It could be a slippery start to the Monday morning commute in parts of Iowa

News, Weather

March 25th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Winter just doesn’t seem to want to leave the state. The National Weather Service in Des Moines says another round of winter precipitation (this time in the form of freezing rain) is forecast late tonight into Monday morning over portions of Iowa. Expect a wintry mix late tonight over western Iowa and then to spread east northeast by sunrise Monday morning, affecting the morning commute. The freezing rain is likely to end by the late morning as surface temperatures rise above freezing. Ice accumulation amounts should be a light glaze in the central to southeast to a tenth to near 0.15 inches over the northwest quarter of the State.

The icy conditions are expected to impact mainly elevated surfaces such as tree limbs and powerlines. However, any untreated roads, sidewalks, and other outdoor surfaces will become ice-covered and slippery. There is a potential to cause some tricky travel during the Monday morning commute, especially over northwest Iowa. If you live in the potentially impacted area, be prepared for increased travel times Monday morning and travel with extra caution.

March 25th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

Crews with the Atlantic Fire Department along with the Cass County Sheriff’s Deputies, responded to a report at around 3:25-a.m., of semi tractor-trailer fire. The semi was located at the westbound Interstate 80 Exit ramp.

For a time, it wasn’t clear what the semi was hauling, only that it was  Hazardous Materials. There were concerns that it might be hauling sulfuric acid, but it turns out (according to an official at the fire department), that the trailer contained commercial goods that were considered to be hazardous.

The fire started on a rear tire of the trailer, but the driver of the rig was able to extinguish the flames prior to the arrival of Atlantic Fire crews. No injuries were reported.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Malik Newman certainly did not envision the magnificent postseason he’s been enjoying back in December and January when he was struggling. Even before that, there was the injury-plagued freshman year at Mississippi State, the entering and pulling out of the NBA draft and finally the transfer to Kansas. He’s the Jayhawks’ leading tournament scorer with 18.3 points per game.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — No. 1 Kansas and No. 2 Duke will square off in the Midwest final on Sunday for the last spot in the Final Four _ and the stakes are huge even by Elite Eight standards. Mike Krzyzewski is looking to break UCLA legend John Wooden’s record of 12 Final Four appearances. Kansas coach Bill Self, who recently joined Krzyzewski and Wooden in the Naismith Hall of Fame, is hoping to snap a two-year losing streak in regional finals and a 2-7 personal record in Elite Eights.

ATLANTA (AP) — No. 11 seed Loyola is headed to the Final Four after beating No. 9 seed Kansas State 78-62 in the South Regional final. After three close calls in the NCAA Tournament, the Ramblers shot 57 percent and romped to a win over the defensive-minded Wildcats. So now it’s on to San Antonio for the team that has become a national phenomenon with its 98-year-old team chaplain, Sister Jean.

UNDATED (AP) — Top seeds to determine final spots in Final Four following rash of upsets on left side of the bracket. No. 1 Kansas faces No. 2 Duke in the Midwest, No. 1 Villanova against No. 3 Texas Tech in the East.

UNDATED (AP) — In an NCAA Tournament dominated by upsets, Friday belonged to the favorites. Top seeds Kansas and Villanova, along with second-seeded Duke all moved on to the Elite Eight after holding on for close wins. All three teams are on the right side of the tourney bracket. Joined by Texas Tech, the foursome alone would make for intriguing Final Four. That makes any team that emerges from Sunday a likely top contender for the national title.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kansas City Royals pitcher Danny Duffy made an early exit in his final spring tuneup because of shoulder tightness, but said he’s certain he will be OK to pitch on opening day. Duffy is scheduled to start the opener for the second straight year, facing the Chicago White Sox at home on Thursday. The lefty came out of the game against an Arizona split squad with a trainer in the third inning.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s governor has announced that she’s fired the director of the Iowa Finance Authority over a sexual harassment complaint. Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Saturday in a news release that Dave Jamison has been fired, effective immediately. The written release says Reynolds’ office was made aware Friday night of “credible allegations of sexual harassment against Director Jamison.” Reynolds has named IFA Chief Programs Officer Carolann Jensen as interim director.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican authorities say autopsies indicate an Iowa couple and their two children died from inhaling toxic gas at a rented condo on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, but there was no sign of foul play or suicide. The prosecutors’ office in the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo said Saturday that the type of gas and its source had not yet been identified. Photos released by the office showed investigators in anti-contamination suits examining gas connections to a stove in the condo in Tulum.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The family of a Des Moines police officer killed in a 2016 wrong-way crash is blaming the design of an interstate interchange in a new lawsuit. The Des Moines Register reports that the family of Officer Susan Farrell is suing the cities of Waukee and West Des Moines, as well as several contractors. The lawsuit says the cities and contractors were negligent in opening the Interstate 80 interchange west of Des Moines before basic safety features were finished.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Downtown Des Moines is anticipating an unprecedented wave of hotel construction, including a 330-room Hilton that opened this week. The Des Moines Register reports that the city expects a surge of 951 hotel rooms in the next few years, which is a nearly 50 percent increase from the rooms currently available. Des Moines didn’t add any new downtown hotel rooms between the opening of Des Lux Hotel in 2000 and the Hyatt Place in 2010. A city official says this is Des Moines’ “catch-up phase.”
