News

October 5th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, IOWA – An official with Iowa Workforce Development say the agency has launched the Rapid Response program to serve the 215 individuals who will be losing their jobs with the closing of the Ferrara Candy Company in mid-December. The Rapid Response team will provide dedicated services to ensure affected employees receive all of the available benefits and have access to important resources for securing future employment.

Beth Townsend, Director of Iowa Workforce Development say “Our number one priority is making sure the workers affected by this transition have the access to the information and resources they need to make informed decisions about the way forward.” Townsend says “Our team of dedicated professionals will work to develop a customized service plan specific to the needs of the individuals impacted by this unfortunate event.”

Wayne J. Pantini, Executive Director of the Union County Development Association, said “We are working with local and state service providers to engage with management at Ferrara Candy Company. Our goal will be to assist the employees in finding new employment or pursue additional skill training to meet the needs of the current job market.” Pantini said also, “We are optimistic that the majority of those affected can find suitable employment by other regional employers and will remain in the community.”

Following notification and confirmation of a layoff, the IWD Rapid Response Team arranges an on-site meeting with the company, union officials (if applicable) and service providers in the area. Employee information meetings are conducted to provide information about services available at IowaWORKS offices which include:

  • assistance finding new employment
  • resume workshops
  • career counseling
  • training in a new career
  • assistance filing unemployment insurance (UI) benefits

Other state agencies or community-based organizations are invited to participate in the meetings. These services are fully funded by the Department of Labor through the State of Iowa under the Dislocated Worker Program.

The IowaWORKS office in Creston is collecting a list of businesses who would like to be in contact with the Ferrara Candy Company employees. Once the plan of services is developed, these businesses will be notified with dates, times and opportunities to meet with the impacted employees. If you are interested in being placed on this list, please contact Pam Varner at pamela.varner@iwd.iowa.gov or 641-782-2119 ext. 24.

Teen arrested for threat in Algona school closure

News

October 5th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Classes were disrupted at several Iowa schools this week by threats of violence. At least one person has now been arrested – but only for a threat that led to the closing of Algona schools on Wednesday.

A 16-year-old Algona youth has been charged with “Threat of Terrorism,” a class D Felony. The teen is believed to have made a threat of violence in a social media post on Tuesday evening. Algona schools were closed on Wednesday because school officials and police believed that the threat was directed towards the school district. No other suspects are being sought in the case.

Three other schools in north-central Iowa were put on “lockdown” for a while on Wednesday — Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Eagle Grove and Belmond-Klemme.

Atlantic Police warns public of secret shopper scam

News

October 5th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Police Department is warning the public of a recent scam that has entered the area. If you receive a flyer from MarketResearch.com in reference to a secret shopper program at Wal-Mart, it is a scam.  This has been found to not be a legitimate business so their correspondence should be disregarded.

The scam asks people to participate in a secret shopper survey for the local Wal-Mart store and then use the MoneyGram Transfer service to send money back to the phony company. The instruction letter tries to make victims believe that the wire transfer is just a part of the evaluation process.  The scam promises participants $300 in compensation which comes in the form of a phony check.

Once again if you receive this proposition from this company please disregard.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Farm Rescue farm aid nonprofit in the Plains has reached another milestone. The organization this week is delivering donated hay to south central North Dakota rancher Doug Bichler. He lost his right arm in a hay baling machine accident this past summer, while also dealing with devastating drought. It’s the 500th case for Farm Rescue since it was started in 2005.

Farm Rescue provides free physical labor for farmers and ranchers in need in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Montana and Nebraska. Founder Bill Gross says he considers it an honor to have been able to help 500 farm families who have experienced crises. Bichler is still recovering from his ordeal and says the assistance from Farm Rescue will help him keep his herd of cattle through the winter.

Spartans and Knights clash in playoff type game Friday

Sports

October 5th, 2017 by admin

It will be a playoff type football game on Friday night in Exira as the Exira-EHK Spartans (4-2, 3-1) play host to the Fremont-Mills Knights (4-2, 3-1). Both teams come in with one loss in 8-man District 7 play, and that loss was to the Sidney Cowboys for both teams. With the squads tied for the second spot in the district, the winner has a strong chance to take that second playoff spot.

Fremont-Mills Head Coach Jeremy Christiansen said he feels like the playoffs start the instant you get that first loss in district play with just two teams making the postseason.

The Knights have dealt with some injuries and suspensions early in the season but Coach Christensen said this week they should be back to pretty much a full squad. The Knights have been led by Junior quarterback Mason Vanatta who has thrown for 818 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also leading the team with 684 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground. Coach Christensen said Vanatta just finds a way to get things done.

Coach Christensen said the defensive side of the ball is where his team has shown the most improvement throughout the season and this week they will face a balanced Spartan attack. Exira-EHK quarterback Josh Pettepier has thrown for 867 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Spartans have run the ball by committee with Cole Burmeister, Cole Madsen, and Jayden Goodwin all over 45 carries on the year.

Cole Madsen and Ian Leader have forged the way for the Spartan defense. Madsen leads the team in tackles and has two fumble recoveries on the year. Leader is the second leading tackler and has one interception to his name.

We’ll have the Spartans and the Knights on KJAN Friday night. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call from the top of the hill in Exira with pregame at 5:30pm and kickoff at 5:45pm. Catch the action on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, on the KJAN mobile app, and on KJANTV.  Tune in for our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? to start the night at 5:00pm.

Atlantic carries confidence from Glenwood loss into ADM tilt

Sports

October 5th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans (3-3, 1-3) return home this week to face the ADM Tigers (1-5, 0-4) in a Class 3A District 7 football game. Atlantic is coming off a gutty effort in a 42-20 loss at Glenwood last week. Trojan Head Coach Mike McDermott said his team was disappointed with the loss but they gained some confidence in that game from the way they were able to fight back.

The Trojans were able to get a number of guys involved in the offense against the Rams and they hope to carry that over to this week. The weather outlook is wet for Friday night and Coach McDermott said due to that, they are focusing a little more on the run game this week.

ADM has been in a number of close games this season and dropped a 14-13 game last week to Denison-Schleswig on a late score. The Tigers like to spread the field and let Quarterback Matthew West distribute the ball around and take off on the run as well. Coach McDermott said the Trojan defense will need to be ready to play sound assignment football.

You can hear a full interview with Coach McDermott on Friday afternoon at 4:45pm on Trojan Preview. The Trojans and Tigers are set for a 7:30pm kickoff at the Trojan Bowl Friday night.
