TWILA MAXINE OSBORN-GARSIDE, 76, of Adair, died Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Cass Health, in Atlantic. Funeral services for TWILA OSBORN-GARSIDE will be held 11-a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, at the United Methodist Church in Adair, with Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Adair in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation with the family present will be held at the church on Wednesday, from 9-a.m. until the time of service.

Burial is in the Sunny Hill Cemetery in Adair.

Memorials may be directed to the Des Moines Obedience Training Club, United Methodist Church in Adair, or the American Cancer Society. Memorial contributions may be left at or mailed to the funeral home (P.O. Box 523, Atlantic, IA, 50022).

Lenox CSD Superintendent reports no credible evidence of a potential threat of violence despite social media post

(Lenox, Iowa) – The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office says Lenox School District Superintendent Dave Henrichs, today (Saturday), issued a statement to parents with students in the District, with regard to a potential threat made on social media that was investigated and deemed not credible. PEGGY LOU PIERSON, of Oakland, died Friday January 5, 2024, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. Funeral services for PEGGY PIERSON will be held 11-a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is assisting the family with arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday evening from 5-7 PM, at the Oakland United Methodist Church.

PAUL R. RATHMAN, 83, of Council Bluffs (formerly of the Cumberland-Massena area), died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha. Funeral services for PAUL RATHMAN will be held 11-a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs. Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home in Council Bluffs has the arrangements.

Visitation will be during one-hour prior to the service, Wednesday, at the church.

Interment with Military Honors will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

S.W.A.T. Valkyrie cleans house on Friday in Dual Tournament

The S.W.A.T. Valkyrie girl’s wrestling team won against Ames, Lewis Central, and Missouri Valley in a dual tournament on Friday night. S.W.A.T. had six girls who went undefeated in the duals to help them achieve an overall victory on Friday night. Jazz Christensen (100), Addison Herr (110), Quincy Sorensen (115), Bailey Lillard (130), Grace Britten (170), and Ellen Gerlock (190) came out undefeated during all their duals. S.W.A.T. finished with only five decisions as they won three of the five and the rest were either falls or forfeits.

S.W.A.T. will be back in action on January 9th when they host the S.W.A.T. Quad against Denison-Schleswig, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, and Southwest Iowa at 5:30 p.m.

Hawkeyes Pin Their Way Through Day 1

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team went 2-0 on day one of the NWCA National Duals. The Hawkeyes recorded 10 pins and six technical falls against Adrian College and Presbyterian.  

Second-seeded Iowa opened the day with a, 49-1, win over Adrian College. Sterling Dias opened the dual at 101 pounds with a pin in the first period over Alexis Hart-Butcher, 1:32. Ava Bayless made quick work at 109 pounds over Emily Mendez, notching an 11-1 tech. fall. At 116 pounds, Brianna Gonzalez stayed undefeated on the season with a pin over Carleigh Czerneski at 4:36. Felicity Taylor came in at 123 recording the third pin of the afternoon in just 1:21 over Angela LoRusso.  

The action continued at 130 with Emily Frost pinning Reece Martin in 1:12. At 143, Reese Larramendy notched the pin against Taylor Cutler in 1:10. Bella Mir defeated Taylor Cutler in just 1:10 with a pin, and Alivia White closed out the dual at 191 with a pin in 1:08. 

The Hawkeyes finished day one defeating seventh-seeded Presbyterian, 39-4. Dias captured a quick fall in just 32 seconds over Chiara Barbieri at 101. Bayless and Gonzalez both notched 10-0 tech. falls at 109 and 116. Ava Rose recorded a win at 130 via decision over tenth-ranked Alyssa Mahan, 4-2. Lilly Luft recorded a 10-0 tech. fall against Olivia Waller at 136, followed by a pin by Ella Schmit at 143 over Madeline Kubicki in 5:14. Marlynne Deede and Haley Ward notched 10-0 tech. falls at 155 and 170; Deede defeating Isabella Badon and Ward defeating tenth-ranked Henlee Hayes. Jaycee Foeller made her season to debut to cap off the night. She defeated Ella Beam via pin in 2:05.

No. 4 Hawkeyes Knock Out Scarlet Knights

New Brunswick, NJ – The fourth-ranked Iowa women’s basketball team defeated Rutgers, 103-69, on Friday night inside Jersey Mike’s Arena. It was the first sellout for Rutgers women’s basketball since 2006. Iowa improved to 15-1 on the season and 4-0 in Big Ten play.

All-American Caitlin Clark recorded her third triple-double this season leading scoring with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. It was her 14th career triple-double.

Five Hawkeyes recorded double digit points. Kate Martin registered double digits in the first half finishing with 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Gabbie Marshall finished with 12 points, and Sydney Affolter and Hannah Stuelke each scored 10 points apiece.

Clark recorded nine points and Davis went 2-for-2 from three in the first quarter to aid the Hawkeyes in the early lead. Iowa outrebounded the Scarlet Knights, 31-13, in the first half to head into halftime with a 55-30, advantage.

It was more of the same in the second half as Iowa outscored Rutgers, 26-16, in the third quarter, shooting 62.5% from the field. Iowa closed out the game going on a 7-0 run midst of the fourth quarter.

It was Iowa’s fifth 100-point outing and 11th 20+ point victory of the season. It is also the first time in the Lisa Bluder era the Hawkeyes have started 15-1.
