Sheriff’s officials in Pottawattamie County have released additional details about a crop dusting helicopter crash that happened Saturday afternoon, south of Macedonia. Authorities identified the pilot as 26-year-old Christopher Moore, of Creston.

Moore was flying over a soybean field when his helicopter hit a non-energized power line just south of Pioneer Trail and 340th Street. Treynor Fire Chief Russ Maguire said Moore was outside the wreckage and conscious when paramedics arrived on the scene. He was transported to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Officials with the FAA were contacted and were expected to investigate the crash.

Police in Creston report 23-year old Christopher Gage Cosenza, of Creston, was arrested early Saturday morning. Cosenza was taken into custody at around 2-a.m. on charges that include Assault on a Police Officer with Injury, Domestic Assault, and Assault with Injury. He was being held in the Union County Jail on $2,000 bond.

Last Friday afternoon, Daniel James Perkins, of Creston, was arrested at the Union County Jail, for Violation of a Protective Order. Perkins remained in the jail on $300 bond.

And, a Clarinda woman reported to Creston Police her vehicle was vandalized while it was parked at the Intersection of New York Avenue and Patriotic Parkway, in Creston. The damage was estimated at $3,000.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines says a significant storm will impact Iowa by late Tuesday into Tuesday night. Before then, scattered thunderstorms are possible today through Tuesday morning. A few severe storms may develop with this initial activity. The primary system arrives over western Iowa by late Tuesday afternoon.

Severe storms are becoming more likely – especially late Tuesday afternoon through mid-evening with tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds all possible. In addition, a significant heavy rainfall event is expected and may result in localized flash flooding and significant rises on area streams and some rivers.

Much colder air will follow the storm by Thursday night. Early morning lows Friday and Saturday are forecast to dip into the 30s in some areas. Highs will only reach the 50s to lower 60s both Thursday and Friday.

“Suicide Prevention Week” begins Tuesday in Iowa and runs through the 15th. Pat McGovern of the Iowa Department of Public Health says this year’s theme is “Suicide Prevention Is Everyone’s Business.” He says they are trying to let everyone know they can help others. “That it doesn’t take special skills, special credentials or anything like that to really ask how people are doing,” McGovern says. “I think in Iowa and the midwest in general, we are all pretty good about greeting people with ‘hi how are you doing,’ but we don’t always listen to the responses — it’s just kind of a social nicety.”

McGovern say you can help by being aware of the need of those around you. “If you see a neighbor or a classmate or a child or a good friend who just seems off. Maybe they’ve had a rough day or may a rough week,” McGovern says. He says follow up with them and ask if there is anything you can do to help. McGovern says taking that step can be difficult for some people. n — if it’s a student you can talk to a guidance counselor or their parents,” McGovern says. “If it’s just a neighbor or somebody you are worried about, there are resources available to make you feel more comfortable about following up with them, or that you can give to them for them to seek some assistance.”

McGovern says people can be hesitant that getting involved might make the situation worse.  He says people might think it will push the person over the edge, but he says research and discussions with people who have survived, shows that isn’t the case. McGovern says it may actually give them hope to take steps to right whatever’s going on in their lives,” he says. McGovern says if you see someone you think is in immediate danger of committing suicide, you should call 9-1-1. Otherwise getting involved will help.

“Research has shown that if we can even day delay by just as little as 30 seconds to a minute, between when overwhelming urge to follow through on suicide hits, if we can just delay that a little bit, we can work through what is going on,” according to McGovern. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ethanol production has become a key issue in Iowa’s closely matched U.S. Senate race, with both candidates pledging support for an industry that is important to the state’s corn-powered agricultural economy. Democrat Bruce Braley and Republican Joni Ernst have both sought to assure voters they oppose a proposal from the Environmental Protection Agency that would reduce the amounts of ethanol that must be blended into gasoline.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa landowners want to see the details of a proposed oil pipeline that would carry crude oil from North Dakota across the state to Illinois. Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners has said the 1,100-mile pipeline would likely cross 17 counties as it crosses from northwest to southeast Iowa. Energy Transfer Partners spokeswoman Vicki Granado says public meetings will take place across Iowa in December.

MACEDONIA, Iowa (AP) — The pilot of a crop-dusting helicopter is being treated for injuries after crashing in western Iowa this weekend. CLARION, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a 5-year-old and a 19-year-old were killed when an Iowa man’s car collided with a semi shortly after the man took his two children in a custody dispute. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports the accident happened near Clarion Friday evening.

A traffic stop Sunday morning in Montgomery County resulted in two people being arrested on drug and other charges. The Sheriff’s Office says at around 9:30-a.m., deputies stopped a vehicle at the intersection of 200th Street and P Avenue. The driver, 26-year old Jacob Tanner Franson, of Villisca, was charged with OWI/1st offense -Drug related, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Reckless Driving. Franson was also cited for Failure to Yield half the roadway, Failure to Maintain Control, and No Insurance-Accident related.

His passenger, 19-year old Abigail Jusdean Cook, of Red Oak, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance/Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Both subjects were transported to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held on $1,000 bond, each.

No injuries were reported following an accident Sunday afternoon, in Red Oak. According to the police report, the accident happened at around 12:15-p.m. at the intersection of North 8th Street and East Washington Avenue. Officials say a vehicle driven by 46-year old Raymond Dale Choate, of Parnell, was traveling south on N. 8th Street and stopped at the controlled intersection with E. Washington. When Choate continued into the intersection, his 2009 Dodge Journey struck a westbound 1995 Ford Escort, being driven by 80-year old Marilyn Sue Westover, of Red Oak.

After the impact, the Escort spun around and hit a legally parked 2005 Dodge Caravan. Choate was given a warning for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign. Damage from the crash amounted to $8,500.

Officers with the Red Oak P-D were assisted at the scene by Red Oak Fire and Rescue personnel, and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies.
