ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Brian Warren tossed in 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and Edric Dennis added a double-double as UT-Arlington pulled away in the second half to beat Northern Iowa 74-65 on Saturday night. David Azore nailed all eight of his free throws and scored 16 for the Mavericks (2-0), while Dennis finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Radshad Davis added nine points and 11 rebounds. UTA had a 37-29 edge on the boards.

AJ Green topped the Panthers (1-1) with 17 points, while Isaiah Brown scored 15 but missed all five of his 3-point shots.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Isaiah Bowser ran for 165 yards and a touchdown and Northwestern upset Iowa 14-10 on Saturday to clinch a spot in the Big Ten Championship. The Wildcats (6-4, 6-1) will now await their opponent for the league title game in Indianapolis next month.

What a disastrous turn of events in Iowa City. Three weeks ago, fans were wondering if this was one of the most talented teams coach Kirk Ferentz has ever had. Now they’re simply hoping to finish above .500 in the Big Ten.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A weird game ended with another wonderful result for Iowa State. Now the Cyclones have to wait and see on the status of star running back David Montgomery. Brock Purdy threw for a touchdown and ran for another score, and No. 23 Iowa State topped Baylor 28-14 on Saturday after a skirmish in the third quarter resulted in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for each player on both teams.

Purdy threw for 230 yards as Iowa State (6-3, 5-2, No. 22 CFP) won a fifth straight Big 12 game in the same season for the first time. Deshaunte Jones added a TD reception and threw for a 2-point conversion, and Iowa State shut out Baylor on five of its seven trips to the red zone.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done. We’re still a young football team,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “I think what’s exciting is that I sit here right now knowing that our best is still out there.” The game took an ugly turn when Montgomery and Baylor linebacker Greg Roberts were ejected after briefly fighting each other early in the third.

The Cyclones and Bears nearly came to blows when a previous play ended up spilling over onto Iowa State’s bench. The bad blood hung around, and the teams nearly staged a full-on brawl during a wild incident that included Roberts slapping Montgomery on the helmet, and Montgomery swinging away in response. Campbell said he wanted to review the tape before commenting on the incident, though he did defend Montgomery.

“David is a leader, so the last thing that I would say that David Montgomery had anything to do with was starting any controversy,” Campbell said. “It certainly looked like it was a secondary action.”
Montgomery finished with 53 yards rushing. The Big 12 will review the incident, and Montgomery could be suspended for the first half of next weekend’s huge game at Texas. Brewer threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns. But he was ejected for his second unsportsmanlike penalty with 5:51 left.
“This was a case of us beating ourselves and not taking advantage of opportunities, most importantly in the red zone and playing at the end of the game without our quarterback because of the earlier decisions by someone else to get involved in a fight,” Baylor coach Matt Rhule said.

Bowl eligibility used to be the main goal at Iowa State, but not anymore. The Cyclones, once 1-3, can clinch a once-improbable spot in the Big 12 title game with two more wins and a West Virginia loss — and the Mountaineers still have to play Oklahoma. “It’s just a mark of who we are, and who we’ve been coached up to be,” receiver Hakeem Butler said.

Montgomery used his Twitter account to apologize for his ejection, saying in part that he “should have not reacted the way I did and I sincerely apologize for that!!! But I will defend my brothers no matter what and i stand on that!”

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Tevin McCaster rushed for three touchdowns and Youngstown State defeated Northern Iowa 31-10 on Saturday. McCaster had 136 yards on 33 carries and became the 10th player in Penguins history to reach 2,700-career rushing yards.

Youngstown quarterback Montgomery VanGorder connected with Darius Shackleford for a 62-yard touchdown on an out route for the game’s first points before McCaster scored the first of his touchdowns from 5 yards out for a 14-0 lead. That TD came on the first play after Shererif Bynum recovered a UNI fumble created by a strip by Ma’lik Richmond.

McCaster scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter, a 29-yarder following a 52-yard pass from VanGorder to Miles Joiner, and a 1-yard score that capped a 12-play drive. The Penguins (4-6, 3-4 Missouri Valley) snapped a two-game losing streak by beating a Panthers (5-5, 4-3) team ranked No. 24 in the FCS coaches’ poll.

The game was halted for several minutes in the fourth quarter after UNI tight end Briley Moore was injured while blocking on a kickoff return. The stadium fell silent and both teams kneeled on the field as Moore was attended to. As he was taken off the field on a stretcher, he raised a fist to the crowd.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Danny Donley kicked a 24-yard game-winning field goal with two minutes remaining and Will Warner’s third interception of the day sealed Drake’s 13-10 win over Marist on Saturday. Donley’s winning kick was set up by Warner’s second pick of the day, intercepting Marist’s Austin Day at the 40 and returning it to the 12.

Marist (5-5, 5-2 Pioneer League) began a final drive with 1:51 remaining, but Day was sacked for a loss of 13 and a play later was intercepted by Warner, allowing Drake (5-3, 4-2) to run out the clock.
Defense was rugged, neither team reaching 300 yards of offense. Drake was held to 47 yards rushing, Marist to minus-9. Each team had six sacks.

Grant Kraemer passed for 199 yards for Drake with a touchdown pass to Steven Doran. Doran led with 71 yards on five catches. Day passed for 290 yards and a touchdown to Juston Christian. Christian had four catches for 113 yards.

Referees initially blamed Iowa State lineman Josh Knipfel and tossed him from the game, which Iowa State led 17-0 at the time. They later corrected it to Montgomery, and Knipfel ran back from the locker room to cheers from the home crowd.

Montgomery finished with 11 rushes for 53 yards.
