The Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department’s Board of Directors met Monday evening at the Senior Citizen Center, while the City Hall renovations are underway.

Parks and Rec Director Roger Herring said he’s been holding discussions with Connect-A-Dock officials, about the possible purchase of power pedestals for the 18 campground pads being constructed at the Schildberg Recreation Area, with the idea being one pedestal would be used for each of the 18 pads.
The Eaton product brochure Herring presented to the Board indicated the units, which have three-different power point receptacles to accommodate varying power demands of campers and RV’s, and can also be used to supply campers and RV’s with water. They would be mounted on a concrete pedestal off the ground, so as to avoid damage from vehicles and even flood water. The power pedestals would operate on a photocell, and be weather-proof. They would cost about $11,000 altogether. The Schildberg Committee will discuss the option, and possible ways to pay for the campground power receptacles, at a future meeting.
In other business, Herring said bid-letting for the Sunnyside Tennis Court reconstruction project will begin this afternoon. As of Monday, there was no sign of the tennis courts, which were removed by crews with the City’s Street Department, in preparation for the reconstruction project. And, Herring said he’s working with Snyder and Associates Engineers for the final design phase of the Parks and Rec Maintenance Building and office. The final design will be presented for approval by the City Council, next month.
Roger Herring said there aren’t too many changes planned so far for the Summer Rec Program in Atlantic, other than he would like to see some management changes associated with the Swimming Program, whereas there would be a manager on site every shift at the Sunnyside Pool. Herring said the managers currently aren’t spending enough time managing the pool, and his time is stretched too thin to respond to every question or problem that arises during the swimming season.
No injuries were reported and no citations were issued, following a rollover accident Monday evening in Montgomery County. The Sheriff’s Office says they received a call at around 6:20-p.m., indicating a single-vehicle accident had occurred on 250th Street southwest of Red Oak, just east of Evergreen Avenue.
When deputies arrived, the learned a 2003 Chevy Impala driven by 18-year old Carl Ray Mertz, of Red Oak, had gone out of control on the gravel. The car entered the north ditch and rolled onto its top, causing about $2,000 damage.

A Council Bluffs man reportedly upset about the amount of playing time his son received on a basketball team, allegedly assaulted a youth basketball coach Saturday afternoon. Police officials told the Daily NonPareil, 33-year old Donald D. Hastie Jr., was cited for simple assault following the incident which took place at around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at Thomas Jefferson High School. in Council Bluffs.
Officials say Hastie allegedly pushed 37-year old David Schmitt, of Council Bluffs, when a dispute arose over the lack of playing time Hastie’s son’s received. Authorities say Schmitt fell over some chairs and injured his hand and wrist.
A note found on a printer in the Red Oak High School media center forced officials to lockdown the school for a little more than three-hours, Monday. Superintendent Terry Schmidt told the Daily NonPareil a staff member found a note that threatened violence in the school, at around 9-a.m. The message indicated the person was upset and might injure themselves or others in the school by using a weapon.
Red Oak administrators contacted the Red Oak Police Department for assistance after determining the note was credible, and the school went into lockdown around from around 9:45 a.m. until a little before 1 p.m. During the lockdown, no one was allowed into or out of the school, as police and school staff searched lockers, backpacks and elsewhere for evidence of a weapon or of the note’s author. Staff were able to determine who had logged in to the school’s wireless server before the note was found.
After numerous interviews with students and other adults in the building – staff members and others at the school for a variety of reasons – authorities determined the school was safe. As a precaution, Red Oak Police officers stayed at the school the rest of the day, but there were no further incidents reported. The last time a string of incidents threatening violence at the school occurred a few years, school officials threatened to hold school on Saturday. That put an end to the threats.
An investigation into Monday’s incident continues,meanwhile, and school officials said they were confident the culprit will be caught and brought to justice.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines Democrat wants to require that school harassment policies address the issue of student bullying on social networking sites. Rep. Bruce Hunter introduced a bill yesterday that would update state guidelines for district bullying and harassment policies to include so-called cyberbullying. It also would require that all alleged incidents be reported to school administrators.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Anti-abortion advocates and lawmakers say changing state laws remains a challenge given the politically divided Legislature. Advocates held a rally in the state Capitol yesterday afternoon with Gov. Terry Branstad, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and other abortion opponents. Branstad said life from the point of conception was a freedom granted by the founding fathers, while Reynolds said the anti-abortion movement supported women.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad says he will travel to Washington to meet with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to discuss extending a state health insurance program set to expire later this year. Branstad said yesterday that he would meet with Sebelius on Friday and discuss extending a federal waiver to continue the IowaCare program, which provides limited health care coverage for about 70,000 Iowans.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — The five final Blockbuster stores in Iowa will close this spring as part of a move to close hundreds of the video rental shops across the nation. The Gazette in Cedar Rapids reports that stores in Ankeny, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Iowa City and Muscatine will close in April, ending a 20-year presence in Iowa.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Ammunition for certain guns is hard to find in Nebraska and Iowa because people worried about the possibility of tougher gun control are buying it up. Demand for ammunition and guns took off after the Dec. 14 shooting in Newtown, Conn., that took the lives of 20 schoolchildren and six adults. The shortages are apparent at gun shows and many stores. Dealers say .223-caliber ammunition used in semiautomatic rifles, 9mm bullets and even .22-caliber bullets seem to be in short supply.
Terry Edwards of Palmyra, Neb. says ammunition supplies were already tight before demand surged. At a gun show in Altoona, Iowa, dealer Kevin King says many customers are afraid they won’t be able to buy the amount they want in the future, so they’re stocking up now.

Authorities in Montgomery County are investigating the theft of copper wire from a piece of machinery. The Sheriff’s Department says the wire was stolen from machinery belonging to Crushed Aggregate Products, LLC, of Red Oak, sometime between Saturday and early this (Monday) morning. An exact dollar amount of the loss is currently not available, but officials estimate it to be more than $10,000.
