Retirement Redux: New Phase for Older Iowans with Life Reimagined

News

June 8th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa – As the state continues to grow older, an increasing number of Iowans are realizing there’s much more life to live after navigating adulthood and the traditional career path. More than 15 percent of Iowa’s population is already age 65 or older, and within the next decade it’s predicted to be more than 20 percent.

Mark Chapman, a senior adviser with AARP, says there has been a steady shift in thinking on the later years, as more older people are determined to seek out meaningful life changes. “A lot of people are looking at just not, ‘Will my finances last?’ or ‘Can I be healthy enough?’ but they want to know ‘What am I going to do? What am I going to be?’ “And it’s driven by a desire to be purposeful in this new life phase.”

Chapman says since this is really uncharted territory, AARP has created a program called Life Reimagined to help people navigate this new view on retirement. Chapman says Life Reimagined offers live workshops as well as tools online that people can access to figure out the question of what’s next, and then how to achieve those goals.
“So Life Reimagined is a personal guidance system that helps people navigate these transitions and pursue possibilities using principles that have been developed by experts in the field,” he explains.

Chapman and Life Reimagined will be in Iowa next week with workshops set for June 17 in Cedar Rapids and June 18 in Des Moines.  More details on those events can be found at lifereimagined.org.

One acre of sweet corn to be donated to Iowa food banks

Ag/Outdoor, News

June 8th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Many low-income Iowa families, that might not be able to afford a summertime staple in the state, will get the chance this year. Cory Berkenes, executive director of the Iowa Food Bank Association, says his agency is partnering with a sweet corn grower to provide thousands of FREE ears of the vegetable to hungry Iowans. “This first opportunity, we’ll have about 500 dozen ears of corn, so about an acre of corn for this first time,” Berkenes says.

The sweet corn seed, donated by Monsanto, was planted by Jacob and Emily Van Manen, owners of J & E’s Delicious Sweet Corn of Kellogg. If the weather cooperates, the sweet corn will be harvested in July and donated to the Food Bank of Iowa for distribution. “A lot of families, you know, just can’t afford the fresh produce,” Berkenes says. “So, having this chance to bring this into their homes…is an added bonus.”

Once harvested, Berkenes says the sweet corn will travel from the farm to the table in less than one week. He’s hoping the effort might be expanded next year.  “This is just the first project like this we’ve done and we’re hoping it maybe can grow into something more in future years. We’re really excited about it,” Berkenes says.

Straw Poll up next, same site as Roast & Ride

News

June 8th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

The site of Joni Ernst’s inaugural “Roast and Ride” this past weekend is where Republicans intend to hold their Iowa Straw Poll two months from now. Critics call the contest meaningless, as campaigns often buy straw poll tickets for supporters and past winners like Michele Bachmann have fizzled ultimately as candidates. So far no 2016 candidate has committed to participating in this year’s Straw Poll, to be held on the grassy fields near Boone where the Farm Progress Show is often staged.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker isn’t an official candidate yet — and he was non-committal Saturday. “Should we be a candidate, we’ll be in Iowa quite a bit,” Walker told reporters. “Whether or not the Straw Poll is a part of that remains to be seen.” Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Mike Huckabee and Lindsey Graham have all said they will NOT participate. Ben Berringer of Lake Mills made the trip to Boone this past Saturday and he’s hoping to make the return trip two months from now to see candidates like Ted Cruz, who wasn’t there Saturday.

“We’re going to try to get back, if at all possible,” Berringer said. Republican Congressman Steve King gave a full-throated pitch for the Straw Poll on Saturday, arguing its value is in winnowing the field, especially this year when so many candidates are in the race. “The field does need to be narrowed,” King said. “We don’t want to say, ‘No,’ to anybody, but it does need to be narrowed.”

A recent Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics poll found only half of Iowa Republicans think it’s important for candidates to attend the Straw Poll. The event is a fundraiser for the Republican Party of Iowa and tickets to the 2015 Straw Poll are 30 dollars each. The first Iowa Straw Poll was held in Ames in August of 1979. Ever since, it has been held the summer before a presidential campaign year in which Republicans have a competitive race for the White House.
