Officials with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, Sunday, released information about a single-vehicle personal injury accident which happened one-week earlier. Authorities said just after 1-p.m. on April 14^th, a van driven by Joshua Joel Moses, of Clarinda, and owned by Great Plains Investments, went out of control and crashed near 295^thStreet.

The 2002 Dodge Caravan was traveling north on Colt Avenue, when for reasons unknown it veered to the left crossing the centerline and into the left ditch. Officials say when Moses failed to apply the brakes, the van continued through the ditch and struck a field drive. The impact launched the van into the air, causing it to take out a utility pole guy wire and snapping the pole.

When the van hit the ground, it drove itself into the base/embankment of 295th Street, causing damage to the road. The vehicle finally came to rest with its front tires on the edge of 295th Street and the rear tires in the south ditch. The van was a total loss. Moses was transported to the Clarinda Regional Health Center by Clarinda Medic 1, for treatment of his injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, New Market Fire and Rescue, Clarinda Medic, Clarinda Fire, Clarinda Police Department, Taylor County Secondary Roads and United Electric all assisted at the scene of the crash.

Two people were arrested Sunday evening on separate charges, in Red Oak. According to Red Oak Police, 33-year old Melissa Sue Shirley, of Red Oak, was arrested in the vicinity of East Coolbaugh and Towle Streets, at around 6:10-p.m., for Driving While Suspended, Operating a motor vehicle Without Registration, and for Failure to show proof of Valid Insurance. The woman was released from custody on a citation.

And, at around 9-p.m. Sunday, 50-year old David Lawrence Howe, of Red Oak, was arrested on a Public Intoxication charge. Howe, who was taken into custody in the 400 block of East Coolbaugh Street, was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond, pending an appearance before the magistrate.

National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Ervin says both the Mississippi and Rock rivers are expected to remain high enough near Davenport to cause significant flooding through Thursday.

GRIMES, Iowa (AP) — Police have identified the 71-year-old man who was found dead inside an SUV that plunged into a suburban Des Moines pond. The Polk County Sheriff’s department says Eddy Clark died in the accident in Grimes. Investigators are working to determine why his vehicle wound up in the pond.

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa police officer is recovering after being rear-ended while patrolling Clear Lake, and two men are facing alcohol-related charges. Authorities say Clear Lake Lieutenant Paul Chizek was struck from behind while he was driving on Highway 18 in Clear Lake early Friday. Chizek radioed for help and more officers responded.

RUDD, Iowa (AP) — One man died and another was hurt when a train hit a pickup truck in the northern Iowa city of Rudd. The Iowa State Patrol says the crash happened Saturday morning when a pickup driven by 73-year-old Gary Eilers of Waterloo drove onto the tracks. A passenger in the pickup, 32-year-old Brian Leckness of Waterloo, was killed.

The Atlantic School District’s Board of Education will hold a work session Monday evening at the high school, during which they will accept petitions calling for a bond referendum. As we mentioned during a report last Monday, Superintendent Dr. Michael Amstein said school administrators were circulating a petition trying to get 400 signatures which will enable the election to take place on June 25th, with regard to an $11-million dollar bond issue for Capital Improvement Projects within the district. Amstein said the expansion and improvements are needed because of both the current and Department of Education projected, increases in enrollment. He said for the past few years, the projected enrollment for kindergarten aged students has consistently increased.

The Board will also act on a resolution Monday ordering a Special Election on the Issuance of $11-million in General Obligation School Bonds. In other business, the Atlantic Board of Education will hear a report from the Schuler and Washington Schools’ Building Leadership Team’s (BLT), and hear a presentation regarding District Finances, from Gary Sinclair, Senior Financial Advisor with PMA Financial Network.

The Board’s meeting begins at 7:30-p.m., in the Atlantic High School Media Center.

NEVADA, Iowa (AP) — Officials say they have uncovered a large-scale theft and money-laundering operation involving a former Iowa Department of Transportation employee and another man. The Iowa Department of Public Safety says 56-year-old David Weigel of Nevada, Iowa and 59-year-old Grady Marx of Sioux City were arrested Saturday after state, local and federal authorities executed search warrants in three counties in central and western Iowa. Weigel, who worked for the Transportation Department from 1995 to 2011, and Marx are charged in warrants with theft, conspiracy to commit theft, money laundering and criminal conduct. Weigel is also charged with felonious misconduct in office. Investigators say Weigel sold department land and fraudulently charged for maintenance, keeping nearly $240,000. Marx is accused of collecting nearly as much for mowing and other maintenance he did not perform.

