Snow Ordinance in effect in Clarinda

News

December 2nd, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The Clarinda Police Department is reminding citizens of Clarinda about the snow ordinance. The ordinance states that; no person shall park any motor vehicle or other apparatus upon any street of the city that will obstruct the removal of snow when there has been an accumulation of two (2) inches or more. Any vehicle left parked on any street in violation of this ordinance may be impounded, and the registered owner of the vehicle will be subject to a $15.00 parking fine, and payment of all applicable towing and storage fees in order for the vehicle to be released.

The parking ban remains in effect until the snow ceases to fall and the streets have been plowed from curb to curb.

Nebraska law license of Iowa-based attorney suspended

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has suspended the law license of an Omaha attorney whose office is located in Council Bluffs. Frank Robak Sr.’s Nebraska license was suspended for at least a year on Friday after a client complained that Robak refused to refund his $5,000 retainer after inadequate work on a case.

Robak told the Nebraska Counsel for Discipline that he had told the client he was “not in a position” to refund the $5,000 because he had been hospitalized and was on Social Security disability. After initially answering questions about the complaint, Robak failed to file answers to the formal complaint and charges.

Robak can apply for reinstatement after one year if he shows that he is fit to practice and submits to monitoring for two years.

No. 24 Iowa State barely survives, beats FCS Drake 27-24

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State insisted on playing 12 games, cycling through a pair of FCS opponents before settling on tiny Drake. That decision nearly resulted in the most embarrassing loss in school history. David Montgomery ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns and No. 24 Iowa State survived a near-upset by the non-scholarship Bulldogs on Saturday, winning 27-24.

Brock Purdy had 153 yards passing and a TD and ran for another score for the Cyclones (8-4), who fought through persistent rain and a muddy, torn-up field for their seventh win in eight games.
It hardly felt like a victory, though, against a team that agreed to play this makeup game only two weeks ago, and Iowa State coach Matt Campbell blamed the close call on execution instead of effort.
“I don’t know that we played with great detail on a surface like that, where every inch matters,” Campbell said.

It was so muddy that Iowa State’s band wasn’t allowed to perform at halftime. Still, the Cyclones looked uninspired at best — and it might have made them less desirable when bowls make their picks on Sunday. “If it does, so be it. All we can be is us,” Campbell said.

Flags in Iowa lowered Saturday for fallen WWII sailor

News

December 1st, 2018 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Flags in Iowa are flying at half-staff to honor a World War II sailor from Iowa killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags on state property lowered Saturday to honor Navy Fireman 1st Class Bert E. McKeeman. The date coincides with a burial service set in Council Bluffs for McKeeman’s remains. McKeeman, of Council Bluffs, was aboard the USS Oklahoma when it was attacked Dec. 4, 1941, by a Japanese bomber. McKeeman was 25. McKeeman’s remains were identified in August and returned to his family. His burial will include full military honors.

The flags are also ordered to half-staff for the next 30-days, by order of the Governor, in remembrance and honor of President George H.W. Bush.

More snow, high winds hitting Nebraska, Iowa

News

December 1st, 2018 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Overnight rain has turned to snow and sleet for most of Nebraska, as well as much of northwestern and central Iowa. The National Weather Service issued winter storm warning Saturday for northern and central Nebraska, as well as a winter weather advisory for much of eastern, southwestern and the western edge of the state. The warning stretched in northwestern Iowa, including Sioux City. The winter advisory in Iowa starts at the west-center border and moves northeast and includes Ames and Marshalltown.

The service also warned of high winds across both states gusting up to 65 mph in parts of Nebraska and up to 50 mph in central and southern parts of Iowa. In areas where it’s snowing, the wind is expected to cut visibility and make driving dangerous.

The service says some areas in central, west-central and north-central Nebraska, including Valentine, could get as much as 14 inches of snow by Sunday evening. Numerous accidents have been reported. Police in Omaha were responding to injury accidents only due to the number of crashes. And, while there have been many accidents in the KJAN listening area, we aren’t aware of any injuries that required an ambulance. Roads at mid-day were partially covered with snow in the immediate area, but completely covered further north and west.

Gov. Reynolds orders flags at half-staff to honor George HW Bush

News

December 1st, 2018 by Ric Hanson

(DES MOINES) – Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered flags at half-staff effective immediately and continuing for 30 days to honor former President George HW Bush. “America lost a great leader with the passing of George HW Bush. A man whose legacy is one of service, statesmanship and values,” Gov. Reynolds said. “Last night, we didn’t just lose a patriot who dedicated his life to serving America, but also a loving husband, father and grandfather who now leaves behind a grieving family.  “Our hearts and our prayers continue to go out to the Bush family,” she continued. “It is my hope that as a nation, we will remember his legacy and as leaders in public service, we will work to meet the standard he set for many years to come.”

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
