Weather

February 4th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

232 PM CST Sun Feb 4 2018

…Widespread, accumulating snowfall on Monday over Iowa…

Snow will begin to spread into northwest Iowa shortly after sunrise and reach the I-35 corridor over northern and central Iowa around mid-morning and the remainder of central Iowa by midday. Snow covered roadways will create hazardous travel and
visibilities may be reduced at times due moderate to briefly heavy snow. While snow will begin to end later in the afternoon and early evening, this snow will have an impact on the Monday evening commute. Snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches will be common with locally higher amounts. Less snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches
are expected over parts of south central Iowa and near the Minnesota border.

Sac-Crawford-Carroll-Audubon-Monona-Harrison & Shelby Counties: WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM TO 3 PM CST MONDAY…Guthrie and Dallas Counties: WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FROM 6-A.M. TO 7-P.M. CST MONDAY.

* WHAT…Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches with a few locally higher amounts are expected especially closer to central Iowa.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Plan on slippery road conditions, including during the late morning commute on Monday. Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can

Bill that reduces marijuana penalties faces uncertain future

News

February 4th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A proposal in the Iowa Legislature to lessen penalties for people who possess small amounts of marijuana could save the state money and reduce what groups say is racial injustice, yet its chances of advancing this session are unclear.

The bill would make first offense possession of marijuana that’s 5 grams or less a simple misdemeanor instead of a serious misdemeanor, reducing jail time and court fees for those convicted of the charge.

Half of the roughly 3,400 cases of marijuana possession convictions in Iowa during the budget year that ended in 2016 involved 5 grams or less. In the same period, 18 percent of people convicted for first offense marijuana possession were African Americans.

The proposal has been debated a handful of times over the years and comes amid a shift in the national conversation over marijuana use.

Baylor snaps 4-game losing skid, beats Iowa State 81-67

WACO, Texas (AP) — Terry Maston scored a career-high 23 points and Baylor ended a four-game losing streak with an 81-67 victory over Iowa State on Saturday night. The lead changed hands eight times before the Bears went on a 15-0 run over a 2:12 span early in the second half. Baylor had three 3-point plays during the spurt, including one that resulted in a five-point trip after Iowa State coach Steve Prohm was hit with a technical foul.

Baylor (13-10, 3-7 Big 12 Conference) led 51-38 at that point and the Cyclones never got closer than eight the rest of the way. Donovan Jackson had 15 points to lead Iowa State (12-10, 3-7). Cameron Lard and Lindell Wigginton scored 14 points apiece. All of Wigginton’s came in the first half, and he led the Cyclones with eight assists.

Iowa State was 9 for 20 from 3-point range (45 percent), but shot 34 percent overall. The Cyclones fell to 0-5 on the road in the Big 12, thanks in large part to inconsistency. Jackson only had two points in the first half before finding his shot in the second, while Wigginton was 0 for 7 after halftime.

Iowa State finishes a two-game road trip on Wednesday when it meets No. 10 Texas Tech, which is tied for first in the Big 12.