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s Mississippi River communities have been preparing for flooding as the river’s waters continue to rise following days of heavy rain. City employees and volunteers have erected a sandbag barrier around much of Burlington’s Memorial Auditorium in an effort to keep rising water out of the building, and officials in Dubuque have closed several flood gates.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — U.S. Senator Tom Harkin is endorsing fellow Democrat Bruce Braley to replace him in the U.S. Senate. Harkin announced his support for Braley in yesterday’s press release. The 54-year-old Braley announced in February that he’d seek the Senate seat held for decades by Harkin, who won’t seek re-election.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The chief of staff for Republican Governor Terry Branstad says he proud of his staff for producing a video that Democrats say mocks them for their position on education reform and funding. Chief of Staff Jeff Boeyink told The Des Moines Register on Friday his staff succeeded in the 1-minute, 45-second video in restating the governor’s education priorities.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A drop in federal donations has left Iowa food banks low on supplies and hopeful the Legislature will approve funding for the organizations. Food bank officials say U.S. Department of Agriculture donations to organizations in Iowa and part of Nebraska are more than 1 million pounds less than in previous years. Last year, Governor Terry Branstad vetoed a bill including $500,000 in aid to food banks.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — While most of the education debate in the state Capitol this year has been on how to improve teachers and enhance schools in Iowa, some lawmakers are focused on a very different educational goal — seeking to reduce regulations for homeschooling families. Language added to an education bill passed in the Republican-controlled state House in February would remove oversight for some households that homeschool their children. The issue could complicate negotiations as Republicans try to reach a compromise with the Democratic-controlled Senate on an education overhaul plan. Some Republicans have made clear that they will not support the overall education policy plan without these provisions. Democrats are noncommittal on the homeschooling proposals. Democratic Senate President Pam Jochum, of Dubuque, says it would “receive a lot of discussion in our caucus.”

A Canadian Pacific train pushed the pickup about a quarter of a mile down the tracks. A passenger in the pickup, 32-year-old Brian Allen Leckness of Waterloo, was killed. Eilers was flown to a Mason City hospital and then moved to a hospital in Rochester, Minn. He was in critical condition Saturday night.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports an arrest of an Omaha man early Friday (4/19) morning.  Officers responded to a call of an irrigation pivot alarm on Railroad Avenue in Fremont County at approximately 12:44am Friday.  Deputies discovered a Chevy van that was reported stolen out of Omaha and proceeded to conduct an extensive search of the area. The search resulted in the arrest of 53-year-old Thomas Allen Deloa of Omaha on two counts of second degree theft.

Deloa is being held on $10,000 bond and the case is still under investigation and other arrests may be possible.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol and the Shenandoah Police Department K-9.

The Red Oak Police Department reports the arrest of 33-year-old David Daniel Wells of Red Oak on Saturday (4/20) at 4:51pm.  Wells was stopped driving a 1985 Chevy Camaro and was arrested for driving while suspended and having no proof of insurance.  Wells was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on $566.25 bond.

The Iowa State Patrol has reported a fatal single vehicle rollover crash occurred at approximately 1:10am this (Saturday, 4/20) morning in Monona County.

The vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 141 just south of Pecan Avenue when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and drove onto the right shoulder.  The driver then over-corrected and lost control of the vehicle, crossing both lanes of traffic, and entered the east ditch and rolled several times.

The crash is currently under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol to determine the identity of the driver.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call for a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 2 at the intersection with the northbound exit of 1-29 at 10:38am Friday (4/19) morning.

A semi driven by 47-year-old David Martin of Yukon, OK was exiting I-29 northbound when he failed to yield to an eastbound semi on Highway 2 that was driven by 68-year-old Robert Davis of Hopkins, MO.  Davis was transported from the scene by Mercy Air Care, while Martin was treated and released on scene.

Martin was cited for failure to yield from a stop sign.  The Iowa DOT had closed Highway 2 for cleanup of debris until safe passage was available.  The Fremont County Sheriff’s Officer was assisted by Iowa Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Iowa DOT, Percival Fire and Rescue, Sidney Fire and Rescue, and Nebraska City Fire Department.
