(Radio Iowa) – Summer’s here and Iowans are hitting the beaches. Dan Kendall, senior environmental specialist with the Iowa D-N-R, says there’s a whole crew of people who are spending the season testing the water quality in our many lakes, some 246 of them. “No swimming” advisories have already been issued for a few locations in the state, but Kendall says that’s not unusual for this time of year. He says it’s a snap to find the latest beach and lake condition reports on the agency’s website, Iowa-D-N-R-dot-gov (Iowadnr.gov).

Just type in “beach” in the window and it will take you to an alphabetized list of all beaches statewide and a wealth of data about the water quality of each one. Those reports are issued every Friday throughout the summer.

(Radio Iowa via KCRG-TV) – Willard Miller, of Fairfield, was sentenced to life with a chance for parole after 35 years Thursday for the killing of his Spanish teacher Nohema Graber in November of 2021. Miller had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and the sentence came after a hearing on the events leading up to the murder that showed he wanted to kill Graber because he was failing her Spanish class. Miller made a statement before his sentencing. “I would like to apologize for my actions first and foremost, to the family. I’m truly sorry for the distress that I caused you and the devastation I caused your family,” he says. He also apologized to the community, police and his church.

“Coming here today, now at the end of this stretched out journey, I’m realizing just the magnitude of my actions. And I know it was wrong and I knew it was wrong, I’m yet I still carried through, I still did what I did,” Millers says. Nohema Graber’s borther-in-law Tom was one of several people to give victim impact statements.

This case has had an enormous impact on Nohema’s family, Fairfield High School and the Fairfield community at large,” he says. “Not only was no amo robbed of 30 some of the best years of her life. Her murder deprived Paul Graber of the love of his life, and certainly hasten Paul’s own premature death.” He says Paul had just endured more than five years of dialysis and received a kidney transplant and was looking forward to resuming in travel with his wife.

“Paul was deeply and understandably depressed by the murder of Nohema — and his life ended last week in the ravages of a metastatic cancer that would have been caught and treated far sooner had Nohema been there,” he says. Miller is now almost 18, but was 16 years old at the time of the killing, and state law requires that juveniles be given a chance for parole.

Jeremey Goodale also pleaded guilty and his sentencing hearing will be in August.

(Radio Iowa) – Governor Kim Reynolds and the wife of Florida’s governor shared the stage last (Thursday) night at a “Mamas for DeSantis” event for Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign. Casey DeSantis called Iowa’s new state-funded Education Savings Accounts a game changer.

“Yay!” Reynolds yelled and, as the crowd cheered, DeSantis called it “a big deal.” In March, Governor Ron DeSantis expanded Florida’s law, eventually making about 85-hundred dollars in state money available for every student to cover the costs of private school or home schooling.

Governor Reynolds announced yesterday that Iowa parents had applied for state-funded accounts to cover private school costs for 29-thousand children.  “We were processing one application every 12 seconds in the first several days of opening up. We did it in a month,” Reynolds said. “We had projected about 14,500 and we’re over 17,500 right now.” Sixty percent of the 17-thousand-500 approved applications Reynolds mentioned are for students already enrolled in a private school.

Parents who filed the other applications need to submit more paperwork to show they meet the income guidelines to qualify. Reynolds also asked DeSantis about a welfare reform initiative called “Hope Florida” that has state agencies connect welfare recipients with resources available from religious groups, non-profits and the private sector.  “It’s just something that I want to bring to Iowa that I’m really impressed with,” Reynolds said. “…The partnership between the faith community, the private sector and government and what you’ve been able to do with that I think is really phenomenal and this has kind of been your deal.”

DeSantis says there are plenty of private citizens who’re willing to help meet the needs of people who qualify for government assistance. “This is a conversation that we need to be having about the proper role of government. What is government doing?” DeSantis asked and Reynolds said: “Amen.” DeSantis continued: “Since the ‘Great Society,’ how much money have we spent? Trillions of dollars. And where’s the return on our investment and how are we helping good people who are in need? Let’s look at a philosophical, different approach to government. Let’s change the structure of it.”

Neither DeSantis nor Reynolds mentioned next week’s special legislative session that Reynolds has called to pass new abortion restrictions. DeSantis ended the event by invited the crowd to join “Mamas for DeSantis.” She launched a similar group in Florida about five months before her husband won reelection as Florida’s governor by a nearly 20 point margin.

(Radio Iowa) – Fort Dodge Police have arrested the man wanted in the 4th of July murder of a Fort Dodge teenager. According to Fort Dodge Police Chief Dennis Quinn, 18 year old Jamarrion James Davis, also known as “JJ,” was taken into custody Thursday afternoon.

Police say after a search warrant was executed at 447 North 27th Street in Fort Dodge, Davis fled the scene and was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. His arrest comes less than two days following the murder of 15-year-old Jameel C. Redding Pettrigrew of Fort Dodge.

According to police, Redding-Pettigrew was gunned down Tuesday at around 9:45 p.m. in Fort Dodge. Davis is charged with first degree murder.

DES MOINES – Gov. Kim Reynolds, Thursday, issued a disaster proclamation for Union County in response to severe weather that occurred on June 29. The governor’s proclamation activates the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program and the Disaster Case Advocacy Program.

The Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program provides grants of up to $5,000 for households with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Grants are available for home or car repairs, replacement of clothing or food, and temporary housing expenses. Original receipts are required for those seeking reimbursement for actual expenses related to storm recovery.

