USDA releases Iowa corn and soybean harvest predictions

Ag/Outdoor, News

October 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — A new report predicts this year’s corn and soybean harvests in Iowa will fall short of records set last year. The USDA report is based on conditions as of October 1. The forecast calls for the corn yield in Iowa to average 191 bushels per acre, up four bushels per acre from the September forecast but down 12 bushels per acre from last year. Overall, Iowa corn production is forecast at 2.46 billion bushels.

If the prediction holds, it would mark the third highest yield and production on record behind 2016 and ’15. Soybean production is forecast at 557 million bushels, with a yield of 56 bushels per acre. If realized, it would be the second highest production on record behind last year. The yield forecast would be the third highest on record. Last year, the average soybean yield in Iowa was 60 bushels per acre.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Ohio State-Nebraska game matches two of the five programs with the most major college football wins in history. The teams are in very different places entering Saturday night’s game in Lincoln. The ninth-ranked Buckeyes beat Nebraska by 59 points last year in Columbus and have dominated four straight opponents since their loss at home to Oklahoma.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The unbeaten Chiefs are looking to get even when the Steelers roll into town Sunday. It was Pittsburgh that knocked the AFC West champs out of the playoffs last season, in their own house no less. But the Chiefs and Steelers are different teams now, with Kansas City flying high and Pittsburgh trying to bounce back from a humiliating loss to Jacksonville.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have pushed the boundaries of offensive creativity this season and that’s a big reason for their 5-0 start. Jet sweeps and read-options and a whole bunch of other sets have allowed coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy to keep defenses guessing. And they’ve allowed the Chiefs’ biggest offensive stars to show off.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor seems to be adapting just fine to college football. The true freshman is fourth in the nation in rushing at 153.5 yards per game heading into Saturday’s game against Purdue. Ohio State’s J.K. Dobbins and Iowa’s A.J. Epenesa have also made impressive starts as true freshmen. At rebuilding Illinois, coach Lovie Smith has started 13 true freshmen this season, more than any school in the country.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has long been accustomed to responding to failure. How will the Cyclones handle success? Iowa State is on a roll heading into a game that nearly everyone expects to be a blowout in favor of the Cyclones. Iowa State is a 21-point favorite for Saturday’s matchup against Kansas _ just a week after stunning Oklahoma 38-31 in Norman as a 31-point underdog.

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — A prosecutor says no charges will be filed against a policeman who shot and killed a fleeing 27-year-old Burlington resident. Assistant Iowa Attorney General Scott Brown concluded Thursday that the Oct. 1 shooting of Marquis Jones by Burlington officer Chris Chiprez was a justifiable homicide.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A judge has dismissed a defamation lawsuit against authorities who unsuccessfully sought to convict an Iowa woman in the 1983 deaths of her estranged husband and his girlfriend. U.S. District Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger ruled that Theresa Supino’s defamation claims against Jasper County’s sheriff and county attorney lacked an adequate legal basis. Supino was acquitted of first-degree murder charges in 2015.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Safety regulators have shut down the Iowa trucking company that owned the semitrailer involved in a human trafficking case in which 10 immigrants died in Texas. Pyle Transportation has been placed under an “out-of-service order” by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration after a review found the company’s safety rating was so unsatisfactory that it was unfit to remain in business. Dozens of immigrants were found packed inside a Pyle semitrailer outside a San Antonio Walmart in July.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa State Patrol says a man pulled over in Des Moines after a car pursuit told state troopers that he wanted to be chased because it was on his bucket list. Des Moines television station KCCI reports that the man refused to halt Thursday morning when a trooper tried to stop him on Interstate 80. He finally stopped after leaving the interstate and was taken into custody. That’s when the 46-year-old shared his bucket list story.

Atlantic hopes to secure winning season at Carroll

Sports

October 12th, 2017 by admin

The 2017 Atlantic Trojans football team can do something that hasn’t been accomplished in 5 years, have a winning season. The last time the Trojans put up more W’s than L’s was in 2012 when the team went 5-4.  This year’s group of Trojans can assure at least that same mark with a win at Carroll on Friday night.

Atlantic (4-3) will have to slow down the Carroll (3-4) rushing attack to pick up that fifth W. Tigers’ Head Coach Dennis McCartan said his team likes to wear teams out with their trio of big running backs.

Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said a big key will be getting low and making sure tackles against those large backs. He also said the Atlantic offense will be just as important in helping the defensive effort.

Atlantic has had some success spreading the ball around to a number of talented players and working the edges, which will be an emphasis again this week. Coach McCartan said his team will be looking to get pressure on Jaxson Eden.

Both teams won’t be playing in the post-season but Coach McDermott said there is no lack of motivation for the Trojans with a group of Seniors wanting to leave a positive impact in their last two games.

We’ll have coverage of the Trojans and Tigers on KJAN Friday night. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, and on the KJAN mobile app. You can also catch live streaming video on KJANTV. Catch a full interview with Coach McDermott at 4:45pm on Trojan Preview. Then tune in to our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm followed by Pregame at 6:30pm and Kickoff at 7:30pm from Carroll Stadium.

First award made under new baseball/softball tax rebate law

Sports

October 12th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The Enhance Iowa Board made its first award today (Thursday) under a new program for baseball and softball fields. The board awarded a two-and-a-half million dollar tax rebate — the most allowed — to the BettPlex in Bettendorf. Under the program, a baseball or softball complex with a construction cost of at least 10 million dollars can request a sales tax rebate for admission tickets, merchandise or other goods sold at the complex for up to 10 years.

The BettPlex is a 40 million dollar project that will feature six full turf baseball and softball fields along with facilities for indoor and outdoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, wrestling and sand volleyball.

The bill passed the Iowa Legislature last year after being proposed for the “Prospect Meadows” baseball/soccer complex near Marion.
