OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Several days of strong winds in late October arrived at the wrong time for many farmers who saw their crops shrink as ears of corn fell to the ground in Nebraska and western Iowa. The damage varied, but in the hardest hit parts of central Nebraska some farmers reported yields dropping from an estimated 250 bushels an acre before the wind to 190 bushels afterward.

SIOUX CITY , Iowa (AP) — Tossing trash on the ground or spitting on the sidewalk will no longer carry the possibility of jail time in Sioux City. The Sioux City Journal reports the City Council recently scaled back the number of violations that specify imprisonment as an optional penalty. Before the move, littering and spitting on a sidewalk carried up to 30 days in jail. Fines for those offenses _ ranging from $65 to more than $600 _ remain in effect.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A Texas woman has been found guilty of vehicular homicide for a Jan. 30 Davenport crash that killed 53-year-old Cynthia Elaine Jones. Hunt, defense spur Chiefs to 26-15 victory over Raiders

Sports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kareem Hunt ran for 116 yards and a touchdown, the Chiefs shut down Derek Carr and Raiders offense and Kansas City held on to beat Oakland 26-15 on Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak.

The suddenly stingy Chiefs (7-6) also made a big statement in the crowded AFC West race. They entered the game tied atop the division standings with the Raiders (6-7) and the Chargers, who played Washington later Sunday and visit Kansas City on Saturday night.

Alex Smith threw for 268 yards and Charcandrick West had a touchdown run for the Chiefs, who held the Raiders without points until Marshawn Lynch’s 22-yard touchdown run with 8:51 to go. By that point, the Chiefs were cruising toward their 14th win in 15 divisional games.

Carr was 24 of 41 for 211 yards with a touchdown and two picks, a far cry from his performance when the teams met in October. Carr threw for 417 yards and three touchdowns that day, including the winning toss to Michael Crabtree on the final play of the game.

That loss was part of a midseason swoon for Kansas City, which started 5-0 but lost six of seven to fall into a tie for the division lead — and put its once-solid playoff prospects in peril. The Chiefs gave them a boost again Sunday behind a defense that was shredded by the New York Jets last week, and that was missing All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters.

The volatile young star was suspended by coach Andy Reid this week for a series of embarrassing incidents, including the throwing of an official’s flag into the stands in the Meadowlands. The trio of Steven Nelson, Darrelle Revis and Terrance Mitchell more than made up for him.

So did Kansas City’s offense, which produced for the second straight week as offensive coordinator Matt Nagy called the plays. The Chiefs got four field goals from Harrison Butker, along with their two touchdown runs, and didn’t have to punt until the fourth quarter.

The Raiders tried to make it interesting late, recovering an onside kick after Lynch’s TD run. Carr connected with Jared Cook on fourth down for another score, and the 2-point conversion trimmed what had been a 26-0 deficit to 26-15 in a matter of minutes. But after receiving the kickoff, the Chiefs’ Albert Wilson made a juggling catch to convert a third down, and that allowed the reigning AFC West champs to mostly run out the clock.

UP NEXT: The Chiefs get another AFC West contender when the Chargers visit Saturday night.

AP source: Gregerson, Cardinals agree to $11M, 2-year deal

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations says reliever Luke Gregerson and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to an $11 million, two-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because the agreement was subject to a physical and had not yet been announced.

Gregerson would get $5 million in each of the next two seasons, and the deal includes a $6 million team option for 2020 with a $1 million buyout. A 33-year-old right-hander, Gregerson struck out 70 in 61 innings for Houston, going 2-3 with a career-high 4.57 ERA in 65 relief appearances.

He did not allow a run in five postseason appearances as the Astros won their first title. Gregerson, a specialist used against right-handed hitters, stuck out Chris Taylor to strand two runners in the fourth inning in Game 5. He got the first two outs in the eighth inning of Game 6, allowing a walk and a single.

Gregerson has pitched in nine big league seasons for San Diego (2009-13), Oakland (2014) and Houston (2015-17), which signed him to an $18.5 million, three-year contract. He played for the U.S. at this year’s World Baseball Classic.

Littering, spitting no longer carry jail time in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY , Iowa (AP) — Tossing trash on the ground or spitting on the sidewalk will no longer carry the possibility of jail time in Sioux City. The Sioux City Journal reports the City Council recently scaled back the number of violations that specify imprisonment as an optional penalty. Before the move, littering and spitting on a sidewalk carried up to 30 days in jail. Fines for those offenses — ranging from $65 to more than $600 — remain in effect.

City attorney Nicole DuBois says a change in state law that goes into effect next year spurred the action. The change requires cities to reimburse defense costs in cases where some defendants are prosecuted for misdemeanor city ordinance violations that carry jail time as a sentencing option.

Strong winds at bad time diminish Nebraska corn crop

Ag/Outdoor, News

December 10th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Overall, the Nebraska corn crop is still estimated to be a good one with 1.66 billion bushels, but the Agriculture Department’s prediction is down from September’s 1.72 billion bushel forecast. But the wind damage will make it harder for many Nebraska farmers to break even because commodity prices were already low.
