WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say minor to moderate flooding along the Cedar River in northeast Iowa could worsen if scattered thunderstorms in the forecast bring heavy rainfall. The flooding forced closure of George Wyth Memorial State Park in northwest Waterloo, and street flooding has been reported.

The Shell Rock River is causing minor flooding in Shell Rock and isn’t expected back below flood stage until Tuesday morning — a forecast that could change with any appreciable rain. Judge blocks unemployment benefits for fired Iowa director

News

June 11th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A judge says fired Iowa Finance Authority Director Dave Jamison is disqualified from collecting unemployment benefits due to credible allegations of sexual harassment. Administrative Law Judge Nicole Merrill ruled that the allegations against Jamison by female subordinates haven’t been fully detailed but are credible and amount to “disqualifying misconduct.” In an opinion dated Friday, she says his behavior was “contrary to the best interests” of the state and its workers.

Gov. Kim Reynolds fired Jamison in March after two of Jamison’s subordinates contacted her top aide to complain about his behavior. Jamison had been granted unemployment in April. The state then appealed, arguing Jamison should be ineligible. Merrill says that Jamison doesn’t have to pay back $3,185 that he collected from April 8 through June 2. She says he’s not entitled to those benefits, but the state didn’t challenge them in an April fact-finding interview.

UPDATE: Cass County Pursuit

News

June 11th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

In an update to our earlier reports, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office says at around 8:47-p.m. Sunday, the Sheriff’s Office was notified of a vehicle in the ditch at the intersection of Highway 6 and Midway Road.  The caller stated that the driver covered the license plate with mud and ran away from the scene.  Upon arrival, the deputy discovered that the vehicle had been pulled out of the ditch and left the scene.  The vehicle was located and a traffic stop was attempted due to the license plates being covered with mud.  The vehicle, a green 2006 Ford Freestyle, fled from the Deputy and an Atlantic Police Department patrol car.  The vehicle led officers on a pursuit eastbound on White Pole Road.

There was an unsuccessful attempt to disable the vehicle with stop sticks prior to it entering Atlantic.  At times the pursuit reached speeds in excess of 110 miles per hour.  The pursuit continued eastbound onto Interstate 80.  A little before 9-p.m., a Guthrie County Sheriff’s Deputy joined in the pursuit near Casey. Stop sticks were deployed just before 9:30-p.m., that disabled the vehicle at approximately the 84 mile marker.  The driver, 20-year old Kyle Zenisek, of Solon, was taken into custody without incident.

Zenisek is being charged with Eluding (Felony); OWI 1st Offense (Serious): Theft 5th (Simple) and multiple traffic infractions including Excessive Speed, Reckless Driving and other offenses.  Zenisek is being held at the Cass County Jail.
