OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – An Ohio man has been arrested in Omaha after a fatal traffic accident. Omaha police say 30-year-old Evan Shiplett, of Zanesville, Ohio, was arrested on Tuesday evening after he was released from a hospital. He is being held on one count of vehicular homicide.
Police say Shiplett was driving fast when his pickup went out of control and rolled as it left Interstate 480 in eastern Omaha on Friday evening. One of his passengers, 19-year-old Matthew Doty, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was killed. Another passenger, 18-year-old Jacob Levene, of Neola, Iowa, left the scene but was later taken to a hospital.
Jail records say Shiplett remained in custody on Wednesday morning.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A state official says the 102-degree heat recorded this week in southern Iowa made it the hottest day this late in the year in six decades. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says the 102-degree heat was recorded Monday at Donnellson and Keokuk. He says the last time a reading that high occurred this late in the year was Sept. 28, 1953, when 100-degree readings occurred across nearly half of the state.
He says that in all, high temperatures have reached 100 or more 109 times in 38 different Septembers. He says most of those winters were followed by less snow than usual, but one was among the coldest and snowiest winters on record. Bottom line? He says, “with hot September weather you always need to be prepared for anything in Iowa.”
Tuesday’s High in Atlantic was 95, just three degrees shy of the record high for Sept. 10th.
Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press….
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Flags will be flying at half-staff to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Gov. Terry Branstad ordered all the flags at state-run buildings to be lowered Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The governor is encouraging businesses and schools to do the same as a sign of respect for the thousands of people killed in the attacks.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — More than $3.2 million in federal money has been approved for airport runway improvements in Davenport and Ankeny. Sen. Tom Harkin says the Federal Aviation Administration will give $1.8 million to the Davenport Municipal Airport to pay for reconstruction of a deteriorating runway. The FAA also will give nearly $1.4 million to the Ankeny Regional Airport to pay for the relocation of a road that will allow full use of a runway.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Sportscaster Bob Costas will headline the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s annual dinner in January. The economic development organization says it strives to attract nationally recognized figures for its annual event. The dinner is the central Iowa business community’s celebration of the past year’s economic and community development successes.
WAVERLY, Iowa (AP) — A 59-year-old Waterloo man is charged in connection with a head-on crash in northeast Iowa that killed a Minnesota woman. The Bremer County Sheriff’s Office says Verle Dean Wygle is charged with homicide by vehicle. The Red Oak Police Department reports two women were arrested Tuesday evening. 34-year old Brandi Lynn Beckett, and 35-year old Janet Marie Scuturio, both of Red Oak, were taken into custody at around 5:50-p.m. in the 500 block of North 6th Street, on Breach of Peace charges. The women were being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond, each.
Sheriff’s officials in Adams County said a Corning woman was arrested Tuesday evening on a warrant out of Omaha for Failure to Appear. Jessica Goodvin was taken into custody at around 5:35-p.m., after deputies in Adams County saw an abandoned vehicle sitting at the Gun Club at Lake Binder. A check of the vehicle’s registration came back to Goodvin, who also had a warrant for failure to appear in court on a felony shoplifting case. Goodvin was brought to the Adams County Jail and held pending extradition to Nebraska.
Officials with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday their K9’s “Vader” and “Mufasa” recently received bullet- and stab-protective vests thanks to the efforts of Vested Interest in K9s, Inc, a Massachusetts based non-profit organization. The made-to-order vests were recently delivered and will protect the K9’s from bullet and stab wounds as well as blunt force trauma.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c (3) all volunteer charity located in East Taunton, MA, whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests for law enforcement dogs throughout the United States. Each vest costs $950.00 and has a 5 year warranty. The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially life-saving body armor for their four-legged K9 officers. Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., has provided over 435 law enforcement dogs with protective vests since their inception in August of 2009. Over $400,000 in K9 vests have been donated in 35 states including Alaska and Hawaii.
Two recent events made it possible for the charity to provide 217 vests for our four-legged crime fighters across the country. In January 2013, a regional Groupon Grassroots campaign naming Vested Interest in K9s as a charity partner raised over $55,000 which allowed the donation of 53 K9 vests, and a nationwide Groupon campaign in March 2013 raised over $155,000, providing vests for 163 K9s in 30 states.
The organization orders the Armor Express vests made in Central Lakes, MI, exclusively from distributor Regency Police Supply in Hyannis, MA, who also does the custom embroidery on the body armor. New K9 graduates as well as K9’s with expired vests are eligible to apply for the ballistic vests.

SHENANDOAH, Iowa (AP) – A southwest Iowa medical center has suspended a surgeon who is facing disciplinary action by the Iowa Board of Medicine. The Daily Nonpareil in Council Bluffs says Dr. Subir Ray was suspended Friday by the Shenandoah Medical Center. The Iowa board says Ray has been practicing in Iowa without informing the board he had been disciplined by Pennsylvania.
Ray had worked in Harrisburg, Pa., before beginning his work in Shenandoah. He was disciplined by the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine in November 2011. That board concluded Ray had engaged in unprofessional conduct and, during an evaluation, failed to diagnose and manage complications in a timely manner. The Pennsylvania board put Ray on indefinite suspension.
Police in Harlan say no injuries were reported following two, separate, recent accidents. On Saturday, vehicles driven by Donna Stephens, of Woodbine, and Jeanne Beilenberg, of Harlan, collided as Beilenberg’s 2002 Ford was traveling south in the 2300 block of the 23rd Street frontage road. Stephens was pulling out of the service station when her 1985 Chrysler hit the Ford in the rear end, causing minor damage to both vehicles. The damage amounted to $800. There were no citations.
And, on September 3rd, Mellisa Fitzpatrick, of Harlan, was cited for failure to yield upon entering a through highway and failure to have insurance, after her 1999 Dodge collided with a 1997 Ford driven by Eric Rose, of Harlan. The accident at the intersection of 8th and Chatburn Avenue, happened as Rose was traveling west on Chatburn and Fitzpatrick was heading north from Southwest Avenue and crossing Chatburn.
Fitzpatrick’s vehicle hit Rose’ car on the driver’s side, causing his vehicle to veer into a stop sign, while Fitzpatrick’s car to come to rest on the grass, past the curb line.
