CRESCO, Iowa (AP) — Workers at Featherlite Trailers’ plant in northeast Iowa will soon begin customizing their horse trailers to add living quarters, creating 50 new jobs in Cresco. Featherlite Operations Manager Scott Milburn tells the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier demand for the trailers with living quarters was strong enough that the company decided to add the work to its plant.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are investigating a shooting outside a Des Moines nightclub that killed one man and wounded three other people. The Polk County Sheriff’s office says deputies were called to the Evolution Nightclub around 1:45 a.m. Sunday because of a fight outside. As deputies arrived, they heard several gunshots. Deputies then found shooting victim 20-year-old Dashwan Smith.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A 17-year-old Des Moines man has been arrested as a suspect in Friday’s fatal shooting. Des Moines Police say the teen was arrested late Saturday on suspicion of first-degree murder. The 17-year-old will be charged in the shooting death of 28-year-old Jose Lopez, who was found dead north of downtown Des Moines around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson told CBS ‘Face the Nation’ Sunday that he’s facing an unprecedented level of scrutiny about the veracity of his life story. Carson has questioned whether the issues dogging him over his autobiography are important to the nation’s search for the next president. The retired neurosurgeon is likely to face similar questions during Tuesday’s presidential debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Rescue crews from Lewis and Griswold responded late Sunday morning to a report of a single-vehicle, personal injury accident, east of Lewis. The call about a maroon Chevy pickup in the ditch near 600th and Oxford Road, came in at around 11-a.m. One person, an adult male, was transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital, in Atlantic. Additional details were not available late Sunday afternoon.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reports a woman from Corning was arrested on a charge of Willful Injury early Sunday morning, following a reported fight. 30-year old Ronice Elizabeth Flowers was taken into custody at around 12:25-a.m. after authorities received a 9-1-1 call with regard to a fight involving a knife. The unidentified victim was transported to the hospital in Corning for treatment of knife cuts.

A Nebraska man suffered injuries to his hands during a motorcycle accident Saturday afternoon, in Pottawattamie County. The Iowa State Patrol says 32-year old Daniel J. Garvey, of Omaha, was transported by Council Bluffs Rescue to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, for treatment following the crash near Iowa Western Community College, at Highway 6 and College Road.

Officials say Garvey was west on Highway 6 at around 2:55-p.m., when his 2009 Buell motorcycle left the road. Garvey over-corrected and laid the cycle on its side. The machine came to rest on the road. Garvey picked his bike up and pushed it a short distance and left it upright on the traveled portion of the road before being helped to the ground by a witness and a volunteer fireman. The bike was later moved off the road, prior to authorities arriving on the scene.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa health specialists will be providing students with a third dose of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine free of charge in an effort to combat the spread of mumps on campus. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that the announcement of the free vaccine was made Friday.

Lisa James with the university’s clinical outreach says the university has ordered 3,000 doses of the vaccine and will being holding vaccination clinics next week for students under 25. James says between 100 and 110 cases of mumps have been confirmed on the campus this year. There are usually only 10 to 20 reported cases a year statewide.

The viral infection’s symptoms include swollen salivary glands, fever and muscle aches. It spreads easily in confined spaces.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City man granted a new trial on sex abuse charges has again been found guilty of the crime. The Sioux City Journal reports a Woodbury County jury found 43-year-old Julius Turner guilty on Friday of two counts of second-degree sexual abuse and one count of third-degree sexual abuse. A sentencing date has not been set.

Turner was granted a new trial in April after convincing an appeals court that his trial attorney was incompetent. He had been found guilty in 2011 of the same charges and sentenced to life in prison because he was a repeat offender. Court documents accuse Turner of sexually abusing three girls under 13 from 2008-2009. In 1992, he was convicted of third-degree sexual abuse and lascivious acts with a child.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a Bartlett man after determining he shot a Glenwood man in the face.  Deputies first received a call of shots fired at 2028 11th Street in Bartlett at 4:30am on October 31st but were unable to determine at that time if shots were fired and if anyone was injured.

The next day Fremont County Deputies were called to Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg for a male who had been admitted to the ER with possible gunshot wounds.  Deputies were able to determine that 24-year old Dyson Tobin of Glenwood had non-life threatening injuries to his face from a shotgun.

Tobin then explained that he was fired at several times by 40-year-old Tim McCollum of Bartlett while he was asked to move a vehicle from McCollum’s property.  A search warrant was then conducted on McCollum’s residence and firearms and ammunition were located.

McCollum was arrested on charges of Willfull Injury Causing Serious Injury, a Class C Felony; Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, a Class D Felony; Intimidation with a Weapon Causing Injury, a Class C Felony; and Going Armed with Intent, a Class D Felony.  He is being held at the Fremont County Jail on $30,000 cash only bond.

The investigation is ongoing.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Federal officials reviewing Iowa’s plans to switch its Medicaid services to private care say they have concerns about the state’s timetable for implementing the changes. Timothy Hill, deputy director of the Center for Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program Services, says in a letter dated Friday that officials for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have concerns that the transition could risk the quality of Medicaid access.

The letter is addressed to Mikki Stier, who oversees Medicaid services for the Iowa Department of Human Services. DHS spokeswoman Amy Lorentzen McCoy says the department is working closely with federal officials to demonstrate the state is ready for the changes.

Iowa’s $4.2 billion Medicaid program provides care to poor children, families and disabled people, as well as some low-income adults.
