Fatal C.Bluffs fire on Jan. 2nd caused by electrical issues

News

January 14th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A fire at a home in Council Bluffs on Jan. 2nd that claimed the life of a woman who lived in the basement, was caused by an  electrical problem. The Omaha World-Herald says investigators have determined that an electrical malfunction started near the bed next to an exterior wall. 49-year old Dorothy Ceballos, of Council Bluffs, who was unable to escape the fire in the basement, died from injuries she suffered in the home located at 1302 Seventh Avenue. Fire officials say Ceballos died from smoke inhalation.

Authorities say the area where the fire started was full of electronic equipment, including radio and stereo equipment, all plugged into one outlet via a power strip. It’s unclear though, which particular piece of equipment malfunctioned to cause the fire. Several devices melted together. Investigators called the blaze accidental.

Ceballos was not related to the homeowner, Mary Brown, and did not live at the residence. The woman was an acquaintance of one of Brown’s family members who was not at the house at the time of the fire. Brown and a relative escaped the fire uninjured. A 71-year-old man in the house was treated and released at a Council Bluffs hospital.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say they have broken up a branch of a Mexican drug cartel dealing methamphetamine in the Omaha area. Police announced Tuesday the arrests of 20 people associated with the Sinaloa drug cartel in Mexico following an 18-month investigation.

The Omaha Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency deployed investigators who received tips that a woman in charge of a sizeable methamphetamine ring was operating near Omaha. DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) – An eastern Iowa man battling terminal cancer has died amid his fight to grow medicinal marijuana for his personal use. Dottie Mackenzie confirmed Tuesday that her 49-year-old son Benton Mackenzie died early Monday at his Long Grove, Iowa, home.

Benton Mackenzie had been growing marijuana to create medicinal oil he could both consume and apply to his tumors. He and his wife, Loretta Mackenzie, were convicted in 2014 for conspiring to grow marijuana. The trial garnered national attention.

The Quad-City Times reports the entire family has faced prosecution, including his parents who received misdemeanor counts for hosting a drug house. Those charges were eventually dropped. Dottie MacKenzie says she has found peace with the situation and her son’s death.
