PAUL LYDON, 69, of Guthrie Center, died Wed. Feb. 14th, at home. Funeral services for PAUL LYDON will be held 10-a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20th, at the 1st United Methodist Church in Guthrie Center. Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home, on Monday, Feb. 19th, from 5-until 7-p.m.

Burial will be in the Dalmanutha Cemetery, in rural Guthrie Center. (Dal-man-eww-thuh) [

His wife – Jo Lydon.

His daughters – Karmin (Chad) Klingenberg; Paula (David) Sheeder.

Creston man cited after car hits utility pole, Thursday

Police in Creston say 41-year old Timothy Allen Hansen, of Creston, was cited for Fraudulent use of registration, failure to provide proof of insurance and careless driving, Thursday, after his car struck a utility pole. Hansen was traveling too fast southbound on Jarvis Street in Creston at around 4:45-p.m., when his 2003 Nissan 350Z went out of control. Hansen tried to regain control, but the car continued out of control before hitting an Alliant Energy utility pole at the corner of N. Jarvis and Summit Street.

The impact caused the pole to break in-half. Alliant crews were called to the scene, due to the fact a power line was down. Neither Hansen, nor his female passenger in the car, were hurt. Damage from the collision amounted to $6,200 altogether.

ROGER R. FOWBLE, 69, of Brayton (Memorial Svcs. 2/17/18)

ROGER R. FOWBLE, 69, of Brayton, died Wed., Feb 14th, at Bergan-Mercy Hospital in Omaha. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for ROGER FOWBLE will be held 2-p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17th, at the Kessler Funeral Home, in Exira.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family will be present 5-p.m. today (Friday, Feb. 16th).

Burial will be in the Oakfield Cemetery, east of Brayton.

Iowa early News Headlines: Friday, 2/16/18

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Iowa say they’re not advancing a bill that would have reduced gun permit requirements in the state in part because of a deadly school shooting in Florida. The Senate judiciary committee agreed Thursday not to vote on a bill that would have repealed a requirement in Iowa to have a permit to acquire a weapon. It also would have made it voluntary to have a permit to carry a weapon.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A southeastern Iowa man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for soliciting nude photos from an 11-year-old girl, as well as possessing other child pornography. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that 45-year-old Joel Allen Corder, of Mount Pleasant, was sentenced Wednesday and ordered to register as a sex offender. Prosecutors say a tip led police to Corder in 2016, when investigators seized his cellphone and found 638 images of child pornography on it.

FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) — A southeastern Iowa woman faces up to 11 years in prison after being charged in a single-vehicle crash that killed her husband. The Hawk Eye reports that 26-year-old Noelle Diane Cosby, of Donnellson, was charged Wednesday with vehicular homicide while operating under the influence and first-offense OWI for the Dec. 10 crash that killed 35-year-old Todd “Bubba” Cosby.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A monthly survey of rural bankers in 10 Plains and Western states suggests an improved economic outlook. A report released Thursday says the Rural Mainstreet Index rose to its highest reading since May 2014, reaching 54.8 in February. Survey organizers say any score below 50 suggests a shrinking economy in the months ahead.

“Constitutional carry” gun bill shelved in Iowa Senate

A bill that would have done away with the requirement that Iowans get a permit to carry a concealed weapon has been shelved in the Iowa Senate. It happened about 24 hours after the mass shooting at a Florida high school. Senator Brad Zaun says he pulled the bill from committee consideration Thursday after a colleague told him Governor Kim Reynolds was opposed to it.

“It makes me sick what happened down in Florida, but with that said, I did have the votes to move this thing forward and decided after the communication from the governor…to pull it off the agenda,” Zaun says.

The bill would NOT have removed requirements that those who buy a gun go through a background check, but it would have done away from the state law that requires those who wish to carry a concealed weapon to obtain a permit from their county sheriff’s office.

“I thought it was a very logical, first step based on our constitution. There was definitely safeguards in place that people that should not have guns would not be able to get guns,” Zaun says. “I’m very disappointed.”

Legislators set yesterday (Thursday) as a deadline for policy bills to advance out of a committee. Bills, like this one, that failed to do so are no longer eligible for debate this year. However, proposals are sometimes added to other legislation brought up for debate.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright says he isn’t thinking about retirement. He also isn’t pondering a contract extension. The 36-year-old former Cardinals ace help an impromptu news conference to talk about what he does not want to talk about. Wainwright is in the final season of a five-year contract. He says his sole focus is performing at his best this season. That was not the case last season and Wainwright acknowledged it became a problem.

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Jesse Hahn has changed uniforms and spring training sites in the past three weeks, but his goal remains the same: to break camp as a starting pitcher. Hahn was working out last month at Oakland’s complex in Mesa, and then was traded to Kansas City on Jan. 29 in a deal that sent Brandon Moss to the Athletics. Hahn went 3-6 with a 5.30 ERA in 14 games with the A’s. He spent time on the disabled list. He has taken a proactive approach with the Royals’ training staff to stay on the mound.

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL has named five sites as finalists to host the NFL draft in 2019 and 2020. The finalists to host either the 2019 or 2020 draft include Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegas and Nashville, plus a combined entry of Cleveland and Canton, Ohio. The NFL will announce final selections in May during the league’s spring meetings in Atlanta.

Griswold fights tough early, sputters in second half against Stanton

The Griswold Tigers fought tough early but sputtered in the second half in a season-ending loss at Stanton 66-34 on Thursday night. The Tigers held close in the first quarter with Morgan Mundorf dropping in 6 first quarter points. The Tigers trailed 14-8 at the end of the first and Stanton’s lead would grow to 31-16 by half. The Vikings then blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Griswold 25-10 in the period to build a 30 point lead.

Stanton got 18 points from Dillion Rocha, Drake Johnson had 14 points and 8 rebounds, and Donnie Weis added 16. The Vikings avenged their only loss of the season that came at the hands of the Tigers in mid December. The Vikings improved to 20-1 with the win and they will move on to face CAM in the District Semifinals on Tuesday at 6:30pm at St. Albert High School.

Griswold was led by 14 points from Morgan Mundorf. The Senior finished with 620 points for his career with the Tigers. Griswold finishes the season at 2-20.

CAM pulls away from East Mills to pick up District win

The CAM Cougars overcame a shaky start to put away the East Mills Wolverines 62-41 on Thursday night in Stanton. The Cougars picked up the District 14 Quarterfinal win behind 21 points and 9 rebounds from Thomas Hensley. Nic Holste poured in 15 points and had 7 rebounds.

Both teams started the game a little shaky with mental errors and plenty of turnovers early on. The Cougars were able to settle in to the game in the second quarter and led 38-16 at halftime, The margin would stay right around 20 points the rest of the game.

East Mills was led by 13 points from Dylan Schroeder and 10 from Michael Schafer. Their season comes to an end with a 10-12 record.

CAM improved to 16-5 on the year and will move on to face Stanton in the District Semifinals next Tuesday night at 6:30pm at St. Albert High School. We’ll have coverage of that game on KJAN.
