Summer will arrive this coming weekend and along with the fun in the sun many Iowans have planned, they’re reminded heat kills more Americans each year than hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes and floods combined. Meteorologist Kelsey Angle, the warning coordinator at the National Weather Service office in Johnston, says it’s been cooler lately, but don’t be fooled. Angle says, “Temperatures will be increasing as well as the humidity and with that does come the danger if people don’t take the necessary precautions.”

It’s unfortunate, but every summer there are many Iowans hospitalized — or killed — by heat-related illnesses. “I just want to make sure people are drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored and loose-fitting clothing if they’re going to be working outside during the hot summer months,” Angle says, “and if they’re starting to feel the impact from the heat, that they’re taking frequent breaks.”

When it’s really hot and humid, evaporation doesn’t take place and the body can’t cool well. Your body temperature can increase to a potentially-fatal 106 degrees in as little as ten minutes and then, heat stroke can strike. Most animals are just as susceptible.

Police in Red Oak arrested 28-year old Justin Brance Wilson, of Red Oak, late Sunday night. Wilson was taken into custody at around 11:30-p.m in the 100 block of N. 2nd Street, on a charge of Public Intoxication. He was being held in the Montgomery County Jail Monday morning on $300 bond.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa continued to add people to its do-not-rehire list over the past year despite the concerns raised by some representatives of public employees and at least one lawmaker. The Des Moines Register reports public documents show 67 people have been added to the list that now includes 943 people ineligible to work in state government. Since the state first released the list in April 2014, there have been government oversight hearings and a lawsuit on behalf of three former workers.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton is trying to build an organizational edge in Iowa as some of her lesser-known Democratic rivals clamor for attention in the state that tripped up her first presidential campaign. Clinton flew to Iowa after her high-profile campaign kickoff Saturday in New York. She appeared at a Sioux City house party Saturday night, telling supporters that “everybody has a role to play.”

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A new Miss Iowa has been chosen to represent the state. Twenty-one-year-old Taylor Wiebers of Clinton won the title Saturday night at the pageant in Davenport. Wiebers was Miss Clinton County going into the state competition. She will now represent Iowa in the Miss America pageant in September. The first runner-up is Miss Muscatine County Kristen One. The 23-year-old is from Vernon Hills, Illinois.

CUSHING, Iowa (AP) — Since the Droegmiller family lost their home and belongings to a fire in March, they have been overwhelmed by help from others. The Sioux City Journal reports that when Elaine Droegmiller explained why she was buying eight pairs of shoes, another customer volunteered to pay for them. After the fire in Cushing that likely started with an electrical problem friends and classmates helped replace the autographed team balls and the River Valley letter jacket that high school senior Jordan Droegmiller lost in the fire. Donations from people in the community helped the family replace Jordan’s senior pictures. The Droegmillers are planning to buy a modular home for their farm that they will move into later this year. Until then, the family is renting a home in Cushing.

Members of the Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton School Board will gather at 7-p.m. Monday at the High School in Elk Horn, for a regular session. Among the discussion and possible actions items on their agenda, is:

Approval of contracts with the Driver’s Education team (Paul McKay, Dick Casady, Casey Pelzer and Jeremy Blake); Renewal of a contract with My College Options; Approval of a contract with IWCC for concurrent enrollment courses; approval of bids for a new school bus; approval of quotes for a new phone system in both buildings; Approval of Principal’s contracts for 2015-16; approval of shared wrestling with Audubon, and, setting the date time and location for a public hearing pertaining to “Continued participation in the Instructional Support Program.”

A public hearing will be held at the start of Monday’s CAM School Board meeting in Anita, with regard to a Resolution pertaining to the proposed continued participation in the Instructional Support Program (ISP). The meeting in the CAM High School Media Center gets underway at 6:30-p.m.

The Board will later discuss and likely act on passing an ISP Levy Resolution, along with other, administrative matters. That includes open enrollment applications, resignations, contracts, and action on a proposal to add Project Lead the Way and a technology class at the Middle School.

The CAM Board will also discuss and likely act on: Phone quotes; Fees/Lunch Prices for 2015-16; Bus bids; A stipend for the assistant golf coach; Principals and salaried employees’ contracts for 2015-16; Administrative Assistant contract, and matters pertaining to facilities projects and quotes.

The Griswold School Board will meet Monday evening in the Central Office Board room. During their 5:45-p.m. session, the Board will receive updates on the Sports Lighting and Security System.

New Business includes action on: Approval of Non-certified staff negotiations; Administrative contracts; Nutrition prices; A van purchase; and, approval of fuel bids, technology support, and registration fees.

The meeting will conclude after a closed session to evaluate the Board Secretary, and action on approval of a Board Secretary contract once the open session resumes.

Atlantic and Marne Fire and Rescue, along with Medivac Ambulance were dispatched to the scene of a rollover accident Sunday evening, on Interstate 80. According to Cass County Communications, a vehicle occupied by four persons was traveling westbound when it went out of control for reasons yet unknown, and rolled over near the Exit 54 off ramp, in the north ditch.

The injuries appeared to have been minor, with cuts and bruises reported. The accident happened just after 5:35-p.m.

Police in Red Oak report the arrest early this (Sunday) morning, of a local man on a Public Intoxication charge. 33-year old Tyler Anthony Bond, of Red Oak, was taken into custody at around 2:35-a.m. in the 300 block of Coolbaugh Street. The man was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $300 cash bond.

Authorities say speed appears to have been a factor in a motorcycle versus pedestrian accident Saturday evening, in Council Bluffs. According to Bluffs Police, the accident happened at around 6:50-p.m. on 20th Street at the intersection with Avenue A.

Authorities say 21-year old Spencer Seyler, of Council Bluffs, was driving a 2000 Yamaha Motorcycle westbound on Avenue A, a one-way street.   37-year old Jeremiah Sapien, of Council Bluffs, was walking across Avenue A on 20th Street. Seyler said that he and another motorcycle operator identified as 23-year old Tommy Milam, of Council Bluffs, were traveling westbound on Avenue at “25-30 MPH” when Jeremiah Sapien “walked out in front of them.”

Sapien told police he saw the motorcycles approaching but believed they were a block away. He stepped into the roadway and was struck by one of the motorcycles. He believed the motorcycles to be speeding. The investigation revealed that Seyler’s motorcycle struck Sapien, and then struck a parked Ford F-150. Seyler was ejected from the motorcycle. Seyler was transported by CBFD to Mercy Hospital with nonlife
threatening injuries. Sapien was transported by CBFD to Creighton with possible serious injuries. His injuries turned out to be non-life threatening also.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in this case. Speed is believed to be a factor. Traffic charges related to driver’s license status and insurance have been filed against both motorcycle operators. Additional charges may be filed.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Residents of Cedar Rapids are trying to clean up the mess left behind by flash flooding earlier this week — including almost a dozen cars that stalled on streets trying to drive through high water. Television station KCRG says floodwater that swamped city streets overnight Thursday drained away quickly, but not before damaging cars and sending rescue crews scrambling.

CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified a woman shot and killed in an eastern Iowa shopping mall as 20-year-old Andrea Farrington, who worked in the children’s museum at the mall. At a news conference yesterday, Coralville police said Farrington was shot multiple times in her torso Friday evening, and that a handgun and bullet casings were found at the scene. Farrington died at an Iowa City hospital.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Police have arrested a man they say drunkenly crashed into three parked cars, sped off, then returned to the scene. The Telegraph Herald reports that 28-year-old Brett Howes was arrested Friday and charged with eight counts.
