No. 22 Iowa cruises past Northern Iowa 77-54

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — No. 22 Iowa can unofficially declare itself state champion after bulldozing Iowa State and Northern Iowa. In likely the last matchup between the Hawkeyes and the Panthers for the foreseeable future, Iowa showed how good it can be when it plays to its full potential.
Tyler Cook had 17 points and 13 rebounds, Luka Garza scored 17 and Iowa cruised past Northern Iowa 77-54 on Saturday for its second straight win. Freshman Joe Wieskamp added 10 points for the Hawkeyes (8-2), who opened the game with a 25-7 run and never looked back.

It was the last scheduled game between these two long-time rivals, with Iowa citing the Big Ten’s 20-game season as the reason. They had split the last 14 meetings — but the bigger and more athletic Hawkeyes ran roughshod over the scuffling Panthers (4-6) from the opening tip. Northern Iowa missed 20 of its first 23 shots, and by then Iowa was up 29-10 in the nightcap of a doubleheader that saw Iowa State beat Drake 77-68 in the early game.

The Hawkeyes pushed their lead to 58-30 early in the second half and rolled to their second consecutive in-state win. Iowa beat the Cyclones 98-84 at home in its last outing on Dec 6th.

POLL IMPLICATIONS
Iowa might move up a spot or two after dominating its only game of the week. They’ll host Western Carolina on Tuesday. Northern Iowa hosts Grand Canyon on Wednesday.

Iowa State rallies past Drake 77-68

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — With an ugly defeat staring them in the face, the Cyclones finally found their defense and put away pesky Drake. Michael Jacobson scored 22 points, Marial Shayok had 16 of his 18 in the second half and Iowa State rallied to beat Drake 77-68 on Saturday for its sixth win in seven games.
Freshman Talen Horton scored 15 points with nine rebounds and four assists for the Cyclones, who used a late 12-0 run — keyed by a much stronger effort on the defensive end — to avoid the upset.
Jacobson had seven straight points during Iowa State’s crucial spurt, following a corner 3 with an underneath bucket to give the Cyclones a 65-63 lead. Shayok then buried a 3 with 3:07 left to make it 70-63.

Nick Weiler-Babb scored 13 points with six assists for the Cyclones (9-2), who beat the in-state rival Bulldogs for the fourth time in a row. But it was perhaps for the last time in a while since the annual doubleheader in Des Moines between the schools and Iowa and Northern Iowa is coming to an end.
Nick McGlynn had 19 points to lead Drake (6-2), whose win streak was snapped at five games.

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard has said in the past that the resumption of the rivalry would likely depend on Drake’s willingness to play in Ames. Saturday’s meeting was the 175th between the schools, which are located about 30 miles apart in central Iowa.  The Bulldogs look like they might do some damage in the Missouri Valley this season. Drake wasn’t fazed playing the most talented team it’ll face all season, and the Bulldogs made things tough on the Cyclones with crisp actions on offense and a defense that, at times, got Iowa State out of its comfort zone.

Iowa State had just seven turnovers, and it lost the ball just twice in the second half. … Nick Norton had 11 points, 10 assists and six rebounds for Drake. … Iowa State sophomore Cam Lard has been severely foul-prone in his three games back from suspension. Lard fouled out against Iowa, had four in just seven minutes in a win over Southern and three in three minutes against Drake. … Tremell Murphy scored 12 points with eight rebounds in his return from an elbow injury for the Bulldogs.

UP NEXT: Iowa State hosts Eastern Illinois on Friday. Drake hosts SIU-Edwardsville on Monday.

WAUKEE, Iowa (AP) — The chief operating officer for Waukee Community School District in central Iowa has turned himself in on charges related to improper spending at the district. Waukee police say 50-year-old Eric Rose turned himself at 7 a.m. Saturday. He’s charged with two counts of solicitation to commit a felony and one count of felonious misconduct in office. He was freed on $15,000 bond.

A special state audit report released earlier this month said administrators improperly used state credit cards and spent nearly $129,000 on items and services that “were not in the taxpayers’ best interest.”

Earlier in the year, the district agreed to pay more than $1 million to two former district employees who said they were forced out of their jobs after reporting what they said was misconduct by Rose.
Rose remains listed as the chief operating officer on the district’s website.
