Salmonella-tainted Fareway chicken salad sickens 28 Iowans

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Public health officials say 28 people in Iowa have been sickened by chicken salad sold at Fareway grocery stores and another 66 illnesses are probably linked to the product.

The Iowa Department of Public Health is advising consumers to throw away any chicken salad bought at Fareway produced between Dec. 15 and Feb. 13 and sold in plastic deli containers with a Fareway store deli label.

The chicken salad was produced and packaged by a third party for the Boone, Iowa-based grocery chain that has more than 100 stores in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota.

Fareway voluntarily stopped selling the product on Feb. 2.
Salmonella, a bacterial illness, can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Some people develop severe symptoms that require hospitalization.

ANNA MAE COURCIER, 96, of Griswold died Friday, February 16th at the Griswold Care Center. Graveside services for ANNA MAE COURCIER will be held Monday, Feburary 19th at 11:00am in the Noble Center Cemetery. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be held Sunday, February 18th from 1:00pm-3:00pm at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

INEZ REIFF, 92, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, died Friday, February 16th, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fontanelle. Funeral services for INEZ REIFF will be held 2-p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22nd, at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield.

The family will greet friends one-hour prior to the service, Thursday, at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Burial will be in the Antlers City Cemetery, in Antlers City, OK., on Friday, March 2nd at 3-p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the Inez Reiff Memorial Fund, to be established by the family at a later date.

Her step-son: Duane (Linda) Reiff, of Omaha.

Her step-daughter: Bonnie R. Reiff, of San Diego, CA.

3 arrested in Cass County for Probation Violation

Three people were arrested Thursday in Cass County, on District Court warrants for Probation Violation. Those who were taken into custody include: 23-year old Samantha Kim Jensen, of Atlantic; 33-year old Ehren Michael Mardesen, and 33-year old Miles Blake Cooley, both of Anita. Cooley was also arrested for Possession of Marijuana, 3rd or subsequent offense. He was later released from the Cass County Jail on $2,000 bond. Jensen and Mardesen remain in the Cass County Jail, held on $25,000 bond, each.

Man accused of head-butting 2-year-old son as discipline

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have arrested a southeast Iowa man accused of head-butting his son to discipline the 2-year-old. Court records say 21-year-old Zachary Fritsch, of Washington, is charged with child endangerment causing injury and assault causing injury. Des Moines County Jail records say he remained in custody Friday. A court document says Fritsch, the boy and the boy’s mother were visiting a West Burlington residence when the child was injured. His mother and another woman took him to a medical center, where workers notified police about the possible abuse victim.

The woman with the boy’s mother told investigators that Fritsch head-butted the boy’s forehead after yelling at him for playing with a bottle and pacifier that didn’t belong to him.

Exira-EHK and CAM square off in Regional Semifinal tonight on KJAN

The Exira-EHK Spartans will play host to the CAM Cougars in a Class 1A Region 7 Semifinal tonight in Elk Horn and we’ll have it on KJAN. This will be the third meeting between the squads this year with the Spartans prevailing in the first two. Exira-EHK won 63-53 at home on December 15th in the first meeting, a game that was much closer than the final score. The Cougars had a two point lead heading into the fourth quarter of that first game, but the Spartans outscored them 19-7 in the fourth quarter to pull off the win. The second meeting was won a little more handily by the Spartans on January 23rd 66-45. The Spartans led by 10 at half in that game and blew it open with a 24-6 third quarter advantage.

Both teams had to win to advance to this semifinal. The Cougars won a first round game over Griswold 40-36 and followed that with a quarterfinal win over Stanton 76-42. The Spartans were 77-23 winners over Riverside in their quarterfinal round game.

The winner will advance to the Regional Final against the winner of the Boyer Valley vs. Fremont-Mills game. That final will be played on Monday in Avoca at 7:00pm.
