Atlantic’s Mayor announces re-election bid

Atlantic Mayor Dave Jones has announced his intention to run for re-election. Jones told KJAN News he feels his accomplishments over the past four-years include helping to lead the City to improve its streets, the Schildberg Recreation Area and recreational trails. He said he was also part of helping to secure grants for recreational projects. Jones says he thinks he’s done a good job, and is dedicated to moving the City forward in a positive manner during his second-term, if elected.

Jones said Ward 2 Councilperson Kathy Somers has also filed her papers for re-election to a four-year term. Fifth Ward Councilman Shawn Shouse and At Large Councilman Steve Livengood have not announced whether they will run for re-election or not.

The deadline for candidates to file nomination papers for the City Election in Cass County, is September 19th, and must be filed with the City Clerk in their respective communities.

Rear-end collision on I-80 in Adair County injures WI man

The Iowa State Patrol said today (Monday), a Wisconsin man was injured during a collision Friday night on Interstate 80, in Adair County. 77-year old Erwin Schuyler, of Neillsville, WI, who was wearing his seat belt, was transported by Stuart Rescue to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Officials say 53-year old Steven Oshinsky, of Boca Raton, FL, was traveling west on I-80 near the 87.5-mile marker, when his 2008 GMC van came upon a 1985 Dodge van, driven by Schuyler. The GMC struck the Dodge in the rear, causing it to go out of control.

Schuyler’s van entered the median and rolled over, crossed both eastbound lanes of traffic and came to rest upright in the south ditch. Oshinsky’s van came to rest on the north shoulder of I-80.

Attempt to avoid a collision results in a crash

The Page County Sheriff’s Office says no injuries were reported following an accident Saturday evening, about 5-miles west of Coin. Authorities say 24-year old Kimberly Schoonover, of Tarkio, MO., was traveling west on Page County Road J-72/270th Street at around 7:40-p.m., when a pickup driven by 16-year old Jake Cerven, of Blanchard, rolled through the stop sign at the intersection with C Avenue.

Cerven saw Schoonover’s 2012 Chevy Malibu approaching, and attempted to speed-up in order to avoid a side impact collision. The car however, hit the 2012 Chevy Colorado truck int the right rear side, causing damage to the box and bumper of the pickup. The damage was estimated at $2,900. The car  sustained disabling damage, to the tune of about $4,000.

Cerven was cited by deputies for Failing to obey a stop sign, and for Violating his school license permit.

2 Iowans accused of robbing, torturing man

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Two Sioux City residents have been accused of robbing and torturing a man at their apartment.  Police say 33-year-old Melissa Lowe and 32-year-old Brandon Keleher were arrested Saturday morning. Online court records say they’re both charged with two felonies: willful injury and robbery.

Officers were sent to the apartment after a neighbor complained about a disturbance there. The officers say they found a man who’d been stabbed and burned with a kitchen utensil that had been heated.  The man said he’d met the couple Friday night. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, and he was released later.  Lowe and Keleher remained in Woodbury County custody today (Monday).

OWI/Open Container arrest in Adams County

A Corning resident was arrested Sunday morning on alcohol-related charges. The Adams County Sheriff’s Department reports 41-year old Robin Sanders was taken into custody at around 2:45-a.m., following a traffic stop for speeding. Sanders was charged with OWI/1st offense, and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. Bond was set at $1,400. Sanders was being held in the Adams County Jail.

NE man arrested after Sunday evening incident at Lake Icaria

Sheriff’s officials in Adams County say a Nebraska man was arrested Sunday evening following an incident which took place at the Lake Icaria beach. Authorities responded to a possible domestic situation at around 6:30-p.m., and upon further investigation into what was deemed a verbal altercation, arrested 24-year old Nicholas Malone, of Bellevue, NE.

Malone was taken into custody after it was learned a warrant for his arrest was issued in Pottawattamie County. The warrant was issued after Malone failed to appear for his July 26th arraignment for Driving While Barred/Habitual Offender.

Malone was being held in the Adams County Jail pending transportation to the jail in Council Bluffs.

Crawford County man pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter

A Crawford County man accused of murder has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. According to the Daily Nonpareil, 28 year old Ben Wingrove made his plea Friday, in Crawford County District Court. Along with voluntary manslaughter, Wingrove also plead guilty to intimidation with a dangerous weapon and reckless use of a firearm. Each felony charge carries up to a 10 year prison sentence.

Crawford County Attorney Roger Sailer told the paper the agreement would have Wingrove serve the sentences consecutively. The initial charge in the case was first-degree murder, in connection with the death of 29-year old Adam Lary. The incident resulting in Lary’s death occurred March 16th outside of a local tavern in Dow City.

According to court records, the men argued at the bar around 1-am. When Lary walked outside followed by Wingrove, Wingrove fired shots at the Ford Taurus Lary was driving, hitting him in the chest. The vehicle ended up crashing into a garage.

Court documents say Wingrove called 911 and that he admitted shooting at a car that swerved. Deputies found Wingrove standing with a pistol next to him. Lary was transported to a local hospital, and died a short time later.

Theft arrest in Red Oak

Red Oak Police report the arrest early this (Monday) morning of a local woman on a theft charge. 26-year old Megan Diana Reynolds, of Red Oak, was taken into custody at around 2-a.m., on a charge of fifth degree theft. Reynolds was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond.

Fire Fighters called to early morning structure fire

Firefighters from Dexter, Panora and Menlo, along with Stuart Rescue responded to a structure fire early this (Monday) morning, in Stuart. The call about the blaze at a residence on north Centennial Street, came in shortly after midnight. Crews were on the scene for approximately 3 hours. Officials report there was extensive heat and fire damage to the second story of the home. No injuries were reported.
