No. 14 Ohio State drops Iowa 82-64, takes Big Ten lead

Sports

February 11th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Keita Bates-Diop had 14 points and eight rebounds, and No. 14 Ohio State beat Iowa 82-64 on Saturday for sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. Kaleb Wesson added 18 points and C.J Jackson scored 14 for the Buckeyes (21-5, 13-1 Big Ten), who were 9 for 20 from 3-point range. Leading scorer Tyler Cook had just eight points for the Hawkeyes (12-15, 3-11).

The Buckeyes are a full game ahead of No. 3 Purdue and No. 4 Michigan State in the Big Ten standings and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over both teams. The Buckeyes do not play either team in their four remaining games.

The Hawkeyes have lost three straight games and sit two games behind 10th place in the Big Ten, meaning they would be one of four teams to play on the first day of the conference tournament. Iowa plays at No. 20 Michigan, on Wednesday.

Jensen’s 35 lifts No. 22 Oklahoma St over Iowa St 81-73

Sports

February 11th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kaylee Jensen scored 16 straight points in the fourth quarter for Oklahoma State and finished with a career-high 35 and the No. 22 Cowgirls held on to defeat Iowa State 81-73 on Saturday night after giving up a 26-point lead.

Jensen steadied Oklahoma State (18-6, 9-4 Big 12) after Iowa State (10-14, 4-9) cut a 26-point deficit late in the second quarter to two points with a 30-12 third quarter. Jensen went 5 of 6 from the floor and 6 of 6 from the foul line.

Despite Jensen, the Hawkeyes were within 76-73 after Bridget Carleton’s jumper with 46 seconds left. Then Rae Johnson blocked a shot by OSU’s Loryn Goodwin out of bounds with 19.3 seconds left. With just a tick on the shot clock, Braxtin Miller received the inbounds pass and hit a 3-pointer, which was ruled in time after a lengthy video review. ISU then turned the ball over and the Cowgirls added two more free throws.

The Cyclones tied the school record with 30 points, helped by six 3-pointers, in the third quarter. The record was established when they won 78-69 at Oklahoma State last month. Jensen finished 12 of 18 from the field, 11 of 14 from the line and had 12 rebounds. Goodwin had 23 points and Miller 11.

Madison Wise had a career-high 21 for Iowa State and Emily Durr had 19.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A woman accused of leaving her children home alone, including one child covered in feces, has pleaded guilty to one of the charges against her as part of a deal with prosecutors. The Des Moines Register reports that 26-year-old Destinee Miller, of Des Moines, appeared Thursday in Polk County District Court and pleaded guilty to neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. She faces up to 10 years in prison when she’s sentenced March 26.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A Lake City farmer has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for committing fraud to get bank loans, crop insurance proceeds and ease a bankruptcy burden. Federal prosecutors say 36-year-old Clint Devries was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty in September to two counts of making false statements and one count of bankruptcy fraud.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa mother accused of leaving her four children home alone while traveled to Germany could avoid a prison sentence. The Des Moines Register reports that prosecutors have offered to drop a gun charge against 31-year-old Erin Macke and give her a deferred judgment if she pleads guilty to four counts of child endangerment. Macke is currently charged with the four counts plus one count of making a firearm available to a person under 21. Police say she left four kids all 12 and under alone.

KENSETT, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa State Patrol says one person was killed and two were injured, including a sheriff’s deputy, in separate crashes on Interstate 35 in north-central Iowa. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that the crashes both happened Friday night on the same stretch of the southbound lanes of the interstate near Kensett. A semitrailer driver was injured when his rig hit a bridge support. Later, a driver rear-ended a sheriff deputy’s SUV at the crash site. That driver died, and the deputy was hurt.

Trojans girls basketball ends season with loss to Red Oak

Sports

February 10th, 2018 by admin

The Red Oak Tigers pressured their way to a girls Class 3A Region 8 Quarterfinal win over Atlantic 59-23 on Saturday night. The Tigers used stifling pressure defense to blow the game open early and raced out to a 21-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. Taking care of the ball was a big issue for the Trojans through much of the game. The Tigers forced 26 Atlantic turnovers and scored 22 points off of those miscues.

Red Oak led 34-6 at halftime and had a 47-15 advantage by the end of the third. The Tigers got 19 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals from sophomore Sophie Walker. Sierra Athen also finished in double figures with 10 points and 6 rebounds.  The Tigers improved to 19-2 and will move on to host Shenandoah in the Region 8 Semifinals on Wednesday, February 14th.

The Trojans got 6 points from McKenzie Waters and Cheyenne Elliott had 4 points and 7 rebounds in her final game. Atlantic finishes the season at 3-17.
