Iowa candidates can’t use campaign funds for child care

News

July 18th, 2018 by admin

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa board that oversees campaign ethics has issued a ruling that keeps Iowa candidates from using campaign money to pay for child care.
The Des Moines Register reports that the Iowa Ethics & Campaign Disclosure Board ruled Friday on a request by Reyma McCoy McDeid, a single mother who ran as a Democrat for a seat in the Iowa House that includes parts of northern Polk County. She lost the June 5 primary to Heather Matson.

McCoy McDeid had requested permission in May to use money she had raised for her race to pay for child care expenses while she campaigned.

State law says candidates can’t use campaign money for personal expenses. In Friday’s ruling, the ethics board said child care costs could be considered either personal or campaign expenses and that Iowa Legislature should clarify the law.

Prosecutor: Panora officer justified in shooting man

News

July 18th, 2018 by admin

PANORA, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa prosecutor says a west-central Iowa police officer was justified in killing a man who charged him holding a knife in an apartment complex hallway.
Guthrie County Attorney Mary Benton says in a report released Tuesday that Panora Officer Rock Armstrong tried repeatedly to calm 26-year-old Joshua Reed, of New Virginia, on July 1 as he sought to talk the raging man out of the apartment.

Benton says Reed was in a friend’s apartment when he threatened the friend with a knife. Armstrong arrived when police were called, and Benton says Reed repeatedly threatened the officer through the locked apartment door.

Benton says Armstrong had no choice but to shoot when Reed came through the door and charged the officer wielding a knife. Benton says she interviewed eye witnesses and reviewed police body camera video in drawing her conclusion.

Sports

July 17th, 2018 by admin

The Tri-Center Trojans punched their ticket to the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament with a Substate 8 Final win over the CAM Cougars 8-3. Tri-Center returns to State after a one year absence and CAM falls just short of back to back appearances.

Tri-Center got to CAM Starting pitcher Thomas Hensley early with 2 runs on 3 hits in the 1st inning. CAM answered back to tie the game at 2 with 2 hits in the top of the 2nd. But Tri-Center went right back to work with 1 run on 2 hits in the 2nd and 4 runs on 5 hits in the third.

Hensley left after 2 1/3 innings and Nick Holste finished the game for CAM. By the time it was all said and done Tri-Center had 8 runs on 14 hits. CAM Head Coach Dan Daugherty gave Tri-Center a lot of credit for their strong offense.

Dan Kenealy was the winning pitcher for the Trojans going the distance allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks.

The Trojans improved to 21-2 on the season and will head to Principal Park in Des Moines next week for the State Tournament.

CAM ends their season at 20-8. The Cougars saw the end to two illustrious athletic careers for Thomas Hensley and Nick Holste. After the game Hensley looked back at his time as a Cougar.

Hensley spoke about what he wants his legacy to be and advice he would give to youngsters working to have success.

Coach Daugherty reflected on what Hensley and Holste have meant to the CAM program.
