Hawkeyes snap Wolverines’ 20-Game winning streak

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team got a dominant outing from junior Nick Allgeyer to post a 4-2 victory over seventh-ranked Michigan, snapping the Wolverines’ 20-game winning streak in front of a season-high 1,632 fans Friday night at Duane Banks Field.

Allgeyer (5-3) went seven strong innings to earn his fifth victory and notch his 10th straight quality start. The southpaw scattered five hits, allowed one earned run, and tied a career-high with eight strikeouts.

“It was good to get back out there with warm weather,” said Allgeyer. “The fans were awesome today and they gave everyone a lot of energy. There was a little extra motivation with their 20-game win streak, but I just tried to not get too hyped up and at the end of the day you just have to get the job done.”

Iowa’s offense got going in the third inning when senior Matt Hoeg reached off a fielding error by Michigan third baseman Blake Nelson before advancing to second off a wild pitch. After a Chris Whelan fly out to right field moved Chris Whelan to third, junior Tanner Wetrich laced a first-pitch single to center field, giving Iowa a 1-0 lead.

The Hawkeyes pushed their lead to 4-0 lead with a three-run third inning.  Sophomore Lorenzo Elion started with a one-out single to left field before scoring on a double from sophomore Kyle Crowl. Hoeg followed with an RBI triple to center field to make the score 3-0 and junior Mitchell Boe’s RBI single stretched the lead to 4-0.

Michigan put two runs on the board, one in the fifth, off a two-out RBI single from Christian Bullock and another in the eighth on a Jesse Franklin sacrifice fly.  Iowa reliever Zach Daniels retired the Wolverines in order in the ninth for his fourth save.

Tommy Henry (7-1) suffered the loss on the mound for the Wolverines. The sophomore allowed four runs off seven hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched for his shortest outing this season.

UP NEXT
Game two of the series will begin at 2:05 p.m. (CT) Saturday at Banks Field.  Junior Brady Schanuel will take the hill for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa agriculture secretary offers spring cover crop tips

Ag/Outdoor

April 28th, 2018 by admin

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s agriculture secretary is offering spring management tips for farmers using cover crops.

Cover crops are used to reduce erosion, protect water quality and improve soil health until row crops like corn and soybeans are planted in the spring.

State Ag Secretary Mike Naig says late winter conditions are causing challenges this spring to cover crops planted last fall. Naig says it’s important to allow the cover crop to grow as long as possible to maximize the benefits. He says that is typically easier for soybeans after winter cover crops because of the later planting date and less potential impact on soybeans.

More information and tips on cover crops in Iowa can be found online at www.cleanwateriowa.org/cover-crops , www.extension.iastate.edu/ilf/content/cover-crop-resources or www.practicalfarmers.org/member-priorities/cover-crops/ .

Marte’s 11th-inning single rallies Pirates over Cardinals

Sports

April 28th, 2018 by admin

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals seemingly had this game won.

They led 5-0 after five innings and Miles Mikolas was on his way to raising his record to 4-0. Then it all fell apart as Greg Holland blew his first save opportunity with his new team.

Starling Marte’s game-ending single in the 11th inning lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-5 victory on Friday night.

David Freese drew a one-out walk from rookie Jordan Hicks (1-1), advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on Gregory Polanco’s groundout. Marte then delivered a liner into center field, giving the Pirates their third victory in four games.

UP NEXT

St. Louis will recall RHP Jack Flaherty (0-0, 1.80 ERA) from Memphis to start Saturday night against RHP Trevor Williams (3-1, 2.15). Flaherty pitched for the Cardinals on April 3 at Milwaukee and allowed one run in five innings of a no-decision. Williams is 1-2 with an 8.15 ERA against the Cardinals in six career games.
