Upcoming Cass County Conservation Board events

The Cass County Conservation Board has a couple of events for you to mark on your calendar. A Full Moon Owl Prowl Hike will be held at the Cold Springs Park in Lewis,  on Thursday February 1st 2018 at 7 PM. And, a Sweethearts Snowshoe Hike will be held at the Pellett Memorial Woods outside of Atlantic, on February 17th 2018 at 7 PM.

Come out for a great night hike, who knows what nature has waiting for you! The Full Moon will light the way! Together, you and Conservation staff will hike and try to call in various species of Owls that may be in the park that night! All ages are welcome!

Snowshoes (in a variety of sizes) will be available for the Showshoe Hike. The event WILL be CANCELLED with “NO SNOW!” Both events FREE, Dress for the weather!

GLEN B. HUEY, 93, of Manilla (& formerly of Irwin), died Saturday, Jan. 20th, in Manilla. Funeral services for GLEN HUEY will be held 11-a.m. Tues., Jan. 23rd, at the Irwin United Methodist Church. Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 22nd, from 3-until 8-p.m., with the family greeting friends from 4-until 6-p.m.; Online condolences may be left at www.burmeisterjohannsen.com.

Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Irwin.

GLEN HUEY is survived by:

His sons – Marlin (Barbara) Huey, of Ankeny; Roger (Janet) Huey, of Atlantic, and Tom (Delores) Huey, of Harlan.

His daughters – Rosemary (Charles) Chisholm, of Charlottesville, VA., & Sherri McQuaid, of LaVista, NE.

His sister – Merle Carbo, of Atlanta, GA.

12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, other relatives & friends.

Monday: Snow likely, possibly mixed with rain, becoming all snow after 5pm. Patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, cloudy, with a temperature rising to near 37 by noon, then falling to around 33 during the remainder of the day. Windy, with a northeast wind 10 to 15 mph becoming north northwest 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
Monday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow before midnight. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 22. Windy, with a north northwest wind 16 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Saturday’s High in Atlantic was 49. Our 24-hour Low (ending at 7-a.m. today) was 21. At 7-a.m., it was 38.

A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM LATE SUNDAY NIGHT
THROUGH MONDAY EVENING (12-a.m. Monday through 12-a.m. Tuesday)

* WHAT…Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the morning commute on Monday. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch are possible.

* WHERE…Parts of north central into parts of west central Iowa.

* WHEN…From late Sunday night through Monday evening.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Winds gusting as high as 40 mph will cause patchy blowing and drifting snow.

Iowa early News Headlines: Sunday, 1/21/18

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A winter storm has Nebraska and parts of Iowa and Kansas in its crosshairs. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for most of Nebraska, starting Saturday evening in western Nebraska and continuing through Sunday night across much of the state. Much of Iowa and a section of Nebraska from north of Omaha to an area south of Hastings could see a wintry mix and freezing rain.

NASHUA, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials have identified a man shot by police earlier this week in northeast Iowa as a Minneapolis resident. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said late Friday that 29-year-old Jihad Merrick died after being shot on Highway 218 in Bremer County in a standoff with police and after he had hit an officer with his car. The names of the officers involved haven’t been released.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A commission has told lawmakers that repeated cuts to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources threatened its ability to protect the state’s air and water as the reductions have forced the agency to leave more than 100 positions vacant. The Des Moines Register reports an Environmental Protection Commission report noted the Iowa DNR’s budget had been cut from $22 million in 2009 to $11.17 million in the current budget year. The cuts have come amid rising concerns about Iowa’s polluted waterways.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A homeless shelter in western Iowa will be starting a Girl Scouts troop. The Omaha World-Herald reports that Micah House in Council Bluffs will begin holding troop meetings next month. The shelter received a $1,000 grant from the Pottawattamie Youth Council to start the troop. The shelter’s executive director was inspired after reading about a troop expanding to homeless shelters in New York City.

Visibility expected to drop to the 1 to 3 mile range through this morning, with some locations experiencing periods of dense fog of 1/2 a mile visibility or less.

Additionally, in locations with temperatures below freezing, primarily along and north of highway 20, freezing fog is possible.

Please travel with extra caution. Be alert for changing and reduced visibility due to fog. Untreated roads may become slippery in some locations where dense fog is present.

Inurnment will be in the Shelby Cemetery at a later date.

RICHARD “DICK” CAPPEL, 76, of West Des Moines (Formerly of Atlantic) died Friday, January 19th at  Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. Funeral services for DICK CAPPEL will be held Tuesday, January 23rd at 11:00am in the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Visitation with the family will be held Monday, January 22nd from 5:00pm-8:00pm in the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Des Moines Christian School.

Wife: Diane Cappel of West Des Moines.

Exira-EHK holds on to beat Kuemper Catholic in girls hoops Saturday

The Exira-EHK Spartans girls basketball team held serve on their home floor Saturday evening with a 57-52 win over the Kuemper Catholic Knights.  The Spartans set the tone early with their tough defense and raced out to a 16-5 early lead and led by 5 at 18-13 at the end of the 1st. The Spartans pushed that advantage to 13 by halftime 35-22. Kuemper Catholic clawed their way back within 4 by the end of the third. The Knights would take a one point lead midway through the fourth quarter at 50-49. That was their first lead since a 3-2 advantage early in the game. The Spartans responded immediately as freshman Tatum Grubbs drove to the hoop and got fouled. She stepped up and hit the free throws to put the Spartans back ahead by one and they wouldn’t trail again.

Free throws were big in sealing the victory as the Spartans made 11-12 in the fourth quarter and 17-23 for the game. Sophia Peppers went 8 of 8 at the stripe in the fourth quarter and finished as the leading scorer with 19 points. Grubbs finished with 12 and Kealey Nelson had 11. The Spartans improved to 14-1 and have a big game at CAM next on Tuesday night.

The Knights were led by 17 points from Aimee Adams and 12 from Kara Peter. The Knights are now 11-5 and will host Harlan next Friday.