The grant application and instructions are available on the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services website at https://dhs.iowa.gov/disaster-assistance-programs. Potential applicants have 45 days from the date of the proclamation to submit a claim.

(Audubon, Iowa) – Officials with the State Fire Marshal’s Office said Thursday afternoon, that at the request of Audubon Fire Chief Tyler Thygesen, a Burn Ban that was in effect since June 1st, is officially rescinded (effective at Noon, 7/6/23).

The Fire Chief’s have looked at all information including drought conditions, water supply for fire protection, and recent rainfall to make the decision to rescind the burn ban for Audubon County.

The Audubon County Emergency Management Agency advises residents of the County, that “When you are performing a controlled burn (following Iowa open burning laws) please remember that you must notify Audubon County Dispatch at 712-563-2631.”

(State Center, Iowa) – A collision between two pickup trucks in Marshall County this (Thursday), resulted in the death of a man from Story County. The Iowa State Patrol says 41-year-old Bruce Ryan Yorik, of Ames, who was not wearing a seat belt, died when the 2005 Chevy Silverado pickup he was driving, turned left in front of a 2020 Ford F-250 pickup.

The crash happened in the westbound lanes of Highway 30 at around 8:50-a.m.  The Patrol says following the collision, the Ford pickup, driven by 27-year-old Anthony Joseph Trca, of Norway (IA), hit multiple stop signs and a 2010 Toyota Corolla, driven by 41-year-old Lisa Marie Halter, of Rhodes (IA).

The Ford continued through a fence before coming to rest. Yorik died from his injuries at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

(Radio Iowa) – The winners of the 2023 Iowa Character Awards are being named. The annual awards salute Iowans who adhere to the six pillars of character: Caring, Citizenship, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility and Trustworthiness. A total of eleven people and organizations will be honored at an awards banquet later this month, according to program coordinator Hilary Ortman.

“We’ll be recognizing the Iowa women’s basketball program with our Jim Hallihan Pursuing Victory with Honor Award,” Ortman says. “They really stood in a national spotlight last year and demonstrated great character in both athletics and off the court as well, so we’re really excited to honor Lisa Bluder and her team.” The awards event will be held July 28th at the Prairie Meadows Conference Center at Altoona. Ortman says one of this year’s top awards is posthumous, honoring a Des Moines woman who died in June of brain cancer.

“We’ll be recognizing the late Lisa Brinkmeyer with the Robert D. and Billie Ray Pillar of Character Award,” Ortman says. “She obviously is a very familiar name across Iowa and an incredible, incredible woman with high character, integrity and kindness.” While at Hubbard-Radcliffe High School, Brinkmeyer was named Miss Iowa Basketball in 1993. She won accolades at Drake University as both a basketball player and an assistant coach, and went on to become an assistant director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Launched in 2005, the Iowa Character program has since recognized more than 150 Iowans — individuals, groups, businesses and organizations.

(Oakland, Iowa) – The Western Iowa Labor Federation (WILF AFL – CIO) and Concerned Citizens of Pottawattamie County, will host a Community Conversation at Destination Coffee, this weekend, in Oakland. Organizers say the event, which begins at 10-a.m., Saturday, is intended to discuss the August 1st Supervisor districting election in Pottawattamie County.

In the Special Election, county residents will have the chance – for the first time – to decide how they want to elect members to the County Board of Supervisors. Organizers say “Now that the groups have collected nearly 4,000 signatures from across the county to trigger this election, their focus for the final weeks before the ballots are cast, will be to inform citizens of early voting and absentee ballots and to answer questions regarding redistricting and their advocacy for Plan 3.” (Sample ballot for the Special Election)

In a press release, Jen Pellant, President of WILF AFL-CIO, says “Our current Board has been irresponsible with taxpayer dollars and unresponsive to taxpayers’ concerns. So we want to talk to people about why we think Plan 3 is a way to get a more accountable Board.” 

Concerned Citizens of Pottawattamie County member Geri Frederiksen says “We want to answer any clarifying questions concerning the election and let people in the rural part of Pottawattamie County know why Plan 3 is the best for everyone.”

And, Shawna Anderson, a resident and business owner in Oakland, says “The best, greatest ideas usually come from people sitting down and having conversations…..having a conversation about supervisor districts,” she says, “Is the best way to understand the facts rather than lies, misinformation and disinformation.”

(Radio Iowa) – Former Vice President Mike Pence, campaigning in western Iowa this week, says he looks forward to debating former President Donald Trump next month. The first debate among the candidates seeking the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential nomination will be held in Milwaukee on August 23rd.

“There are people, including my former running mate, that are signalling a desire to walk away from American leadership in the world and I’m someone that believes we are the leader for the free world, so we are going to have a good debate,” Pence said in Sioux Center, “and it’s going to be about the future of the party, the future of the country, but I really look forward to it.” Pence says there are also key domestic issues that separate the candidates.

“I see not only the former president, but others that are running for president that are walking away from the right to life at precisely the time that we’ve been given a new era for life,” Pence says. Trump has said he may not participate in the debate because he has a massive lead in the polls and because it will be broadcast on Fox, a network Trump says has been hostile toward him.

Pence campaigned in Holstein earlier today (Thursday) and he’s scheduled to be in Neola early this (Thursday) evening to meet with Pottawattamie County Republicans. Pence has said his goal is to visit each of Iowa’s 99 counties before the Iowa Caucuses.
