids company is fined by the EPA for hazardous waste violations

News

October 30th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The U-S Environmental Protection Agency is fining an eastern Iowa company over alleged hazardous waste violations. The E-P-A says Red Star Yeast Company of Cedar Rapids will pay nearly 38-thousand dollars in civil penalties to resolve the case. The agency says Red Star didn’t follow federal regulations in producing yeast for baking and for industrial ethanol production.

The company’s also agreed to buy emergency response equipment for local responders, items including protective suits and boots, a thermal imaging camera, and chemical classifier strips. In addition, the E-P-A says Red Star will buy hazardous waste containment systems to be donated to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department and the Linn County Hazmat Team.

OSU, UT and WVU Claim Big 12 Football Week 9 Awards

Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II earned his third-consecutive Big 12 football offensive weekly award. He was joined by teammate Leon Johnson III (co-newcomer), West Virginia’s Beanie Bishop Jr. (defensive and co-newcomer) and Texas’ Xavier Worthy (special teams) as week nine honorees. Gordon is the first player to collect three consecutive awards since K-State’s Morgan Burns earned four straight special teams accolades from Nov. 16-Dec. 7, 2013. Worthy picked up his second career recognition.

Facing the No. 18 rushing defense in the nation, Gordon rushed for 271 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries (10.8 yards per carry) while adding four catches for 21 yards to account for 292 all-purpose yards in Oklahoma State’s 45-13 win over Cincinnati. He is just the second player in program history with back-to-back games of 250+ rushing yards, joining Barry Sanders in 1988. The sophomore also joins Boston College’s Andre Williams (2013) as the only two FBS players over the last 20 seasons with 250 scrimmage yards in three straight games. Gordon’s rushing total marked the most for an FBS player last week and the fourth-most for an FBS player in a game this season. He has the No. 1 and No. 4 rushing games this year, as well as three of the top five scrimmage yard games this year. His past two games mark the most rushing yards for an OSU player in a two-game span (553) since Barry Sanders posted 625 yards against Iowa and Texas Tech in 1988. The performance also made him the only Power Five player with multiple 200+ yard games on the ground this season. Gordon has reached more than 1,000 rushing yards for the season in just eight games, marking the quickest a Cowboy has surpassed the mark since Chuba Hubbard needed just six games in 2019. He has five straight games with more than 100 rushing yards. Gordon and Hubbard are the only Cowboys since 2010 with five straight games of 100+ rushing yards. He has posted 11 total touchdowns in the past four games, including multiple scores in three straight games. Gordon is the FBS leader in rushing yards (1,087) and rushing yards per game (135.9). He also leads the nation in carries of 20 yards (15), 30 yards (12) and 40 yards (6). He is among the top 10 FBS players in rushing yards per carry (No. 2 – 7.71), all-purpose yards per game (No. 3 – 161.0), rushing touchdowns (No. 9 – 10) and total touchdowns (No. 10 – 11).

Bishop recorded two interceptions in WVU’s 41-28 win at UCF to improve his total to four on the season. The returns went for 31 and 20 yards. He has more interceptions this year than the team had all of last season. Bishop became the first Mountaineer since 2021 to record at least two picks in a game (Josh Chandler-Semedo at Kansas). He also added four tackles and a pass breakup. The graduate student leads the league in passes defended (16) and pass breakups (12) and is tied for second in interceptions. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in human resource development from Minnesota last May.

Worthy raced 74 yards for the first punt return touchdown of his career in Texas’ 35-6 win over BYU. The TD followed the Cougars’ first possession and was the opening score of the game. It was the first punt return touchdown by the Longhorns since 2018 and the 10th-longest punt return in program history. Worthy also caught four passes during the game to extend his streak of games with a reception to 33-consecutive, the fifth-longest streak in program history. The junior is a physical culture and sports major.

Johnson made his first FBS start on Saturday after spending the last four years at George Fox in NCAA Division III where he earned a degree in mathematics. He hauled in his first FBS reception with three minutes remaining in the first quarter and finished the game with five catches for 149 yards, including a 67-yard gain in the second quarter. Johnson was the first player to surpass 100 receiving yards in his first OSU start since Tay Martin did so against Missouri State on September 4, 2021. Johnson’s receiving total marked the third-most in a Big 12 game this season.
