DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — MidAmerican Energy says thousands of customers have their power back following severe weather in the area this week. The company says about 500 customers remained without power last night.

RUNNELS, Iowa (AP) — Officials have determined a sinkhole in the Polk County town of Runnells was caused by an old septic tank, not an abandoned mine as some suspected. FAYETTE, Iowa (AP) — A man has been accused of assaulting people at a rural retirement home in northeast Iowa. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office arrested 21-year-old Matthew Saul of Waterloo after responding Wednesday night to a report about an out of control man at Prairie View Residential Care Facility in Fayette. Movie theaters aren’t the only ones showing superheroes this weekend. The city of Carson will showcase Mayhem in the Manor, a play written by local favorite Wilma Laughlin, at the Carson Community building. Laughlin says you will see all your favorite superheroes but not in the typical fashion “It is a light hearted dinner theater with all the superheroes such as Spiderman, Superman and Batman in the nursing home. It is a comical thing with bad guys trying to get the good guys. It is just a light hearted comedy.”

She says the cast in the play are made up of local actors and actresses, “We are not a super class act theater but we are a fun bunch of people. If you enjoy watching local people, you will have fun with this.” Laughlin has written several plays for Carson events but says the time has come to slow down “These plays are getting to me a little bit. I think this is the last play so if you want to see one more play by me you better come.”

Mayhem at the Manor will be shown tonight (Friday) and Saturday with doors opening at 6-pm and the show beginning at 6:30-pm. Tickets are on sale for $27 each and include a dinner beforehand. All proceeds go towards the city of Carson placing an electronic Daktronics message board for the Riverside Community. The message board will keep community members up to date on local events, Dreamland Theater movies, school activities and annual town celebrations. Tickets can be purchased by contact the Carson City Hall at 712-484-3636.

News

June 14th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Residents and businesses in Treynor can expect faster internet service thanks to efforts of the Mayor and others, who took charge of an effort broaden access to wireless communications. According to the Daily NonPareil,Mayor Bryce Polland and a group of citizens in Treynor approached Spiral Communications of Glenwood, for help. The company says it plans to install fiber optic cables throughout Treynor proper and broaden wireless access to surrounding rural areas.

Mayor Polland said he’s heard concerns from residents who need faster Internet speeds to work at home. Officials with Spiral Communications say expanded internet service also contributes to economic development, by attracting new businesses to town and assisting existing, home-based businesses.

Company officials say they hope ground work on the project can start in July and be completed by October. They will run the fiber optics underground in some areas, and connect to telephone poles in others.

Special prosecutors appointed in Pottawattamie County case

News

June 14th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Mills and Harrison County Attorney’s Offices will be called upon to handle cases against a Crescent man who allegedly threatened the Assistant Pottawattamie County Attorney. The Daily NonPareil reports the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Thursday to approve the appointment of special prosecutors to handle cases against 56-year old Paul  Grindstaff, who’s accused of threatening an assistant county attorney.

Assistant county attorney Maggie Reyes asked the board Thursday to allow the Mills County Attorney’s Office to prosecute Grindstaff, who is charged with first-degree harassment and terroristic threats after allegedly sending threatening emails to the Pottawattamie County Attorney’s Office. The paper says a second case involving a theft by Grindstaff will be handled by the Harrison County Attorney’s Office.

Grindstaff was arrested in Omaha in May. According to court documents, a grandchild was removed from his care in Douglas County (Neb.) in February. In April, his guardianship was dissolved. The affidavit in support of Grindstaff’s arrest alleges after the guardianship was dissolved, he continually emailed assistant county attorney Dawn Landon, who was involved in the case because the office represents the Department of Human Services by Iowa Code.

The state alleges the communications threatened bodily harm and intended to intimidate, annoy or alarm the recipient. Grindstaff was released on a $50,000 bond. A preliminary hearing in the case is set for July 10th.Reyes said there is an unwritten agreement between county attorney offices to cover each other in the event of a conflict of interest. She said Pottawattamie County would pay for any costs associated with prosecuting the cases, but they will not pay the other county attorney offices for their work.
