MVC unbeatens collide as Drake hosts Illinois State

Two teams off to unbeaten starts in Missouri Valley Conference play collide in the Knapp Center when Drake hosts Illinois State, tonight (Wednesday). The Bulldogs are considered a surprise at 2-0 while the Redbirds are the defending Valley champs. Drake coach Niko Medved feels a tough non conference schedule got his team ready for the league race.

DONALD WILLIAM HURST, 92, of Dexter, died Dec. 31st, at the Stuart Community Care Center.Funeral services for DONALD HURST will be held 11-a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6th, at the Dexter Presbyterian Church. Johnson Family Funeral Home has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the Dexter Presbyterian Church on Saturday, from 10-until 11-a.m.; Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

Burial will be in the Dexter Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Dexter Presbyterian Church, and/or Stuart Community Care Center.

DON HURST is survived by:

His sons – David (Debbie) Hurst, of Polk City, and Roger (Cynthia) Hurst, of Emmetsburg.

Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of friends. 

Adams County woman arrested in Villisca Tuesday night

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports 39-year old Jill Christine Currin, of Corning, was arrested at around 9:30-p.m. Tuesday, in Villisca. Currin was taken into custody on a valid Page County warrant for Violation of Probation. She was being held in the Page County Jail on a $2,000 cash only bond.

Red Oak Police report, 1/3/18

Red Oak Police report two arrests took place, Tuesday. 60-year old Charles William Taylor, of Red Oak,was arrested at around 3:37-p.m. on two active Montgomery County warrants for Possession of a Controlled Substance. Taylor was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and held on a $5,000 bond. And, at around 6:08-p.m. Tuesday, 25-year old Heather Nicole Jones, of Red Oak, was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance. She was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $1,000 bond.

Fatal house fire in Oakland, Sunday

Multiple Omaha-area news outlets are reporting a fatal house fire took place at around 5:30-p.m. Sunday, in Oakland. Authorities told the media firefighters received a call about a fire at the home near Highway Route 6 and Oakland Avenue.

Officials identified the victim as 48-year old Karen Wilburn, of Oakland, who was found inside the home. She was the only occupant. Firefighters are still investigating a cause.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Zavier Simpson and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman each scored 15 points and Michigan beat host Iowa 75-68, extending its winning streak to six games. Charles Matthews scored 14 points and Isaiah Livers had 13 for the Wolverines (13-3, 2-1 Big Ten), who won in Iowa City for the first time since 2011.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith could be playing for his legacy in the playoffs this season. His future in Kansas City is uncertain, even after the best season of his 13-year professional career. But a win over the Titans on Saturday would go a long way toward ensuring he is never forgotten.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs put wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas and running back Akeem Hunt on injured reserve and added wide receiver Marcus Kemp and running back C.J. Spiller to the roster ahead of the playoff game against Tennessee. Thomas and Hunt were hurt against Denver over the weekend. Kemp has been on the practice squad and Spiller has been on and off the roster since the offseason.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bill Snyder will return next season for his 27th with Kansas State. The 78-year-old coach had been mulling his future since the Wildcats beat UCLA in the Cactus Bowl last week. Snyder ultimately announced in a brief statement that he would return, ending growing speculation in some circles that he might retire for a second time. Snyder informed his family of his intentions before telling his assistants in a brief meeting, a person familiar with the process told The Associated Press.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Keenan Evans scored 15 points, Norense Odiase and Justin Gray had 12 apiece, and No. 18 Texas Tech never trailed in beating No. 10 Kansas 85-73.

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Glynn Watson Jr. scored 19 points and Nebraska took control down the stretch to beat Northwestern 70-55. James Palmer Jr. added 18 points, 15 in the second half, Isaac Copeland scored 13, and the Cornhuskers (11-5, 2-1 Big Ten) won their fourth straight.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit alleging Gov. Kim Reynolds broke the law when she transferred $13 million from a reserve fund to balance the state budget. The lawsuit was filed against Reynolds and Department of Management director Dave Roederer by Rep. Chris Hall, D-Sioux City, the ranking member on the House Appropriations committee. It asks a judge to declare that Reynolds’ proclamation ordering the fund transfer in September was illegal and to void “all actions” taken as a result

OSCEOLA, Iowa (AP) — Osceola police say crews have found a body in a house destroyed by fire Sunday. KCCI-TV reports police said Tuesday that fire crews had found the body in the remains of the structure in the southern Iowa city. The body was taken to the Iowa State Medical Examiner to be examined and identified. The fire’s cause remains under investigation.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Attorney Brad Hart has been sworn into office as mayor of Cedar Rapids. Hart became mayor of Iowa’s second-largest city Tuesday morning, nearly a month after defeating former City Council member Monica Vernon in a runoff election. Hart says his priorities would include flood protection, affordable housing and hearing from the city’s young people about their needs.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines saw the highest number of homicides in nearly 40 years in 2017. That’s according to police data. The 25 homicides last year in Iowa’s largest city is the greatest amount since 1978, when 27 people were killed. The Des Moines Register reports that law enforcement officials attribute many of the homicides to soured personal relationships, gang-related violence and a trend of young adults using guns to solve conflicts and social media disputes.
