CHEROKEE, Iowa (AP) – Authorities have apprehended a 42-year-old man who failed to return to an Iowa sex offender treatment program. The Iowa Department of Human Services announced Friday that U.S. marshals apprehended Cory West on Thursday night at a Tulsa, Oklahoma, motel. Police had been searching for West since Sunday after he didn’t return from his job to the Civil Commitment Unit for Sex Offender in Cherokee, Iowa.131018535b

The Wapello County Court ordered West into the civil commitment program at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute in 2011. He became eligible for a transition release program last fall. The commitment program provides long-term inpatient treatment for violent sexual predators who have served their prison terms but are considered likely to commit future offenses.

West will remain in custody in Oklahoma pending extradition to Iowa.

A giant pig, raised by a group of Iowa State University graduates in honor of a fallen friend, is the winner of the Iowa State Fair’s Big Boar contest. “Peabody” weighed in at 1,273 pounds. Peabody was also the nickname for Brad Peyton, who recently died of pancreatic cancer. He was 57. His friend, David Schaefer, said Peyton grew up showing pigs at the State Fair and longed to win the Big Boar contest.

“Two years ago, we had another boar that was presented and finished second to a boar from Indiana,” Schaefer said. Peyton’s pig in 2012 was named “Fred Hoiboar” and was presented by Iowa State men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg. The team that raised Peabody sold T-shirts, raising $3,000 for the Shining City Foundation, a nonprofit organization that Peyton helped found that builds medical clinics and other projects in remote, underserved areas of China, Africa, and other countries.

“He was an incredible guy,” Schaefer said of Peyton.”He had a lot of passion for people who don’t have a lot.” Peabody will be on display for the remainder of the Iowa State Fair, which ends on August 17. The five-year-old boar beat out “Big Mac” who weighed in at 1,142 pounds. This year’s winner of the State Fair’s “Super Bull” contest (that’s B-U-L-L) is “Big Daddy.”

The bull, raised on Stalcup Farms in Prescott, tipped the scales at 3,012 pounds.

Free Gardening Webinars to Focus on Tree Concerns

Ag/Outdoor, News

August 8th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Master Gardener program is once again offering a series of summer webinars free to all local residents with an interest in gardening. The theme for the 2014 Summer Webinar Series is “Totally Trees.” As the Emerald Ash Borer marches across the state, homeowners need to be prepared to recognize signs of damage, know what control options are available, and consider alternatives for replacement trees. All sessions will be held from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The Cass County Extension Office is a local host site.

On Thursday August 14th, ISU Extension Entomologist, Mark Shour, will speak on Tree Pests, with a focus on recent pests of trees such as the Emerald Ash Borer and the impact of these pests on the Iowa landscape. On Thursday September 4th, Jeff Iles, Extension Nursery and Landscape Specialist, will speak on Ash Alternatives, providing ideas of other species of trees to consider planting in the home landscape.

Local participants will watch the presentation live from campus, projected onto a large screen, and have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the topic live with the presenter. There is no charge to attend the classes, and no requirements to attend previous sessions. Anyone with an interest in the topic is welcome to attend and learn.

Audit: Malvern Librarian edited receipts to hide purchases

News

August 8th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

MALVERN, Iowa (AP) – Auditors say a library director in a southwestern Iowa town repeatedly billed the city for improper purchases and altered receipts to cover up the practice. An investigation released today (Friday) by State Auditor Mary Mosiman found that former Malvern library director Stacey Buick misspent thousands of dollars.

Auditors say Buick billed the city for personal items like video games, groceries, and party decorations. A $1,200 home theatre system, a camera, a coffee machine, a window air conditioning unit and TracPhones were among the items flagged.

Auditors found that many receipts submitted to the city were altered with correction fluid or by cutting and pasting over the original descriptions of items. An envelope discovered in Buick’s office contained the original receipts.

Buick resigned last year.

Iowan faces 3 charges for collision with bicyclist

News

August 8th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

MANSON, Iowa (AP) – A 30-year-old Lake View man has been charged with unsafe passing for a fatal collision between his car and a bicyclist in northwest Iowa. Eric Meyer, of Lake View, also is charged with failure to wear a safety belt and have proof of insurance. The charge of unsafe passing carries an enhanced penalty, if he’s convicted, because the accident resulted in a death.

The Iowa State Patrol says 47-year-old Shawn Gosch, of Onawa, on June 20 was riding a bicycle with 49-year-old Jeffrey Gray, also of Onawa. The patrol says Meyer’s car struck Gosch’s bicycle, which then crashed into Gray’s. Gosch was pronounced dead later at a hospital. Gray was injured.

District Judge questions Bluffs man’s ability to understand proceedings

News

August 8th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

A District Court Judge in Pottawattamie County, Thursday, questioned the competency of a man who was accused of attempting to abduct a child. The Daily NonPareil reports 20-year old Nathan Busse, of Council Bluffs, appeared at a court hearing and apparently had trouble answering questions about whether he understood why he was being charged. His actions caused 4th District Court Judge Timothy O’Grady to continue a hearing on the matter until a later date.

Busse is accused of attempting to abduct a 10-year-old from a Council Bluffs elementary school. He had been scheduled to plead guilty to child stealing – a Class C felony that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, according to Iowa Code – and register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Assistant Pottawattamie County Attorney Jon Jacobmeier said the prosecution and defense attorney Jennifer Nelson Solberg plan to meet later today (Friday) to decide whether to continue working toward a plea deal or take the matter to a trial. While discussing O’Grady’s decision, the prosecutor noted that Busse suffers from mild developmental disabilities.

The family of the victim was, understandably upset at the proceedings. Busse was originally charged with third-degree kidnapping, assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, child stealing and enticing away a minor under the age of 13 for sexual abuse and exploitation.

According to police, around 2:20 p.m. on Jan. 28, 2013, near Edison Elementary – located at South 23rd Street and Second Avenue – a 10-year-old fifth-grader was walking on Fourth Avenue, about a block from the school, to meet a family member for a ride after finishing her duty as a crossing guard.

The suspect approached her and said, “What’s up?” Busse allegedly grabbed the girl’s arm and forced her to walk with him for several feet. The youngster was eventually able to break free of his grasp and run to the family member. The suspect fled the area and was later located by the victim’s father, who detained Busse until police arrived.

The girl and her family did not know Busse.
