The Exira-EHK Spartans were able to take over the game in the second half and defeat the Boyer Valley Bulldogs 59-43 on Thursday night in Elk Horn. The Spartans only led by a point at the end of the first quarter but got the lead to 12 by half. The lead stayed near the 10 point margin for most of the second half but the Bulldogs did climb within 6 at one point of the third quarter. The Spartans took full control early in the fourth quarter to advance on in the postseason.
Senior point guard Cole Burmeister had a nice night for the Spartans, dropping in 20 points to lead all-scorers in the contest. After the game Burmeister said the Spartans did a better job of trying to push the ball of the floor against the resistance from the Bulldogs.
The Spartans improved to 20-2 on the season and will now face the Audubon Wheelers in the Class 1A District 15 Semifinals next Tuesday night. Burmeister said the Wheelers will be a tough challenge.
Boyer Valley finishes their season with a record of 10-12. Lucas Berens was a force inside for the Bulldogs, finishing with 17 points.
We’ll have coverage of that Exira-EHK vs. Audubon game on Tuesday night. That game will be the second half of the Semifinal doubleheader at 8:00pm. The first game of the night will feature the AHSTW Vikings against the Ar-We-Va Rockets and we’ll have that game as well, set for a 6:30pm start.
The Audubon Wheelers fended off a scrappy Logan-Magnolia squad to come away with a Class 1A District 15 Quarterfinal win 51-44. The Wheelers held a lead from the mid point of the second quarter through the end of the game but the Panthers kept within striking distance throughout. Logan-Magnolia led 15-12 at the end of the first and Audubon rallied for a 4 point edge by halftime. The Wheelers made it a 7 point lead by the end of the third and Logan-Magnolia got within three points with :30 left in the game. Audubon senior Tate Killeen came up big at the free throw line, hitting back to back one-and-bonus opportunities to seal the win.
After the game Killeen talked about heading to the free throw line in that big late game moment.
Audubon Head Coach Colleman Mullenix thought the Wheelers did a much better job with ball movement on offense in the second half.
Killeen led all-scorers in the game with 18 points. Kaiden Smith and Lane Lawson both finished with 12 for the Wheelers who improve to 16-6 on the season. Audubon advances to the Class 1A District 15 Semifinals and will face the Exira-EHK Spartans next Tuesday night at 8:00pm back in Elk Horn.
Logan-Magnolia was led by 12 points from Matt Soetmelk. The Panthers finish the season with a record of 11-10.
Don Bosco leads with 31 points in Class 1-A after day one. Denver is second with 29.9 and Underwood is third with 23.5.
In Class 2-A, West Delaware has 19 points to lead a crowded field. Solon has 18 points and PCM is third with 15.5.
Waverly-Shell Rock leads the big schools with 31.5, just ahead of Southeast Polk with 25 and Fort Dodge with 23 points.

The Iowa Board of Medicine reports 53-year old Alan J. Schenne, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), who formerly practiced family medicine in Mapleton, entered into a combined Statement of Charges and Settlement Agreement with the Board on February 8, 2019. The Board alleged that Dr. Schenne engaged in sexual misconduct when he sent sexually suggestive text messages to, and engaged in sexual relations with, a female co-worker for whom he also provided medical care, in Mapleton.
The Board also alleged that Dr. Schenne engaged in sexual harassment in Mapleton, when he sent sexually suggestive text messages to two female co-workers and the text messages made the female co-workers uncomfortable. Under the terms of the February 8, 2019, combined Statement of Charges and Settlement Agreement, the Board issued Dr. Schenne a Citation and Warning and ordered him to pay a $5,000 civil penalty and Dr. Schenne voluntarily surrendered his Iowa medical license.
