Authorities in Montgomery County report a Red Oak teen was been held at the Southwest Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Council Bluffs, after allegedly making terroristic threats last week against another student at the Stanton High School. An investigation by Red Oak Police and the Sheriff’s Office determined 14-year old Dylan Martensen, of Red Oak, allegedly made a threat about bringing a gun to school with intentions of using it against another student. School and law enforcement officials were notified about the threat last Thursday night (Aug. 29th).

Martensen will remain at the Juvenile Detention Center until his hearing takes place within the Juvenile Court System. An investigation into the incident continues.

Omaha television station WOWT is reporting a plea deal has been reached in the case of a western Iowa teen facing two felony counts of sex abuse and one felony count of kidnapping.  The charges stem from allegations made in the winter of 2012 after at least five girls reported 17-year old Kreighton Dale Elwood assaulted them. Elwood is the son of Treynor School District Superintendent Kevin Elwood. In a tentative deal arranged late Tuesday afternoon at the Pottawattamie County Courthouse, the younger Elwood and his attorney have agreed to withdraw a request to have his case moved to juvenile court. He will instead be tried as an adult.

The teen is accused of forcibly removing one victims clothes and fondling her in his truck, covering her mouth with his hand to keep her quiet, and preventing her from leaving the vehicle. In a separate case, Elwood is accused of trying to rip off a victim’s underwear and forcing her to touch him inappropriately. The alleged incidents date back to November 2012. Elwood turned himself in to Pottawattamie County authorities on July 11th.

Court documents say Elwood is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 9th for his arraignment hearing. If found guilty, Elwood faces up to 10-years in prison for each of the alleged felony sexual assaults, and life in prison without parole, for felony 1st degree kidnapping.

LOGAN, Iowa (AP) — A criminal complaint says a 17-year-old boy accused of killing a 5-year-old boy in western Iowa led family members to the body. The Des Moines Register reports the complaint released Tuesday says Cody Metzker-Madsen led family members Saturday to Dominic Elkins’ body at the bottom of a rural Harrison County ravine. Metzker-Madsen and Dominic had lived at the same foster home for nearly three weeks.

The complaint says Metzker-Madsen changed his story to deputies about what happened to Dominic. The complaint also says the teen had blood on his T-shirt. The complaint says Dominic was found with multiple injuries to his head and torso. Autopsy results have not been released. Metzker-Madsen has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder.

Sheriff deputies in Cass County today (Tuesday), arrested 32-year old Steven Robert Pedersen, of Atlantic. Pedersen was taken into custody on a warrant for two Felony charges of Possession with Intent to Deliver.  One charge originated from the Atlantic Police Department, and one charge originated with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Pedersen was brought to the Cass County Jail where he is being held on $10,000 bond.

A call about a reported domestic disturbance Monday evening in Massena resulted in the arrest of 31-year old Brian Harold Eilts, of Massena, on drug, alcohol, assault and other charges. Eilts faces charges that include: Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance 3^rd Offense (Meth); OWI 1^st Offense (a Serious Misdemeanor); and Simple Misdemeanor charges of Criminal Mischief 4^th Degree, Domestic Abuse Assault, Criminal Mischief 5^th Degree and Driving Under Suspension. Eilts was taken to the Cass County Jail where he is being held on $7,500 bond.

The Harlan Police Department report two people were arrested in separate incidents last week. Authorities say 48-year old Curt Anstey, of Harlan, was taken into custody after he turned himself in on an active Shelby County Warrant for 5th degree theft. Anstey was taken to the Shelby County Jail on Wednesday, August 28th.

The previous day, August 27th, 55-year old Ronald Daeges, of Harlan, was taken into custody when officers responded to a disturbance in the 1000th block of 6th Street. Daeges was charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct and taken to jail.

The Harlan Police Department also reports there have been several instances of criminal mischief at the Harlan Skate Park. The structure has been defaced on numerous occasions. The incidents remain under investigation. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person(s) involved in the criminal activity.

Police in Clarinda say one person suffered possible/unknown injuries during an accident Friday afternoon. Officials say vehicles driven by 17-year old Kay Welch, of Bedford, and 17-year old Jo Ann Beason, of Clarinda, were stopped at their respective stop signs located at the intersection of 16th and Grant Streets. Both drivers entered the intersection at the same time, but neither saw the other. As Welch turned left from Grant onto 16th Street, the 2001 Dodge Durango she was driving hit Beason’s 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup. Welch was transported to the Clarinda Regional Health Center by ambulance.

Damage from the collision, which occurred at around 4:30-p.m., Friday, amounted to $3,000. Officials say Welch was cited for Failure to Yield upon making a left turn.

The Shelby County Emergency Management Agency reports a road that sits along the Shelby-Crawford County line, is currently closed for a culvert replacement project that’s expected to last about 3-to 4-weeks. The culvert is located in the 1500 block of Shelby County Street F-16, and Crawford County Avenue Y…a county line road.

The road is located between Shelby County road M-36 and Crawford County’s 300th Street. The closure will be located east of Astor Cemetery and west of 1531 Street F-16, or the Roger Ahrenholtz residence, in Greeley Township, Section 4.

Local residents and emergency responders should plan to take an alternate route until construction is completed. For more information call the Shelby County Engineer at 712-755-5954.

The Atlantic Police Department reports the arrest on Monday of 18-year old Kody Hansen, of Atlantic, and 31-year old Jesse Westover, of Oakland. Hansen was arrested for OWI/1^st offense, while Westover was arrested for Driving While Barred. Both were booked into the Cass County Jail.

And, authorities say no injuries were reported following a fender bender in the Atlantic Hy-Vee parking lot last Friday night. Officials say a vehicle driven by Sarah Scott of Lewis, was backing out of a parking stall at around 8:35-p.m., when the trailer hitch on her vehicle hit the bumper and right rear quarter panel of a legally parked car owned by Keegan Pace, of Marne. The total damage to both vehicles amounted to just over $2,000.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Gov. Terry Branstad wants residents in every part of Iowa to have better access to broadband internet technology.  Branstad on Tuesday announced a new effort designed to improve broadband access and adoption across the state. Branstad says enhanced access will spur economic development, through business creation and by giving rural residents the ability to telecommute.

State officials note that Iowa ranks 11th out of 12 Midwestern states in the TechNet State Broadband Index. The index ranks states looking at household broadband adoption rates, network speeds available and the number of jobs that benefit from broadband technology. Branstad has asked a committee that works on broadband access to provide him with recommendations on how to build out broadband infrastructure and also to create a long-term plan for the state.
