DENVER (AP) — Miles Mikolas and Tyler O’Neill each homered to help St. Louis to an early lead and the Cardinals withstood a rally by Colorado to beat the Rockies 7-5 for their fourth straight win. O’Neill also had an RBI double and Kolten Wong added three hits and a sacrifice fly for the Cardinals in a game between teams in the thick of their respective division races and running 1-2 in the NL wild-card race.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ryan O’Hearn and Hunter Dozier hit back-to-back home runs leading off the ninth against Cleveland closer Cody Allen to lift the Kansas City Royals over the Indians 5-4. After a broken water pipe near the outfield fountains led to a half-hour delay in the fourth, the Royals and Indians put on a splashy finish. Cleveland’s Yonder Alonso hit his second homer of the game in the eighth, a two-run shot for a 4-3 lead. O’Hearn and Dozier then rescued Kansas City from a sixth straight loss.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A game between the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Indians was delayed 30 minutes after a pipe burst near Kauffman Stadium’s iconic outfield fountains, causing flooding on the right field warning track. Water began leaking onto the field in the top of the fourth inning. Relievers in the Royals bullpen yelled to alert stadium officials to the problem, triggering the stoppage.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas basketball fans hoping to see coach Bill Self rappel over a seven-story building this weekend will be disappointed. Self announced in May that he would go “Over the Edge” of a downtown Lawrence building to help raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence. The Lawrence Journal-World reports Self said in a statement Friday that he’s been sidelined by a minor hernia repair. Self says he plans to watch the event and will come through with his pledge to raise $10,000 for the charity.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has suspended four freshmen indefinitely for what he calls “multiple incidents of poor choices and behavior.” Newcomers Tayvonn Kyle, Jaeveyon Morton, Joseph Scates and Dallas Taylor-Cortez won’t be involved in team activities or have access to Iowa State’s athletic facilities. Campbell says it was a pattern of conduct rather than a single incident. The Cyclones open the season at home Sept. 1 against South Dakota State.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska running back Tre Bryant is giving up football because of chronic knee pain. Coach Scott Frost says Bryant had difficulty sleeping. Bryant set career highs with 31 carries for 192 yards against Arkansas State last year and followed that with 20 carries for 102 yards against Oregon. He was injured against Oregon and didn’t play again. Frost said Bryant looked good in practices and he was in line to get playing time this season.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — IndyCar driver Robert Wickens underwent surgery this week on his right arm and lower extremities and tests showed the Canadian does not have additional injuries following his crash at Pocono last weekend. Wickens had surgery to stabilize a fracture associated with a spinal cord injury. IndyCar says the severity of that injury is still unknown. IndyCar says Wickens will require additional corrective surgery and rehabilitation. He remains hospitalized in Pennsylvania.

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — The starts of recent IndyCar races at Mid-Ohio and Pocono have been a bit shaky, even though the drivers leading the field to green have been cleared of wrongdoing. Still, as the season winds down and the intensity ramps up, it seems that everybody is riding a fine line when the green flag first flies.

The Atlantic Trojans started the 2018 high school football season in positive fashion on Friday night with a 45-6 victory at Saydel. It was a game that seemed destined for a shoot-out early, with both teams scoring on their opening possessions. Following those traded blows it was all Trojans. Atlantic racked up 25 points in the second quarter to take command of the game and would add 14 more in the third.

A big momentum change came with the Trojans leading 12-6 following a Tyler Moen touchdown run. Moen scored again by picking off a pass from the Eagles’ Cash Lee and returning in 45 yards to pay-dirt. That seemed to take the wind fully out of the Eagles’ sails. Turnovers would play a big role with Saydel throwing the one interception and losing 3 fumbles on the night.

Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said he liked the way the team showed a lot of toughness, running the ball well with multiple players and clamping down on defense. He was a little disappointed in the amount of penalties but felt a number of them were due to aggressive play, which is okay.

Atlantic quarterback Chase Mullenix was 2-5 passing for 49 yards and he rushed 12 times for 81 yards and two touchdowns. The Trojans out-gained the Eagles on the ground 317-110 yards.  Atlantic was also efficient in late down conversions, especially early in the game, going 5 of 9 on third down and 2 of 4 on 4th down.

Saydel’s Cash Lee was 6-8 passing for just 43 yards and 1 touchdown. Andrew Malone was the Eagles’ leading rusher with 55 yards on 9 carries.

Atlantic comes out on top in their first Class 2A game and will head back home to host Hawkeye 10 rival Creston next Friday.
