Road construction work for the expansion of U.S. 20 in Ida and Sac counties will require closing the roadway to traffic between Ida County Road M-25 (near Galva) and U.S. 71 (near Early) from noon Monday, Apr. 23, until Friday, Sept. 28, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s District 3 Office. Motorists will be directed around the work zone on a signed detour using Ida County Road M-25, Ida/Sac County Road D-15, and U.S. 71.

WINTERSET, Iowa (AP) — Two people have been given probation for setting fire to a historic Madison County covered bridge featured on the cover of the novel “The Bridges of Madison County.”
Court records say 19-year-old Joel Davis and 20-year-old Alivia Bergmann were sentenced Monday to five years of probation and given deferred judgments. Both had pleaded guilty to arson charges stemming from the fire last April.
Under deferred judgments, the convictions can be wiped from their records if the two successfully complete their probation terms. A third person, Alexander Hoff also has pleaded guilty. He’s scheduled to be sentenced Monday. The bridge near Winterset also was featured in the 1995 movie adaptation of “The Bridges of Madison County.”
The Iowa Pork Producers begin their 16th annual search for Iowa’s Best Tenderloin Wednesday. Pork Producers spokesman, Ron Birkenholz says the tenderloin is an item many restaurants across the state have on the menu. “We’re hoping for another good turnout — we had over three-thousand nominations last year with 271 different establishments named in the contest,” Birkenholz says. “We know there’s a lot of good tenderloins out there and we hope people will nominate them,” Birkenholz says.
Nominations for the best tenderloin can be submitted at the I-P-P website www.iowapork.org Birkenholz said the deadline for all entries is June 5th. He says the contest generates good publicity for the eateries. “It’s good for the business, all of the past winners have told us that their business has increased exponentially after wining the contest. Even the runners up — we name a top five — and even those restaurants see a major increase in their business,” according to Birkenholz.
2017’s Best Pork Tenderloin in Iowa was from the Grid Iron Grill in Webster City.
The winning tenderloin is announced during “Pork Month” in October. It’s something he says the creators of the tenderloins anxiously await. “It puts them on the tenderloin map if you will,” Birkenholz says, “we have people all over the midwest that follow this contest and love tenderloins and want to go to the winner’s restaurant and try it. So, it’s a great deal for the entire industry.” Last year’s winning restaurant was the “Grid Iron Grill” in Webster City.

DELORES ‘DEE’ HANKE, 86, of Atlantic, died Monday, April 16th, at the Heritage House in Atlantic. A Celebration of Life service for DEE HANKE will be held 2-p.m. Saturday, April 28th, at First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. Roland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Burial will be in the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery, at a later date.
The family encourages memorials be given in Dee’s name to the Ann W. Wickman Child Development Center, or to a starving artist, in honor of her love of the arts.

CHICAGO (AP) — The series opener between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals was postponed because of poor weather, Monday. With light snow falling and the temperature around 30 degrees, the game was postponed about six hours before the scheduled first pitch. It will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on July 21.
TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays have postponed their series opener against Kansas City because of chunks of ice crashing down from the nearby CN Tower following a weekend of freezing rain. The teams will play a doubleheader on Tuesday. It’s the first postponement at Rogers Centre since a game against the Royals was called off following a collision between two panels of the stadium’s moving roof on April 12, 2001.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A trial has been scheduled for an Iowa youth basketball coach who’s accused of secretly recording some of his players undressing. Federal court records say 42-year-old Greg Stephen has pleaded not guilty to knowingly transporting child pornography. His trial is scheduled to begin June 4.
The NAIA Council of Presidents has voted to merge divisions for men’s and women’s basketball beginning in 2020. The NAIA has offered championships in division one and division two since 1992. Corey Westra is Commissioner of the Great Plains Athletic Conference which competes at the division two level.
The GPAC has enjoyed a run of success, especially in women’s basketball.
It also brings about a change in scholarships. Currently, division one teams may offer 11 scholarships in basketball and six for division two.
Basketball was the lone remaining sport in the NAIA offering multiple divisions. Football made a similar move two decades ago.
Westra says the plan is for 64-team tournament for the men and women. Graceland won the NAIA men’s division one tournament this past season.

President Trump said last week he would support lifting restrictions on ethanol sales, a move that could provide a boost to Iowa corn growers. There are still questions, however, if that waiver to allow E15 to be sold year-round will require Congressional action. Lynn Chrisp (of Hastings, Nebraska) is first vice-president of the National Corn Growers Association’s Corn Board. He says the N-C-G-A believes the Environmental Protection Agency has the authority to make that change. “We have taken a stand for a long time that this can be an administrative fix, as far as extending the waivers to E15 and blends above that,” Chrisp said.
The E-P-A currently bans the sale of E15 during the summer. At the same time, N-C-G-A continues to call on the E-P-A to stop giving RIN hardship exemptions to oil refiners. “It has a real negative effect on the RFS (Renewable Fuels Standard), to the point that it’s going to reduce the obligation by as much as a billion gallons – which is just something that cannot happen,” Chrisp said.
It looks like the E15 and RIN issues could get tied up in the courts for some time. According to Chrisp, the N-C-G-A is “up for that fight.” Trump’s comments about ethanol came in a meeting last Thursday at the White House. The meeting included Senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.

Adair County Sheriffs Jeff Vandewater reports a man was arrested April 8th on drug charges, during a traffic stop on Interstate 80, about a mile west of Casey. 54-year old Ronald Gene Emgarten, of Casey, was a passenger in an SUV that was pulled over for a traffic infraction. The driver was cited, but Emgarten, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was taken into custody for Possession of a Controlled Substance – Methamphetamine/3rd or subsequent offense. During an inventory search of the vehicle, a bag of meth and two smoking devices were found in the air vents on the passenger side. Emgarten was transported to the Adair County Jail, where his cash or surety bond was set at $5,000. He was released two-days later, but arrested again Aprl 14th on an outstanding warrant out of Guthrie County. Emgarten was transferred to the authority of Guthrie County Deputies.
33-year old Steven William Thompson, of Woodbine, was arrested April 13th by a DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement Officer, after a straight truck he was driving was pulled over in Stuart. Thompson was taken into custody for Driving While License Denied or Revoked/OWI-related. He was also given warnings for five equipment violations. Thompson was released the next day on a $1,000 cash or surety bond.
Sheriff Vandewater reports also, three people were cited last week for Driving Under Suspension, in Adair County. They were cited for the offense and released.
