Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says within a week she will unveil a plan to “go after Wall Street abuses” that caused the last recession. “I’m going to go after what I think are the real problems,” Clinton said. “Not the problems of the past, the problems of today because what I am interested in Is stopping something like this happening again. That is my goal.” Clinton made that vow during a town hall meeting in Davenport Tuesday afternoon.

Clinton began by touting the Affordable Care Act and outlining steps she says would “rein in” health care costs. Clinton also promised to confront “monopolistic control over pricing” in states like Iowa. “Iowa doesn’t have enough competition to get the costs down,” Clinton said. “You know, you have one big insurance company — Wellmark — which covers a lot of people and has just gotten approval from your insurance commissioner to raise premiums between 18 and 28 percent. That is a lack of competition.”

Clinton is campaigning in Mount Vernon this morning (Wednesday) and in Council Bluffs this afternoon (Wednesday). Six competitors for the REPUBLICAN Party’s 2016 presidential nomination are campaigning in Iowa today (Wednesday) as well. Jeb Bush has stops scheduled in Muscatine, Oskaloosa and West Des Moines. Donald Trump has a midday rally planned in Waterloo. Bobby Jindal and Rick Santorum are campaigning in western Iowa. Mike Huckabee will be in central Iowa.

Tickets go on sale today (Wednesday) to the general public for the first ever concert to be held in Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City in August of next year. Former Hawkeye All-American and N-F-L tight end Dallas Clark lead the push for the concert billed as “The Back Porch Revival.”

“We have Blake Shelton as our headliner along with many other great artists, a couple still be announced,” Clark says. “It’s gonna be an epic night, but the best part about this whole revival is that all the proceeds from this concert go and help support the Native Fund — which is an organization that me and a few friends started up.” The idea for the Native Fund started back in 2008 with the tornado that devastated Parkersburg and then the flooding in eastern Iowa. Clark, a Livermore native, was playing for the Indianapolis Colts at the time and watching from afar.

“Kind of felt helpless and wanted to do something and didn’t really know what to do. I came up with kind of this epiphany that God put on my heart of Iowans helping Iowans and kind of an Iowa version of the Red Cross,” Clark explains. Clark’s N-F-L schedule didn’t allow him to make much progress with the idea until a few years later when his football playing days ended.

“Moved the family back to Iowa and retired and it kinds of was still weighing on my heart a little bit and made a few phone calls this spring. And I mean it’s been non-stop since this spring when we kind of ran it across the University of Iowa and Mr. Barta (Iowa AD) gave us the green light with the stadium and the university’s approval,” Clark explains. Now he is hoping people will see what they can do by purchasing a concert ticket.

“Be a part of history and help the state of Iowa all in one,” Clark says. Iowa football season ticket holders got a chance to buy tickets to the event prior to opening up sales for the general public. Clark hopes those who don’t see the Hawkeyes as their favorite team will get involved too.

“Non-Hawkeye fans I think if you can look into ‘hey I am buying a ticket because I want to help the Native Fund and I want to help Iowans helping Iowans,’ then please buy a ticket and come and swallow your pride of red or purple or blue and be a part of the big event” Clark says. “Because it is, it’s an Iowa celebration, it’s an Iowa event.” Clark says when it comes time to helping, Iowans are Iowans no matter what school they support or where they live.

“It’s going to be where is the need let’s go. We’re not going to worry about the details, you just go and you help your neighbor when they need help. That’s the Iowa way and that’s what I put my hat on,” Clark says. Clark hopes the Native Fund builds on the idea of the Iowa way of helping each other.

“It’s just something that we need to constantly remind ourselves of why this state is great, what it means to be an Iowan and why it is so important,” Clark says. “And I don’t think it hurts to be reminded of that and to have situations where we can prove that. An I think that’s how we build the love and the foundation that we have in our great communities throughout the state.” Tickets for the August 27th concert go on sale at 10 a-m today (Wednesday) on the www.thebackporchrevival.com website.

Other country artists set to perform include: David Ray, Morgan Frazier and Tucker Beathard (who is the brother of Hawkeye quarterback C.J. Beathard). There will be around 56-thousand tickets sold with prices starting at 39 dollars. Actor Ashton Kutcher and golfer Zach Johnson, both native Iowans, are on the board of directors of the non-profit that Clark created for The Native Fund.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Four former prison guards at a maximum security penitentiary in eastern Iowa face charges after authorities say they used illegal drugs while armed at work. Twenty-nine-year-old Garrett Barton, 29-year-old Ethan Darrow, 38-year-old Marques Maryland and 28-year-old Seth Vogel face different charges ranging from firearms possession to possession of controlled substances. Each man has agreed to plead guilty.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines man has been sentenced to 65 years in prison for his part in the death of a 5-year-old girl, who overdosed on morphine. Deshaun Trombone pleaded guilty to child endangerment resulting in death and other charges in the death of Jayda Canada. She died on Oct. 7, 2014, and an autopsy showed morphine in her system.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Three top officials with Ron Paul’s 2012 presidential campaign claim political motivations are behind charges alleging they violated federal financial disclosure laws by secretly paying an influential Iowa politician for his endorsement. Federal prosecutors, however, say the men broke several federal laws when they concealed payments to former Iowa Sen. Kent Sorenson after he jumped from the Michele Bachmann campaign to the Paul campaign a few days before the January 2012 Iowa caucuses. Trial is scheduled for next Tuesday in Des Moines.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton says she’ll soon offer a plan to deal with “Wall Street abuses.” In Iowa Tuesday, Clinton said that in the next week she’ll have a proposal to “go after Wall Street abuses and rein in the too-big-to-fail banks and other institutions.” Clinton has maintained strong ties to Wall Street from her time as a New York senator.

