The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an attempted burglary which occurred sometime Friday or Saturday at the Anita Laundromat and Car wash. Officials say a person or persons unknown entered the outer door of the business and attempted to pry the interior door open as well as the dollar bill change machine, causing about $1300 in damages. A similar attempt at the same business on January 22nd or 23rd caused  about $300 damage.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports an Anita woman was arrested last Wednesday on a warrant for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident.  24-year old Sydney Kay Darling was taken to the Cass County Jail where she was released the following day on $300 cash bond. The following day, 36-year old Eric Jason Ostrander, of Atlantic, was arrested on a Cass County warrant for Possession with Intent to Deliver Methamphetamine. Ostrander was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance.

On Saturday, 27-year old Tanner Paul Preston, of Atlantic, was arrested by Cass County deputies on a charge of OWI 1st Offense. Preston was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance. And, 31-year old  Zachary Alan Frank, of Atlantic, was arrested Saturday on a charge of Driving While Barred. Frank was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance.

The Audubon County Sheriff’s Dept. reports the arrest early Sunday morning of a Shelby County man. Officials say 38-year old Kyle Christopher Archibald, of Earling, was arrested at around 1:30-a.m. Sunday, on charges of OWI/2nd offense, and Failure to hold a driver’s license.

The charges stem from a traffic stop on Highway 71 near the intersection with Highway 44. Archibald was brought to the Audubon County Jail and later released after appearing before a magistrate. His preliminary hearing was set for Feb. 27th.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office has released a report on their most recent arrests. Authorities say last Friday, 38-year old William Paul Fuller, of Shenandoah, was arrested for a probation violation. On Thursday, 23-year old Nicholas Allen Gould, of Riverton, was arrested for Contempt of Court. That same day, 32-year old Lacey Nichole Remmen, of Hamburg, was arrested for 1st offense OWI.

On Tuesday, deputies with the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27-year old Isaac Calvin Hayes, of Hamburg, for a probation violation, and on Monday (Feb. 3rd), 58-year old Allen Kent Iverson, of Tabor, was arrested for 5th Degree Theft.

Authorities in Montgomery County say a Clarinda man was arrested Sunday night on drug and moving violation charges. 37-year old Joshua Joel Moses was arrested at around 11-p.m. for Driving While Revoked, and Possession of Marijuana. Moses was booked into the Montgomery County Jail and held on a $1,000 cash bond.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Expanding access to publicly funded preschool in Iowa is a top priority for Democrats in the legislature this year, but it’s not clear Republican Governor Terry Branstad or Republican lawmakers are on board with the idea. Senator Herman Quirmbach, a Democrat from Ames, says he has been working on legislation to expand the Iowa Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An illness among cats has forced a pet adoption center in Iowa City to stop feline adoptions until staffers can resolve the problem. KWWL-TV reports the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center has halted visits to its cat room until at least later today as workers deal with several sick cats.

OYENS, Iowa (AP) — A northwest Iowa town is losing its ambulance service because of a lack of volunteers. KTIV reports Oyens is going to have to rely on the nearby towns of Le Mars and Remsen to provide ambulance service. But that will likely mean slower responses to emergencies.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Khristian Smith scored 19 points, including a dunk and free throw to give Indiana State a five-point lead with 1:13 left, as the Sycamores held on to beat Drake 60-56 on Sunday. Drake’s Karl Madison made a layup with 58 seconds left to pull the Bulldogs within three and had a chance to tie the game at 59 with 5 seconds left, but Aaron Hawley’s shot was off the mark.

The death of a 13-year-old boy in a snowmobile accident in northwest Iowa is bringing attention to off-road vehicle safety. The teenager, Raymond Gatzemeyer of Fonda, died last Wednesday when he hit a rope suspended between the pillars of a bridge. David Downing, with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says such dangers are common when crossing someone’s property. “Often during the year those landowners make changes to the property, they may put up a cable between a gate, they may have a suspension wire coming down off a corner post, and those types of hazards are unmarked,” Downing says.

There are plenty of places to ride in Iowa that are safe, according to Downing. “We have more than 8,000 miles of designated snowmobile trails in the state,” Downing says, “and those trails are groomed and they’re marked so you know where the hazards are. That’s why we always recommend that folks stay on those trails.” At the time of the accident, Gatzemeyer was with three other people, two who were on snowmobiles and one who was operating an ATV. They were not injured. It’s unclear why there was a rope attached to the bridge pillars. Gatzemeyer was wearing a helmet. Downing made his comments on Iowa Public Radio’s “River to River” program.

Oyens Ambulance Director Dan Cronin says it’s hard to attract new volunteers. There aren’t many people willing to commit the time needed to become certified.

Cronin says he hopes to assemble a group of volunteers later this year who are willing to serve as first responders in medical emergencies. Those people could help stabilize patients until an ambulance arrives.
