SW IA woman involved in 3 vehicle crash N. central IA crash

News

January 8th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

A woman from Pottawattamie County was the driver of a vehicle involved in a three-vehicle accident Sunday  evening, in north central Iowa. The Iowa State Patrol says 20-year old Carli Jo Fenn, of Carson, was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am that slipped onto the south shoulder while traveling east on Highway 20, in Hardin County.

Fenn over-corrected, which sent the car into the median and onto the west bound lane. In that lane, the car struck a 2016 Toyota Highlander SUV, and a 2015 Ford pickup. The accident happened at around 4:35-p.m.

The driver of the SUV, 52-year old David Pietan, of Johnston, was injured in the crash and transported by Ackley Ambulance to a hospital in Iowa Falls. Neither Fenn, nor the driver of the pickup, 22-year old Jordan Ingram, of Oelwein, were injured.

The State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and E-Squad, Ackley Fire/Ambulance, and Steamboat Fire/Ambulance.

Maryland uses second-half surge to beat Iowa 91-73

Sports

January 8th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Freshman Bruno Fernando scored a career-high 21 points, Anthony Cowan Jr. added 15 and Maryland beat Iowa 91-73 Sunday night to keep the Hawkeyes winless in the Big Ten. Rebounding from a 30-point loss to No. 1 Michigan State just three days earlier, the Terrapins (14-4, 3-2) used a second-half surge to secure their eighth win in nine games.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery was ejected 45 seconds before halftime after receiving two straight technical fouls for animatedly arguing a traveling call on sophomore guard Jordan Bohannon. The Hawkeyes (9-9, 0-5) hung in there without McCaffery, but faded in the latter stage of their third game in six days. Isaiah Moss led Iowa with a career-high 25 points and Bohannon had 17.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Clayton Custer scored 11 points and Ben Richardson hit a big 3-pointer to spark a late run as Loyola-Chicago rallied for a 56-50 victory over Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon.

The Ramblers (12-4, 2-2 Missouri Valley Conference), who snapped a five-game skid on the road in league play, trailed 48-47 when Richardson connected from long range to ignite a game-ending 9-2 run over the final 3:04. Bennett Koch totaled 17 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots for UNI, while Tywhon Pickford added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Lohaus scored 11 with six boards.

Loyola-Chicago shot 41 percent from 3-point range, but just 31 percent from inside the arc. Northern Iowa, which had a 26-23 lead at halftime, hit just 6 of 20 from distance and shot 36.5 percent overall. The Panthers have lost six straight.
