Moss Named Walter Camp Preseason All-American

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Senior Riley Moss has earned Walter Camp Preseason Second-Team All-America honors, it was announced Tuesday by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Moss, a defensive back from Ankeny, Iowa, has also earned preseason All-America honors from Phil Steele and he is a preseason All-Big Ten selection by Phil Steele and Athlon Sports. He was also named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List.

During the 2021 season, Moss was a first-team All-America selection by Sporting News and he was voted the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year. Moss was a first-team All-Big Ten selection by both league coaches and media and was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. He also earned Iowa’s Team Hustle Award.

Moss is second in school history in career interception return yards (239) and he is one of three players in program history with three interception return touchdowns. In 41 career games, Moss has 111 tackles (92 solo), 4.5 tackles for loss, 10 interceptions and 25 pass breakups.

For those area fans of Ryan Hawkins, the former Northwest Missouri State and Creighton star, you can watch the NBA Summer League on TV.  Ryan will play for the Toronto Raptors during the July 7-17, 2022 league schedule.  NBA TV and ESPN networks will carry the games.  Here is the Raptors schedule: (all times central)

Motivated Riley Mulvey eyes expanded role for Iowa

Iowa sophomore Riley Mulvey says he learned what it takes to compete in major college basketball. The native of New York reclassified to start his Iowa career early but played sparingly and appeared in only 17 games. He hopes to provided needed depth in the post next season.

Mulvey says last season was a valuable lesson for him.

Mulvey says the success of last season provides even more motivation.

Mulvey says it was a meeting with the coaches after the season that helped him focus on next season.

Head of John Deere Classic talks impact of LIV Series

The executive director of the John Deere Classic says this week’s LIV Series event will have no impact on the PGA Tournament in the Quad Cities. The Saudi financed LIV Series has signed up several big names and will will compete in the U-S for the first time this week in Portland.

Clair Peterson says the business model of PGA Tournaments is more impactful.

Peterson the John Deere Classic may actually get more attention this week because of the LIV Series event.

The first round of the John Deere Classic is Thursday.

Iowa Reportedly to Face Seton Hall in Gavitt Tip-Off

The Iowa Hawkeyes will travel to Seton Hall for the 2022 Gavitt Tip-Off Games, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.  The dates and times for the annual matchups of hoops teams from the Big Ten and Big East will be announced later.

The other games include:

  • Nebraska at St. John’s
  • Villanova at Michigan State
  • Indiana at Xavier
  • Marquette at Purdue
  • Butler at Penn State
  • Northwestern at Georgetown
  • DePaul at Minnesota

OL Lauck Commits to Hawkeyes

Four-star Indiana offensive lineman Trevor Lauck announced his verbal commitment to the Hawkeyes this past weekend.

Lauck reportedly also had received scholarship offers from Michigan State, Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue, Boston College, Duke, Rutgers, West Virginia and others.

Lauck visited the Hawkeyes last July, again during the ’21 season and in April. He becomes the 13th known verbal commitment.

The 6-6, 287 pound Lauck (6-6, 287) is ranked as a four-star prospect by Rivals and the No. 25 offensive tackle nationally in the 2023 Class and the No. 3 player overall in Indiana.

IHSAA Announces 3-A/4-A Sub-State Baseball Pairings

The sub-state baseball pairings for Class 3A and 4A teams were announced Tuesday by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.  Here are the local brackets:

CLASS 3-A

First Round games will be held on Friday, July 8.  Later rounds held on Monday, July 11 and Wednesday, July 13.

Sub-State 8:

  • Clarke at Lewis Central
  • Denison-Schleswig at Creston
  • Carroll at Harlan
  • Atlantic at Glenwood

Lewis Central & Harlan will host the Semi-finals.  Lewis Central will host the Finals.

CLASS 4-A

First round games will be held on Friday, July 8. Later rounds will be held on Monday, July 11 and Wednesday, July 13.

Sub-State 8:

  • Thomas Jefferson at Waukee Northwest
  • Abraham Lincoln at Valley
  • Norwalk at Des Moines Roosevelt
  • Valley/AL winner vs. Des Moines Roosevelt/Norwalk winner

The highest remaining seed will host the Sub-State final.
