Officials with the Harlan Police Department report three recent arrests. On Monday, 51-year old Jeffrey Allen Rowland, of Harlan, was arrested on an active Shelby County warrant. And, 45-year old Richard Eugene Green, of Harlan, was arrested following a call in reference to a robbery at the Settle Inn. Green was transported to the Shelby County Jail where he was charged with Theft in the 4th Degree and making false reports.

On Nov. 10th, 32-year old Amber Lea Nelson, of Harlan, was arrested following a possible domestic situation in the 1800 block of Lincoln Avenue. Nelson was transported to the Shelby County Jail and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault, and Possessing Contraband.

The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce and Cass County Health System are now accepting nominations for the 2017 Angel(s) of Christmas. The Angel of Christmas is a tradition in Atlantic recognizing and thanking area residents who symbolize the true meaning of the season. Angels exemplify the true holiday spirit all year long – putting others first, spreading generosity and sharing the holiday spirit with everyone they meet. Bailey Smith, Executive Director at the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce said “Sometimes we forget the true meaning of the season and I think celebrating people who put others first and spread holiday spirit all year long deserve to be recognized.”

In 2016, Pastor Leon Hodges was named the Angel of Christmas, demonstrating the true meaning of the season by offering his time and talents as a caregiver to the community. Pastor Hodges volunteers his time as a chaplain for UnityPoint Hospice, providing care and concern to the deceased’s family members, has conducted many services when the deceased doesn’t have a religious affiliation and volunteers his time installing and maintaining Lifeline emergency devices for residents throughout Southwest Iowa.

(UPDATE) Officials with the Atlantic High School and Atlantic Police Department investigated a social media threat, this (Tuesday) morning. Atlantic Police Chief Dave Erickson reports that at around 8:54-a.m., Officers were notified of an anonymous SnapChat that indicated a shooting was going to occur at the Atlantic High School at 10-a.m. or at Noon today (Tuesday). Following a lengthy investigation, a 16-year old male was arrested for Threats of Terrorism, a Class-D Felony. The teen was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center in Council Bluffs.

Authorities determined there was no credible threat and that no weapons were found. Officers and faculty believe that there was no real danger to the school.

An eastern Iowa company is recalling 231 pounds of chicken, pork, and beef products. Pride of Iowa Sandwiches, based in Marengo, makes ready-to-eat products for convenience stores and vending machines. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service reports Pride of Iowa made some products between November 2nd and 6th that did not undergo federal inspection and were shipped to retail vending machines in Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The agency notes there have been no reports of anyone getting sick after eating the products.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office says an Afton man reported Monday afternoon, that sometime between October 29th and Nov. 13th, someone took a field camera valued at $100, from a field North of Afton. Anyone with information about the crime should contact the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers reports that his officers were kept busy making several drug related arrests over the weekend. On Friday night, November 10th at approximately 9:00 p.m. officers executed a search warrant at 614 E. Washington Street. The residence is a rental property owned and presently occupied by 49-year old Roger Schaben. Officers recovered controlled substances believed to be methamphetamine and marijuana and numerous items of drug paraphernalia from the home. Officers arrested Schaben, for felony maintaining a home for the gathering of illegal use of drugs and possession of methamphetamine and marijuana. Schaben was taken to the Page County Jail and held on $5,000.00 bail. Also arrested at the residence was 52-year old Tina Benkowich, for possession of marijuana. Benkowich was taken to the Page County Jail and held on $1,000.00 bail. Clarinda Police Department K-9 Raiko and the Page County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the execution of the search warrant and arrests.

On Saturday evening, November 11th at approximately 9:00 p.m. officers arrested 35-year old Krystal Lynn Harbin, of rural Clarinda for second and subsequent offense of a controlled substance believed to be methamphetamine. Harbin was arrested after drugs were found in her possession during a traffic stop at 11th & Grant. Harbin was taken to the Page County Jail and held on $3,000.00 bail.

Police reports have been submitted to the offices of Page County Attorney Carl M. Sonksen for review regarding the filing of formal charges.

The Cass County Board of Supervisors drew lots this (Tuesday) morning, to determine the winner of a tied vote for City Council votes in Cumberland and Wiota. Supervisor Steve Baier had the task of drawing the name of Gary Cooper and Darrin Hardisty, for the third seat on the Cumberland City Council. He did so under a bit of mock pressure from Supervisor Steve Green, who Baeir was “Deciding the fate of the town.”  Baier drew the name of Darrin Hardisty.

Board Chair Gaylord Schelling drew the name of the winner in Wiota. His choices were Deana Spry and Lamar Spies. After grabbing both lots at the same time, Schelling – without looking at whose name he had drawn – tossed one back into the box. The name in his hand was Lamar Spies.

Cass County Auditor Dale Sunderman explained both winners have 10 days from today (Tuesday), to decline their elected seats. He said if the write-in winner does not want the job, they must submit a letter of resignation within 10-days of the canvass. If they fail to do so, the office is vacant if the write-in winner fails to take the Oath of Office at the beginning of the next term. The Board of Supervisors will contact the City Clerks in Cumberland and Wiota to inform them of the winner’s name. The Clerk will then inform the winner officially.

Tomorrow is the Board’s normal, weekly session which begins at 8:30-a.m. The only thing to note on the agenda, is an annual report and Fiscal Year 2019 funding request from the Cass County Library Association.