Due to a water main break and loss of water pressure, the City of Hancock has been placed under a Drinking Water Warning. This warning should be in effect for the next 48 hours or until water testing validates that water is safe for consumption.

What citizens should do during a Drinking Water Warning:
– DO NOT DRINK WATER WITHOUT BOILING FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water.
– This should be done when using water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation.

Boiling water before use will kill bacteria and other organisms that may have entered the system during break and subsequent water pressure drop.  Repairs are being made and water safety testing will be conducted. These tests may take up to 48 hours. This warning will remain in effect until testing validates the water is safe for consumption.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – Leaders in Council Bluffs say developers are showing interest in a large, long-vacant brick building. Mayor Matt Walsh tells the Daily Nonpareil that plans are in the works to renovate the building located at South Sixth Street and 10th Avenue, which was part of a two-building operation by the International Harvester Company years ago.

City Community Planning Department Director Don Gross says officials have talked about the project “in a conceptual way” and that details haven’t been worked out. Neither Walsh nor Gross would reveal who is interested in revamping the building.

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz will be touring Iowa this month, with stops in the KJAN listening area beginning Mon., Oct. 12th. The junior U.S. Senator from Texas will be in Rockwell City, Sac City and Sioux City, on Oct. 12th.

And he’ll make stops in Glenwood, Sidney, Clarinda, Atlantic and Council Bluffs on Friday, Oct. 23rd.

It’s not often we hear about methamphetamine lab busts in Iowa any more, but crimes and other problems associated with meth addiction continue to raise concerns. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley will chair a field hearing of the U-S Senate Judiciary Committee in central Iowa next week to discuss the ongoing battle with meth. Grassley says Iowa law enforcement and drug treatment officials tell him the problem is still “severe.”

Grassley says, “While some state and federal laws have helped to limit meth production in our state, Mexican drug cartels are apparently stepping in to eliminate the gains we’ve made in the fight against meth.” In recent years, state and federal legislation has restricted the ability to buy key ingredients used in making meth, like allergy medications that contain pseudoephedrine. Still, drug lords south of the border are managing to smuggle in larger and larger quantities of the ready-to-use drug.

“The hearing is designed to learn about current trends concerning meth use and distribution in Iowa,” Grassley says. “Another purpose of it is to bring awareness to the issue, and another purpose, to find out if there are ways the federal government can help address the problem beyond what we’re already doing.” Iowans who want to offer input at the hearing but who can’t attend will still have options.

“I intend to hear from witnesses on the front lines in the battle against meth abuse,” Grassley says, “in addition, to help us gain full understanding of the problem, Iowans can submit written testimony for the hearing record.” The hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday, October 13th, at 10 A-M in the main auditorium of the State Historical Building in Des Moines.

The Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department’s Board of Directors will hold a special meeting Wednesday evening at the Parks and Rec Building at Sunnyside Park (1200 Sunnyside Lane). During the session, which begins at 5:15, the Board will discuss, but take no action, on a 5-year plan for the Parks and Rec Department.

Every year during September and October, first grade students from the Atlantic, Griswold, and CAM school districts visit the hospital and clinics to learn more about healthcare careers, as well as what it’s like to be a patient. With the assistance of the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the first graders are taken on a tour that highlights areas such as the Atlantic Medical Center, Emergency Department, cafeteria, laboratory, and the nursery.

During the tour, the students also participate in a mock tonsillectomy. Jena Waters, R.N. and Quality Specialist, guides them through the steps of preparing for surgery and recovery. She shows the students x-rays, and explains what kinds of medical equipment they might see as a patient. During the mock tonsillectomy, the kids get involved by playing different roles including admissions clerk, doctor, nurse, patient, parents, or lab technician.

Sheriff’s officials in Union County say an Atlantic man, 35-year old Harold James Shoemaker,was arrested Monday night at the Union County Law Enforcement Center. Shoemaker was wanted on a Union County warrant for failure to appear in court on a child support matter. He was being held in the Union County Jail on $2000 bond.
