Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa center Luka Garza hopes to be ready for the season opener next month after doctors removed a 9-pound cyst attached to his spleen in early September. Garza said during the team’s annual media day that his doctors don’t really know when or why his cyst developed. He said he played last season without any pain in that area.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs showed in their biggest test so far this season that they are a complete team. Not only did their offense move the ball effortlessly against Jacksonville’s top-ranked defense but their defense produced five turnovers in a 30-14 rout. That bodes well for a team hoping to continue the momentum of a 5-0 start on Sunday night in New England.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Patriots coach Bill Belichick has a track record of finding ways to make things difficult for young quarterbacks. He will now turn his attention to Chiefs second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who Belichick says can do “pretty much everything.”

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — First-year coach Scott Frost and his players sense a breakthrough is coming for a winless Nebraska team approaching the midway point of the season. Frost says penalties and the inability to make important stops on defense are still hurting the Cornhuskers. But the offense is humming with quarterback Adrian Martinez averaging close to 300 yards per game in total offense. The Huskers play at Northwestern this Saturday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Ashley Joens could be just the remedy Bill Fennelly needs for what ails his Iowa State women’s basketball team. The Cyclones need scorers, if only to ease the load on senior star Bridget Carleton, and if Joens has shown anything in her career, it’s a knack for making baskets. The 6-foot freshman scored nearly 2,200 points in her high school career.

UNDATED (AP) — Indiana coach Tom Allen could have been upset after watching his defense allow 49 points last weekend at No. 3 Ohio State. Instead Allen saw encouraging signs on tape. The Hoosiers forced three turnovers. They consistently pressured quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. And they slowed down the Buckeyes’ vaunted ground game. He considered it a solid performance by a young, improving group of players. Indiana faces Iowa this weekend.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Bernie Sanders is embarking on a nine-state tour on behalf of Democratic candidates competing in the November elections, returning to the campaign trail ahead of a decision on another White House bid. The packed October schedule will be the Vermont independent’s most extensive stretch of campaigning since the 2016 presidential race.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Farm states are looking to benefit from a Trump administration plan to allow year-round sales of gasoline with a higher blend of ethanol. President Donald Trump is expected to announce he’s lifting a federal ban on summer sales of high-ethanol blends while in Iowa for a rally Tuesday night in Council Bluffs. Advocates for the ethanol industry say claims that the high-ethanol blend contributes to smog on hot days is unfounded.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Voting has started for this year’s general election in Iowa where voters will choose among candidates in competitive races for governor, five other statewide offices and the state’s four congressional seats. Politicians also are competing for votes in 19 Iowa Senate districts and more than 70 in the Iowa House.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A suspect in a western Iowa slaying has surrendered. Police say 69-year-old Kenneth Still Jr. turned himself in Monday morning at the Pottawattamie County Courthouse. He’s charged with first-degree murder and a weapons crime in the Sunday afternoon shooting of 21-year-old Devon Theisen, of Council Bluffs. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for Still.

Trump expected to make E15 announcement in DC tomorrow

Ag/Outdoor, News

October 8th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Advocates of corn-based ethanol expect President Trump to make a major announcement about the fuel additive tomorrow (Tuesday). “This is something we’ve literally been working on for seven years. If all goes as we think it will, this is going to be a very good day.” That’s Monte Shaw, executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association. Shaw and others expect Trump to announce the E-P-A is preparing a waiver that will allow the year-round sale of E-15 — that’s gasoline with a 15 percent ethanol blend.

“We do think that rule-making can be done in time for June which is when the restriction would come back into play,” Shaw says, “so by taking action tomorrow, President Trump is setting us up to have E15 available across the United States next summer.” Shaw predicts the oil industry will go to court to try to block the waiver for E-15, so legal wrangling may commence soon. In the meantime, Shaw says tomorrow’s (Tuesday’s) announcement should provide a psychological boost to the ag economy.

“And it’s a market boost,” Shaw says, “a little bit at first, but definitely growing over time, so we’ve very excited here.” A number of media outlets are reporting Trump will make the E-15 announcement in Washington before he departs for his rally tomorrow (Tuesday) night in Council Bluffs.

Woman dies after being struck by train in northwest Iowa

News

October 8th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

ALVORD, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a South Dakota woman died after being struck by a train in northwest Iowa. Lyon County authorities say deputies and medics were sent to the accident site a little before 7:30 p.m. Friday in Alvord. The Sheriff’s Office says it appeared that 32-year-old Savannah Flynn, of Marion, South Dakota, may have thought a southbound train was on the east set of parallel tracks when she tried to cross the west tracks and was struck. Flynn died at the scene. Authorities suspect alcohol consumption played a role in her death.
