CLINTON, Iowa (AP) — The parent company of Ashford University in Clinton has announced a series of voluntary layoffs due to falling enrollment. KWQC-TV in Davenport reports the parent company, Bridgeport Education, will cut positions to align its employee base with enrollment. Ashford University employs roughly 400 people. University officials declined to say how many they intend to cut, but hundreds have been given the option to voluntarily resign.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Peace activists are marching across eastern Iowa to protest a plan to fly unmanned aircraft from an air base in Des Moines. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that the activists want to send a message. More than a dozen demonstrators are walking from Rock Island, Illinois to Des Moines, to raise awareness about drone strikes.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa fire official is headed to Kosovo for an exchange about disaster preparedness. The Sioux City Journal reports that Assistant Sioux City Fire Chief Jim Clark is scheduled to be in the Balkans this week. Clark is part of a three-person team dispatched to the Balkans to help Kosovo prepare for disasters.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Cedar Rapids police say they are investigating an assault that sent a 72-year-old man to the hospital. Police said officers were called to the scene at Park Court and 2nd Avenue southeast shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday. The unidentified man was taken to a hospital. Anyone with information is urged to call Linn County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-272-7463.

Members of the Elk Horn-Kimballton School District’s Board of Education will hold a regular monthly meeting Monday evening at the High School, in Elk Horn. Among the action items on the agenda for their 7-p.m. session is: The purchasing school buses and an SUV; Bussing students for Whole Grade Sharing, and, approval of changes to the School Calendar for the 2013-2014 school year. The Board is also expected to act on contracts with Kristen Wickensham, for the Middle School Math position, and Special Education teacher Kim Leinen, and they will consider and possibly act on the transferring of funds from the General Fund to the Activity Fund, for the Yearbook Account, if there is a negative balance at the end of June.

Their next regular meeting will take place July 15th.

The Griswold School District’s Board of Education will hold their regular monthly meeting Monday, in the Central Office Board Room at the Middle School/High School Building, beginning at 5:30. During the session, the Board will receive information pertaining to Reading Recovery, and hear a presentation from Massena Telephone.

They’re also expected to discuss and then act on: School lunch prices; The appointment of Level 1 and Level 2 Child Abuse investigators; Legislative priorities; Registration fees; Mileage compensation; Auto and property insurance; A Sharing agreement for swimming and diving; The High School Dance/Drill Team; Negotiations; Fuel bids; Technology support, and various board policies.

Members of the City of Atlantic’s Parks and Recreation Board will hold their regular monthly meeting Monday evening, in the Gazebo at the East Ridge Park. During the session, which begins at 5:15-p.m., the Board will receive updates from Parks and Rec Director Roger Herring, on: the Schildberg Recreation Area campground; Reconstruction of the Sunnyside Park tennis court; the Park Maintenance Building construction project; Boat ramp near the wastewater treatment plant; Summer Recreation Programs, and the Trees Forever Dog Park.

The Board will also discuss holding a special meeting on June 25th, for end-of-year fiscal bill paying.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office says one person was arrested Sunday morning following an investigation into a fight. 18-year old Conner Thibodeaux, of Corning, was taken into custody at around 1:40-a.m., on charges of Minor in Possession of Alcohol, and Public Intoxication.

Officials say the Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a fight which occurred at a residence in Corning. Upon arrival, deputies learned Thibodeaux, who was allegedly involved in the altercation, had left the scene.

He was eventually located in Corning, and brought to the hospital to be checked for injuries before being arrested and brought to the Adams County Jail, where Thibodeaux was being held on $600 bond, pending an appearance before a magistrate.

An elderly man died from injuries he suffered during a fire Saturday afternoon, in Harlan. Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen told KJAN News late Saturday night, 89-year old Bernard Wolfe, a long-time Harlan resident, was found trapped in the basement of his home at 1013 Durant Street, shortly after the fire was reported at around 4:15-p.m., Saturday. Bissen said rescue crews administered CPR on Wolfe, who was transported the Myrtue Medical Center, where he later died. Bissen said the fire started in the basement of the home, when a torch Wolfe was using apparently malfunctioned. Damage to the home was minimal, according to Bissen, and appeared to have been limited to the wiring. Firefighters from Harlan were assisted at the scene by crews from the Westphalia Fire Department, Medivac Ambulance, the Harlan Police Department and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

One person was reportedly trapped inside a residence in Harlan Saturday afternoon, while the basement of the home was on fire. According to dispatch reports, the fire at 1013 Durant Street was called in at around 4:15-p.m. Firefighters from Harlan were assisted at the scene by crews from Westphalia, Avoca and Defiance. Harlan Police, deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Medivac Ambulance were also on the scene. Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen was unavailable for comment late Saturday evening. The Sheriff’s office said crews were still on the scene as of 7:45-p.m.

A Vietnam War Veteran today (Saturday) received numerous medals he had earned but never received following his tour of duty.

Congressman Steve King Presents Medals to Vietnam Veteran Robert Rohlfsen

Iowa Republican Congressman Steve King, from Kiron, presented the medals to Robert Rohlfsen, of Early. Rohlfsen served in the Army as a pilot and Warrant Officer.

In a statement, King said “Today I was reminded of the strength and courage that our veterans exemplify. Robert Rohlfsen said he received these medals in honor of ‘those who were not as lucky as he was’.” King said Rohlfsen “Is an example of the selfless character our veterans exhibit each day, and is a great reminder of why they deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.”

Among the nine medals Rohlfsen received, was the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Air Medal with Numeral 58, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Stars, and the National Defense Service medal.

Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers reports the arrest Friday evening of 37-year old Jason William McCollum. McCollum, who’s from Clarinda, was taken into custody on a charge of  Possession of a drug paraphernalia device, believed to be used for smoking marijuana. McCollum was arrested at his residence, located in the 300 block of north 20^th St.

Officers were originally summoned to the residence after McCollum called the Clarinda 911 center to report a disturbance at his home, involving some intoxicated guests who McCollum wanted to leave. McCollum was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Page County Jail, where he was being held on a $300 cash bond, pending an initial appearance before the Page County Magistrate
